General Tactics and strategy suggestions?

Close Combat – Last Stand Arnhem is a highly enhanced new release of Close Combat, using the latest Close Combat engine with many additional improvements. Its design is based on the critically acclaimed Close Combat – A Bridge Too Far, originally developed by Atomic Games, as well as the more recent Close Combat: The Longest Day. This is the most ambitious and most improved of the new Close Combat releases, but along with all the enhancements it retains the same addicting tactical action found in the original titles! Close Combat – Last Stand Arnhem comes with expanded force pools, reserve & static battlegroups, a troop point buying system, ferry and assault crossings, destructible bridges, static forces and much more! Also included in this rebuild are 60+ battles, operations and campaigns including a new enhanced Grand Campaign!

General Tactics and strategy suggestions?

Post by wjg »

The last time I played this game, I think, was in 1998, on the original version from a boxed game I bought at Electronic Boutique (Gamestop bought them?).

What I remember is playing alot of the missions and just slugging it through. I think then the final mission, or the last mission for me was having to attack and capture a bridge with a 6 pound gun on the other end, I believe I had to use smoke, move fast and attack with grenades or somehow rushing it. On another attempt, I got a luck shot with a bazooka across the river.

But since then, I have been exposed to many modern sims, AA, Full Spectrum Warrior, Flashpoint, and other games where there is no acceptable loss. And in RTS games, which have made maneuver king, the fastest units usually always wins. It seems there is a built in bias unknown game developers that favor units of maneuver because they are afraid to degrade their firepower.

Starting the game up last night, I saw I was way off my mark from when I played it before, and I think I learned alot of bad habits since 1998. I think I was randomly moving my troops down a road because there was not much room elsewhere, but I wanted to keep my vivkers and mortar teams close by for support.

Are they any guides about how to use a riflesquad, when to employ the bren squad and other matters that are not obvious? And, for instance, how effective are scouting units? I'd like to use them, in every match, but I loose firepower for then, its not so much the firepower, but an entire unit. And when to engage a platoon HQ in combat, and when to use mortars because their ammo is terribly short.
