End of Allied impulse #2, May/Jun 1941

Well, I think it's time to bring Hungary into the war. [:)] Again, I prefer the Luftwaffe to these feeble aircraft of the lesser powers The Pilot can learn to fly them, oe else! These troops will probably sit around screening those for trapped Russians for a while.

Rumania got its land back in Bessarabia!!! (Notice that the border actually does change to reflect this)

And my attacks, in the North (on the left):

• 33:7 (4:1) Assault on Kaunas
• 20:5 (4:1) Assault on Vilna

In the South (on the right):

• 23:1 (Automatic) North of Lvov
• 47:11 (4:1) South of Lvov

I decided I might as well try to clear these units out. Dangerous, but why not?

Well, mostly successful, but I paid for my mistake in Vilna. I took the city, but it cost me a white print INF and a good MOT.

In the North: Finland started collecting that territory it forgot to grab last impulse. [>:]

I left the flags on so you could see what the 2nd Ski Division was doing.

In the Baltics, Latvia has joined Lithuania as liberated-nations-in-waiting. The Russian border is now just over the horizon. Vilna didn't work as planned, but it hopefully opens up that "Breathing Room" all my soldiers keep mumbling about. [;)]

And, in the South, the Panzers are ready to roll forward on Rundstedt's orders. Assuming I don't get blocked yet again. There's still an O-chit just waiting to be used . . . will it be used to break the river line? We shall see . . .[:D]

What do all lyou guys think about the russian deployment?

In Barbarossa he has to put 10 corps at or very close to the Rumanian border and 10 close to the German/Polish border. The Polish border is standard. The Rumanian isn't. There are a couple of units to far to the west. Well. He got punished for that...

Nothing new on the north front. USSR reorganize its forces on the central front. Or in other words runs away. Yeremenko reorganize 3 armies so they are combat ready.

On the south front the Armoured Army Group withdraws from the enemy contact.

May showers have come, and hard! We're looking at Storms in the Arctic, and Rain elsewhere.

On the Northern Front, the Finnish army has woken up, perhaps due to the thunderstorms crashing down on them. The Gd Infantry had to move back over into Finland so there would be enough troops in-country to let the III Motorized Corps cross the border on the penninsula to take the port in Hanko, before returning to Helsinki. This made me nervous, particularly because Mannerheim was forced to move out of position, too, so that the 2nd Ski Division could continue its work retaking the borderlands.

However, the only unit in or near Leningrad capable of causing trouble (before they can be moved back to the city gates) is the Russian 1st Engineers. They aren't likely to leave the city unescorted, I think. (I moved the Flyout out of its normal position so you could see it better, given the limited posting capacity).

Also in the north, I decided to take a few more risks, sending the XLIII Infantry Corps up toward Tallinn, and rolling on into Pskov with the VIII Mechanized Corps. This last move used up its supplies, leaving these troops vulnerable to counter-attack, but I don't think there is an enemy able to make that attack.

The Soviet Armor in the region could cause some trouble for me, given my decision to leave Minsk alone for now, hoping for better weather next impulse, but aggressive actions taken now could be costly for his Northern Front. Let's count on that, shall we?

And, in the South, where things should be starting to roll, the bad weather made this a logistical nightmare: I really would like to have made a stab at Odessa, but nobody could get close enough for even a risky 2:1 attack. Instead, I repositioned my troops to be able to respond, and ordered them all to pray for sun next impulse.

I'd like to see at least one more Fine impulse before the end of the May/June 1941 turn. I still have Rundstedt and Antonescu available to move this front forward (Rundstedt is behind the Rumanian MTN, and Antonescu is behind the FTR to the East of Cernauti).

In all, no attacks this impulse, though I did take Pskov, and managed to rebase a number of my fighters closer to the front lines to counter the Soviet buildup of bombers up North.

Another thing I have to start thinking about is Partisans!!! Since the weather has turned ugly, for these 2 impulses at least, the turn may not last too much longer. I'm going to have to be careful not to have too many more units disorganized in attacks over the rest of this turn. Here's where things stand at the end of the 5th impulse:

Good to see you again, bo! It's been a few days, at least.

Unfortunately, both of us have family obligations today, so we probably won't get a chance to continue this until tomorrow morning/afternoon. I can tell you it's a lot of fun -- not just playing against a real opponent, but creating this play-by-play, too. Orm is better at it than I am, but I'm getting the opportunity to learn because I'm on the offensive.

Thanks Orm and Red Prince for this AAR.

You have highlighted a concern of mine though with your Finns. When we have the whole board in front of us it is easy to see the whole front...meaning it is harder to forget to move the Finns in your example. Not to say it doesn't happen with the board but I think there will be a lot more missed moves with MWiF just looking at a screen. Oh well, I'll just hope my opponent misses more than me.[;)] Anyway, I'm sure it's something us boardgamers will get used to in time.

How are you two playing one another, swapping save files?
