In order to not have to fix everything that happened in the five days you were gone, you need to take about 3 weeks off, then there is a window in the middle where somebody else actually has to do the work.

Speaking of Papa Hemingway, I am off to float-fish his favorite creek, Silver Creek, which is a miraculous crystaline creek that springs out of hay fields. ....and coddles astoundingly big brown trout, many of which are smarter than Hemingway was. We will throw Tricos the size of a gnat with barbless hooks and 7x tippet that will break if you sneeze just to make it sporting.


In the PTO, meanwhile, there was bad weather over western oz so the air offensive had to be scrubbed for a day.

Silver Creek is legendary for its monster trout and the difficulty in catching them. Both are apt. We did a morning float timed for the morning bite (about 9 am). Sure enough about 9:30 the whole stream came alive with fish slurping bugs off the surface. We were armed with the perfect fly imitator and tippet so small you could barely tie anything on... and everyone was experienced (especially the fish). Even so, the 6 of us caught only 4 fish (I was lucky enough to catch two). None were the monster boys.

We went back for the evening hatch and the stream was dead unitl about 9:30 PM well afer the sun went down. Again we had the perfect imitator (which was different from the morning hatch) but I got only one fish on the line who proceded to leap out of the water, shake out his barbless hook and stick his tongue out at me. One of our group tied on a hopper and got several strikes from big fish. We all stood in the middle of the stream in freezing water above our waists sharing a headlamp and lighter to tie on new flies and then the bite stopped. Bah. No wonder the fish get so big.

There was a crazy guy there from Maine who stayed out till 10:30 at night in the wind throwing a "fly" designed to imitate a swimming mouse and landed a 24 inch Brown. One might think he was telling a fish story but he had a picture. It looked like a King Salmon/Northern Pike cross.


Let's see...there was something else...oh yes.

Oz: The raid on port Headland went in today...and went PERFECTLY...except that the B-17's from Geraldton with a cruising speed of 225mph and a range to target of 560 mi arrived BEFORE the P-38's from Marazutha (or whatever that town is called...let's just call it Marakesh). The P-38's have a crusing speed over 300mph and had 400 miles to target.

Hmmmm?

There were 78 Tojos in the air! Even so, the B-17's bore in and put a dent in the runway. Then the P-38's arrived and bested the Tojos with no losses. 57 of 58 P-38's From Marakesh arrived over Port Headland (quite impressive even if they did show up late).

The bomber package was 60 Forts (not bad either). Air losses were 4 Forts including operational losses and 10 Tojos.

JJ moved some fighter from Port Headland to Wyndham which they have clearly calculated to be out of P-38 range.

A CM was spotted leaving Port Headland. Anyone want to guess what that means?

I was wondering how in the Hell JJ managed to get 90% of their fighters in the air over Port Headland? Were they doing that every turn? It seems that would cause substantial airframe issues and pilot fatigue. They had virtually every aircraft in the air even in crappy weather. It is almost as if........

Oz: B-17 raids over Port Headland a bit disorganized today. Again the Forts came in ahead of the P-38's. Intel was wrong over PH. There were 68 Tojos in the air again today. The LYB's mean to die there. So be it.

Air losses over PH:

1 B-17 (operational)
6 Tojo
1 P-38 (operational)

The runway is only 17% damaged. Clearly, they have lots of Korean laborers there.

I moved 30 B-24's from Alice to Marakesh. They will also raid PH today. The remainder of the B-24's at Alice will hit Broome at extreme range. Broome has only 12 fighters and some bombers.

To make some noise elsewhere, some beaufighters swept over Madang (northern New Guinea) and B-17's from Suva hit Noumea. I dont think JJ is fooled.
