CPU Help

Post by crocodile27 »

Hi Everybody. Recently I bought 2 games from Matrix, Harpoon Ultimate and TOAW. And sadly this latter has a bit disappointed me but perhaps it was my mistake since I got the feature of the Product wrong and didn't understand the dimension of the game. In the past I was a fan of the Tiller campaign series and enjoyed and still enjoy many hours with this game. i can control the units and it is smooth. While I found the dimension of TOAW overwhelming. I mean I started some scenarios and noticed that most have up to 300 Units in your side to control. I can't cope. They are way too many and after few press of the "n" button to advance to next unit I'm already exhausted. And what I can't find in this game is right the chance to give some control to the CPU for assistance. If I start to play a turn and after a while I set the CPU to control my side , it ends the turn but also cancel my planned attacks or some of the moves I executed. Then I noticed some button regarding the Computer Opponent, move formation or plan moves but in the manual they are only mentioned in the section regarding the Editor and couldn't understand much. In few words, the game is too overwhelming for me, too many units and therefore too long to play... Well Iguess I'll focus on Harpoon and Tiller CS again, but if you can give me some help of any kind or any tip I thank you big time!
Cheers, Max

There are smaller scenarios available. I would suggest going to the Rugged Defense site and grabbing 'Arnhem' or 'Remagen'. I'm sure others will follow with their suggestions.

The option for CPU assistance is in the game menu. Choose the option to 'Show PO Assist Buttons'. Then you can move what you want and let the PO (Programmed Opponent) move the rest by hitting the 'E' button. This is a fairly new feature so not all scenarios will be compatible, but with a little help they could be.

Don't give up, a lifetime of happiness is ahead of you! Stop in and ask Q's anytime, there are always plenty of helpful sorts here.

Thanks a lot for your reply mate. Yes i know there are small scenarios, but somehow I had the idea that most of them are quiet huge and that to really appreciate the game one must be able to cope with them and s far i didn't manage, but I'll try to hold on... I also knew about the PO button and I noticed that the CPU move the units. But does it always move them the same way, or sometimes adapt it and changes it?
And then I noticed that if I plan my attacks and then let the CPU take control my attacks are not really executed anymore.
Anyway thanks a lot for your help and as I said I'll try to hold on.... :)

But you should start with some smaller scale action in order to become familiar, then when you play the larger scenarios you won't have the double whammy of managing so many units while learning the system.
... the CPU move the units. But does it always move them the same way, or sometimes adapt it and changes it?

There is random code in the PO's actions, but overall its actions will be similar.
... I noticed that if I plan my attacks and then let the CPU take control my attacks are not really executed anymore.

I haven't actually used it very much in that capacity, but I wouldn't think it should cancel attacks that the player had planned. Some confirmation of that would be helpful.
