Cannot download SRTM files from Matrix FTP

Post by sztartur2 »

Title says it all. It gives me a window to log in and anonymous login does not work. What to do?

You can download the DEM from here and put the zip in your folder

I don't know why it is not working. Maybe Rick or Erik can answer that.

The path might be wrong. Make sure they are being loaded into the correct DEMS folder.
The registry saves some of the path info.
An aborted install or problem might disrupt this.

There was no aborted install.

Check to see where MM is saving the file. Make sure the path is correct.

I haven't had any problems using this method and have successfully downloaded many DEMS for Map Maker.

1. acquire longitude and latitude for your desired location from Google Earth (much easier to use than the small Map Maker Google Earth window)

2. open Map Maker

3. click "Find Location", paste in your longitude and latitude, click OK (example: 47°29'54.26"N 19° 2'26.73"E = Budapest, Hungary)

4. zoom down Map Maker Google window so that your yellow 1km square just fits

5. click "Import Google Map Height Map", paste ftp://xftp.jrc.it/pub/srtmV4/tiff,zip into the small bottom window pane, click OK

6. when asked "What do you want to do with srtm_*****.zip?" click "Save" (file will be saved to your default user "Downloads" directory)

Note: Sometimes the download will stall. If this happens simply repeat the download process until it succeeds

7. Alt-Tab out of Map Maker and locate downloaded file, move it to your Panzer Command Ostfront "DEMS" directory

8. Alt-Tab back into Map Maker and once again click "Import Google Map Height Map" (this time the DEM data will load)

Note: If you want to use the junk2drive method I would suggest using this link http://srtm.csi.cgiar.org/SELECTION/inputCoord.asp as the starting point.

Hope this helps [:)]

P.S. Below is a "DEM" data based artwork piece I created for the National Training Center (NTC) while working on a Geographic Information System (GIS) project in Arizona (circa 1999). The DEM data provide all the topographical information and the foreground stone ruins where inserted much in the same way as Map Maker handles structure placement. Various paint programs where used to produce the lighting and texture effects.

The full DEM of the earth is some insane size and is hosted at other sites.

To save space, I think Erik only copied the subset of DEMs for far eastern europe / near western russia over onto the Matrix servers, so it is possible that you are requesting a DEM which is legal, but not on the Matrix ftp server.

As 7.62 pointed out, you can get the DEMs from other sites and import into MM, it just isn't automated in that case.

I think you did the same thing I did.....you used the address that was already in the address box which is the wrong one.Delete it and use ftp://xftp.jrc.it/pub/srtmV4/tiff,zip. Works fine for me
