How much damage is Halder doing at the OKH?

Post by Tarhunnas »

Up to now, I have never bothered to change the OKH commander. Should Halder be replaced as soon as possible, or is the OKH commander so far from the front he isn't doing any damage? Is it a waste to put someone better as head of the OKH?

With his admin rating, he's actually pretty solid in OKH. His low combat ratings aren't that big of a deal in that position, unless you have a lot of OKH combat unit attachments.

He's sort of like Shaposhnikov in this regard.

I doubt it's a good idea to swap him out for a Manstein or Guderian or whatever, because they can have more impact on the battlefield proper in an army or AG command.

I agree Flaviusx

To put it into its historical context,Halder was only replaced by Hitler when he voiced doubts about Operation Blue.
Hitlers reply to Halders misgivings was typical:

'We now need National Socialist ardour rather than professional ability to settle matters in the East.....obviously, I cannot expect this of you' He sacked Halder, and replaced him with Zeitzler.

This is a great example of how Hitlers personality came to dominate his Generals and how they thought and acted. Zeitzler was Halder's replacement, but even when he voiced doubts later in the campaign, they were ignored.

I think, Tarhunnas, that if he was sacked by Hitler, then he must have been doing something right [:D]
