BIRD VERSUS PIKE (DaBigBabes). DivePac(J) vs vettim89(A).

This is to be a report of a PBEM campaign between me; the indomitable DivePac (The Emu/Kiwi Bird) commanding the Japanese empire, and formidable vettim89 (The Walleyed Pike) commanding the Allied Coalition. We are also both committed to fighting this campaign to the bitter-end (promise).

We are playing this campaign in the DaBigBabes version B scenario 28 mod. I would also like to thank JWE and his crew for their hard work on this excellent mod.

Our rules are limited, and reasonably standard. But we are both experienced and fair players, so there is little need of extensive rules.

- restricted units pay PPs to cross national boundaries.
- no strategic bombing within or from China till 1944.
- no non-base invasions.
- No 4E bombers on naval attack below 10,000 ft.
- I get 1 port attack turn 1.
- Allied player turn one can move Chinese ground units and TFs already at sea. Everything else is fixed.
- No night bombing with less than 50% moonlight.
- Fighters max altitude is the band with their second highest MAN rating.

Excellent results from the raid on Pearl Harbor, and are the best that I can recall having in all my games. I especially liked the fact that the 27x B5N2s from Zuikaku that missed the morning raid, made their strike in the afternoon phase. I will still launch another full air strike on Pearl Harbor tomorrow (8th Dec), as it was already planned, and I never completely trust the reports.

I also launched air raids on the Allied Airfields at Manila, Clark Field, and Iba on Luzon, plus Hong Kong, and Alor Star, Georgetown, Kota Bharu, and Kuantan in Malaya. All these raid were quite successfully, and achieved the desired results apart from the raid on Clark Field. The other group of Ki-21-IIa bombers, and the escort of Ki-43-Ic fighters did not take-off and join this raid. So I will have to give Clark Field a good working over tomorrow, and I hope Tim doesn’t disperse his aircraft at Clarke before then.

December 8th,

Pearl Harbor Raid.

The second air strike on Pearl Harbor didn’t take place today, as the Carriers of Kido Butai were unable to launch any air-strikes, because of the weather. Which was a damn shame as his airfields would still have been damaged, along with some of his fighters.

Also Zuikaku who was the duty carrier today, lost 3 of her air-search B5N2s to fighters, out to 2 hexes around Pearl Harbor today. So I now know he probably has a strong fighter force left, and will have more tomorrow.

So I have decided to try for another raid on Pearl Harbor, as I really don’t have much choice. I need Tim’s Battleships out of the war for a couple of years, and I also need to destroy as many of thoughts P-40s and PBYs as I can.

Luzon.

The combined JAAF/JNAF raid I launched on Clark Field today, proved somewhat underwhelming results to say the least. As you can see I launched an escort heavy raid, which had the express purpose of destroying enemy fighters. But with the net result of 1 downed P-40, a couple of casualties, and a few hits on the airfield is a bit depressing.

Pearl Harbor Raid.

Not a good day for DivePac Command in the Hawaiian Islands today, with most of Kido Butai’s naval and port air-strikes going in uncoordinated. With the net result of very heavy aircraft and crew losses to my carrier air-groups, for some more damage and shipping losses to the American forces. Anyway there was not alternative other than launching the second attack, and my air-groups can be rebuilt.

As you can see it was a very bad day for Kido Butai’s D3A1 Val air-groups, and they have been decimated. But the situation is not as bad as it seems, as the A6M2 Zero, and B5N2 Kate air-groups are mainly up to strength. So Kido Butai is still combat capable, and can launch a heavy anti-shipping strike. While the D3A1 Val air-groups can be bought up to maybe 60-80% strength with the spare airframes and crews available.

December 11,

Central Pacific.

Naval troops landed on, and took the Island of Tabiteuea in the Southern Gilbert’s today. I intend to build Tabiteuea up as a forward defensive hub, supporting forward bases on Baker and Nanumea Atolls. There is a chance that Tim may try and interfere with this landing, with maybe his heavy cruisers, or even carriers. So as soon as the unloading is complete, the landing, and supporting force will withdraw.

South Seas.

Naval infantry and naval aviation troops landed at Aitape on the East Coast of New Guinea today, and will secure the area tomorrow. I have planned to build up Aitape as a support and fall-back base for the main area hub base of Rabaul. There is a small support force (1 cruiser,2 destroyers) covering this landing, but it is unlikely that Tim will interfere here.

Peleliu Islands.

Tim had launched two B-17 Fortress raids launch at my two carrier forces in this area today. The first was on the Ryujo force which is returning to Babeldaob for replenishment, from raiding in the Celebes Sea. The second was on the light carrier Zuiho and two destroyers just arriving from the Home Islands for deployment in this area.

I see damaged planes, during airfield bombardment, and report of destroyed on ground, during base fall. That means this is one of the latest beta.

Is it already include land combat modification (that support squad have only 10% chance of being targeted)? If so, can you put results of larger land combats (also not won by any of sides) into report? I would like to see how it works "live".

A piece of advice:
If you use few air units for sweep same base, put them on different altitudes. You actually want them to NOT coordinate. That way enemy can win first battle, but with time less, and less fighters will be on CAP, and pilots will be more, and more fatigued. When your bombers come, most of the planes will be already on ground refueling/rearming.

Central Pacific.

In the morning phase today my Merchant Raider Aitoku Maru, which was patrolling a line between Jarvis Island, and Starbuck Island was discovered by American Carrier task forces. The Aitoku Maru was attacked by a morning air-strike from what appears to be two enemy carriers (F2A-3,and F4F-3A fighters), and was so badly damaged she sunk later in the day.

But the Raider’s Alf float-plane did manage to get a good sighting of two enemy task forces, heading northeast toward the Line Islands. So I will assume that these are the two American carrier task forces that were operating from Pearl Harbour. Also that these enemy task forces appear to be heading toward Pearl Harbour, or the US West Coast. But just in case I have thinned-out my shipping in the Tarawa/Tabiteuea area only to the ships that are still unloading.

I had JNAF medium bombers operating from Babeldaob, raid the American airbase at Cagayan this morning. This was in reaction to the numinous B-17 fortress raids that Tim has been launching from this base. Because Cagayan is outside the range of fighter escort from Babeldaob, I did take the chance that there could have been some fighter defence. But luckily there wasn’t, and the raid did prove to be very successful.

Luzon.

Mayhem and destruction at sea off the Vigan landings last night, as the American motor torpedo boats again strike, but this time they got passed the covering force. These attacks lead to the sinking of four of my ships, but luckily (because of my settings) the convoys continued to unload. For tonight I have thinned-out my shipping here to the vessels still unloading troops. But unfortunately they are the large high-value transports, fingers crossed for tonight.

After reconnoitring Wake Island since December the seventh, with G4M1 Betty aircraft from Roi-Namur, and seeing no sign of any aircraft based there. I launched a raid on the Island to neutralize the airfield, before my upcoming landing operation. So you can imagine my surprise when F4F-3 Wildcats tried to intercept my attacking G3M2 Nell's. But luckily it appears that the Wildcats were as surprised as I was, and all my aircraft managed to return to base.

Yes Tim's torpedo boat attacks have been very affective, after a slow start. So I think that maybe he gave them better squadron commanders after the early ineffectual strikes. I have also been wondering if he has a tender at Subic Bay (which is added to the DaBabes Map), which is allowing him to reload his torpedoes.

Where I am happy with the air-kill ratio, it could have been better, as most of my losses are from the second strike on Pearl Harbor.

The Situation map of the landing operations in the Southern Philippines.

Note; The Second landing Force off Jolo is carrying a JNAF air flotilla HQ, and some JNAF airfield and engineer units. This force is to land after the SNLF company has secured the Island, so that Tim thinks there is a just small SNLF force there. There are Search float-planes, torpedo bombers and fighters standing-by to transfer to Jolo as soon as the airfield is operational. Thus with a naval strike airfield operational on Jolo, the Southern communications with Luzon will be severed.

Kota Butai hit Wake Island with a fighter sweep and an airfield strike today, this is in support of the landing operation, which begins tonight. I only lost 1x A6M2 Zero over the target, which was shot down by a F4F-3 Wildcat. But Kota Butai had a ‘bad hair day’ when landing-on the returning Strikes, and had 6x aircraft damaged, some which were later written-off.

Luzon, and Formosa.

Tim launched a squadron of his infernal motor torpedo boats into the harbor at Takao last night, with what I am sad to say great success. I did have patrols out to guard against this sort of attack, but they were to the south and east of the port, The torpedo boats slipped easily past these patrols, and only lost 1x boat to the defending minefields. All my ships that took torpedos later sank, and the three convoys in the port scattered after the attack. Luckily these convoys were the third-lift to Luzon, and were carrying support units, but it is still going to take some time to sort-out.

I must admit that I did come heavy-handed, but I didn’t want a protracted ground operation here. December 14.

Eastern Pacific.

Tim has had some submarine-mines laid off Kwajalein overnight, but I had a local patrol out. These patrol boats detected, then have cleared some of the mines. But I will reroute some incoming convoys to Roi-Namur for a few days. I have also noticed that enemy submarine sightings around my Pacific bases has picked up in the last few days. So I will step-up the local ASW patrols on all my main bases in this area.

Southern Seas.

Have started regular long-range recon flights over Rabaul today from Truk, with a detachment of G4M1 Betty's transferred from Roi-Namur. When I am positive that there are no enemy fighters present, I will launch long-range, and unescorted bombing raids on the airfield and port at Rabaul. This is to soften-up the Australian base for an up-coming landing operation, which forces are now gathering at Truk for, and will go ahead when Dai Ichi Kido Butai (number 1 carrier force)arrives from Wake.

Mindanao and Celebes Sea.

In the morning Dai Ni Kido Butai (Number 2 carrier force) found two American troop transports in the Celebes Sea, then sunk one and damaged the other with an air-strike.

Two JNAF raids on Cagayan In the afternoon against the airfield and shipping in the harbor, found American P-40 fighters now protecting this base. The first raid was by G4M1 Betty’s operating from Babeldaob, which game in low, taking the enemy by surprise. But the second raid by carrier aircraft from the Dai Ni Kido Butai found the enemy fully alerted, and suffered heavy losses.

Burma.

I launched the first offensive fighter sweep against the enemy fighter defences over Rangoon today. This was conducted by JNAF A6M2 Zero fighters operating from Bangkok, and succeeded in downing three RAF and American fighters.

Celebes Sea.

My forward JNAF airfield on Jolo Island is now up and running, and B5N1 Kate torpedo armed bombers operating from there today sunk four of Tim’s xAXL’s. The purpose behind the establishment of this base on Jolo, is to cut communications with Luzon from the south. The upcoming landing operation to take Kuching (beginning in two days) on the Sarawak coast, will cut the other line of communication with Luzon from the West.

There was some ground action at San Fernando today, when the 48th division attacked and retreated an American blocking force there. The 48th division will now hold here, unit the 65th Brigade now landing at Vagan joins it. Meanwhile the 21st division has begun unloading at Aparri today, and will advance down the east coast of Luzon.
