Strategic Bombardment by the Soviets

In the picture you can see where I did a "bomb-city" on Riga with about 95 bombers and although I didn't loose any planes in the attack I only caused about 8% damage to the port ( it was 80% before bombing ). So I'm guessing right off the top of my head that Strategic Bombing is something that causes little damage unless and until you use a LOT of bombers in your attack and probably is better left to the later war years when you have better Strategic bombers and more of them. Anybody else have a relavent thought?

Here's a further example where I bombed Danzig and caused significant damage to the port with just 7 out of 79 losses to the bombers.

EDIT: This was a daylight raid. I should do one with bombers on night missions to see what difference it makes.

Okie dokie here's one where I bombed Warsaw's manpower at night and it caused very little damage and I still had 2 out of 36 for losses. This bombing at night looks like it might be what I should do in the early war years instead of daylight bombing. What do you guys think?

I'm thinking that maybe the Soviets should target the Axis Armaments industry because it's one of the more important industries and there's only 10 or so cities that matter to Armaments and not everything Armament-ish is off-map.

I think Fuel production is about 25% damaged now.

I'm finding attacks on HQ's that are on their own in a hex with airpower has a great tactic at the moment.

Yeah, that's the way to do it. I love it. Are you loosing a lot of bombers doing night raids? I suppose the losses would be a lot higher if they were daylight raids though. Lemme know how it's working for you.

You mean parking an HQ unit in the same hex as an airbase? I can see how the fighters at the base could protect the HQ unit and the HQ unit could support the airbase with it's organic AA assets. Good idea.

No, my opponent HQ's are my favourite targets with airstrikes. If it is on its own in a hex, I do a lot more damage to its attached SU. One raid destroyed 20 Stugs and killed von Schweppenburg.

I think my losses are about 10% bombing Polesti. I'm expecting that to go up though as he will transfer night fighters to protect it, but thats good for me as well as I used night bombing a lot on the HQ's and armor.

I play that cities can only be bombed once per turn as well as air fields after turn 1 - this mitigates much of the unrealistic effects of the current model.

I do that too I try to estimate where my enemy have a lot of SU units and bomb those HQ's if I am able to spot them while playing Soviets my best result so far is 400 killed and 30 artillery pieces destroyed by one bombing raid. I only losed couple planes so it was good.

I dont always get this lucky but bombing German HQ seem to be best targets for unit bombing missions.
