Searching for Bobby Fischer

Post by Admiral Scott »

I would like to know who were your toughest opponents playing PBEM.

Also, were they aggressive or conservative?

And, did they have a prefered side to play as?

Well, I'm still on my first PBEM game of UV with Toro, he as the Allies and I as the Japanese, in scenario 17.

So far, I've made a whole bunch of stupid strategic mistakes, but I've gotten lucky on the tactical side so far. Still too early to tell, as we're only in the middle of June, but I need to make a big move soon or else it will be too late. I have Lunga and have a good start on turning it into a big, Mother *bleeper* base, but it's still a work in progress. I haven't made any moves to PM or Gili-Gili yet....hehe, you hear that, Toro-san....I said "yet". ;)

I tried to take Luganville very early on, but failed miserably. I did take Efate at the same time, but that didn't last long, either. About the only good thing that has happened to me is that in trying to take those islands right away, he was forced to commit his CV's and I destroyed both the Hornet and the Lexington.

On the whole, I think Toro-san and I are evenly matched. I'm enjoying our game immensely, although I need to kick it into high gear before too long or suffer the consequences.

I start a new game of scenario 17 with Inigo Montoya this weekend, but this time I'll be playing the Allied side. Should be a lot of fun, can't wait!

Deerslayer. He's deliberate and not overly aggressive, which makes it hard to catch him unawares. It like playing against the tide: no matter what I do, he keeps coming.

(Bax, agree with you that we're fairly evenly matched... but time will tell, whaa-haa-haa :D ).

I'm also playing fdobbins, and he's relentless. Just when I think I have something under control, he hits me with something else. Learning a lot from him.

Well, my toughest opponent was Spooky, he showed me what a capable player can do with the Japs.

He was aggressive, but only when he needed to be without being careless(theres a very fine line there, very evident with pepole playing the Japs).

I play extremly defensively (thats why I play the USN mainly) and so doing managed to avoid losing any CV's , but even this was not enought as once he conquered what he needed to win he dug in well and made an exrtremly tought barrier for me to break down without HUGE lossses which did happen in the end.

I'm really looking forward to our game, Bax!

Toro, after I find out how much better Bax is, maybe we can start a game and I'll get a similar handicap from you. Bax is giving me 160% to start, which is very much appreciated.

To answer the thread though, it seems U2 and Mogami are well respected. Cap and Gown's tutorials make me think he knows what he's doing. And Pasternakski seems knowledgable.

:)

lol Inigo, it has not been proven exactly how good or bad I am yet, so don't think I'm an expert, by any stretch of the imagination. The only reason I felt that Toro and I were well-matched is by how I did in our first game together, where we both made some big mistakes. We've decided to start our game over, so now the real game begins!

Inigo, I may live to regret that 160% commitment, especially as I see how efficiently you've been taking my bases in the first few turns. Whatever happens, I know that I will enjoy both my games with you and Toro.

To me, one of the best things about a great game like this is being able to meet and exhange ideas with people who have similar interests as I do! :)

yeah yeah yeah. We play to make friends, etc. etc. Come on! We all want to win! You know you loved that I didn't even know to put my ships into convoys with escorts until you sank two of my unprotected transports. My poor guys had to defend themselves against shelling because I left them all alone. I am an idiot, but I'm learning!

The thing that makes me smile is my transports fired back and hit your subs with shells both times. :p
