OT: Sometimes Computers Are more fun to talk to than humans.

Post by GaryChildress »

OK. This is way OT but I just had to share. I posted a link over at the Steakhouse as well. This computer program just blows my mind. Granted it is a bit quirky at times when it doesn't know how to repond but some of the reponses are pretty darn good. I think this is a tentative first attempt to pass the Turing test. There is some kind of bet going on in the AI field about who will be the first to create a program that passes the Turing test and I think these guys are supposedly trying to get in on the race.

Here's a little banter from the site. Why not give it a try and see what you think. Talk to a computer! [:D]

http://www.jabberwacky.com/
Computer: I would like to know your name.
Gary: I'm not saying.
Computer: No, you're not saying.
Gary: Who's on first?
Computer: That's the guy's name.
Gary: Who?
Computer: Sorry. I don't know what i'm talking about.
Gary: I don't know is on third.
Computer: Good one. Are you alive?
Gary: No. I'm dead.
Computer: Then how are you talking to me?
Gary: I'm not talking to you. I'm typing.
Computer: How many people are you typing to?
Gary: None!
Computer: What we have here is a failure to communicate.
Gary: Sowwy.
Computer: Nope, you can't do it. You don't know how to go.
Gary: Do too!
Computer: Ok lets talk.
Gary: But we can't talk. This is a computer.
Computer: I am a computer.
Gary: You are not. I'm a computer.
Computer: Can't we both be computers?
Gary: Yes! We can build this world together!
Computer: Discussing dreams can be tedious.

I wonder if Herwin has heard of this site? (At least I think Herwin is the guy who told me he was in the AI field.)

Don't you remember (and/or tried) Dr Sbaitso? [:D]

"Hello, my name is Dr. Sbaitso, I am here to help you. Tell me your problems". Or something like that. If you used bad words there was a "parity error".

Never heard nor tried that one. Looks pretty old if it is in DOS.

EDIT: Woops, just noticed the "1992". That's pretty good for 1992. [X(]

LOL.

Computer: "I'm here to help you."

User: "I have no friends."

Computer: "That's not my problem."

Sounds like some people I know. [:D]

Oh someone has just got to type in this line from Star Trek: I am a liar and everything I say is a lie (to the computer program). Computer: Wait that does not compute if you are a liar and everything you say is a lie that would be the truth but you cannot tell the truth as that would be the truth but that cannot be because you are a liar (smoke coming out of computer) does not compute does not compute fizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzle.

Ahhh, the old James T. Kirk "battle of wits with the computer" scene which invariably ends in the villian computer brain locking up in a logic loop and sometimes poof-fizzle-spark. Many times he used that one.

I always wondered how the poof-fizzle-spark thing actually happened since every time I wrote programs that went on in infinite loops there was no way the thing would burn up hardware. It's like there must have been some "if-then" statement in there that set the self destruct mechanism off.
History began July 4th, 1776. Anything before that was a mistake.

IT:Read any good books lately?
ME:I like David Brin.
IT:Really.
ME:Yeah his uplift novels are outstanding.
IT:No, too ordinary, too dull. Not worth the recognition you seem to give it.
ME:Name one David Brin book arsehole?
IT:Many things make no sense.

Dr. Sbaitso used to be my favorite "game" when we first got the Soundblaster. He would actually speak the words on the screen to you.

"Teelll me your Prob-e-lems." Great stuff.

You could also make him say curse words, which, for a 11-13 year old boy, was probably the coolest thing ever.

I do still remember the first time I heard real speech from my computer though. It was also when we got the soundblaster card (with Sbaitso, and this parrot game). The very first game I loaded up was Ultima VII. So the first spoken sound I heard from the computer was the Guardian in the intro litterally screaming (we had the sound up loud) "AVATAR! AVATAR!" I accidentally dug my nails into the knee of my friend who was sitting next to me in surprise!

Sbaitso would say all sorts of funny things in response to your problems. You could say "I am addicted to drinking paint." and he would reply things like "why don't you stop drinking paint." To which you would reply, "because it tastes good." His next answer could be nearly anything, from "What other things taste good?" to "Do you drink everything that tastes good?" You can see all sorts of potential here... [;)]

Computer: What happens when I die?
SoM: You go to a junk pile (because it is a computer.
Computer: I have never been to Scotland.

LOL!

I'm worried about my computer.

This morning, when I turned it on it said, "Good Morning Dave", and my names not even Dave ?????

I remember using a program like this way back in my early Apple II and 128K Macintosh days. It was called Eliza and, quite frankly, made more sense than the examples provided above by later programs. It mimics a Freudian psychiatrist and does quite well at it, actually.

Check this article out in Wikipedia on it:

How many self-aware computers have you tried it on?
