The only way to do this is to play with the startup.ini file in the game folder; it should look like this

'Distant Worlds startup settings

'screenwidth 1024
'screenheight 768
'hyperdrivespeed 1.6

Adjust the screenwidth and screenheight to whatever you feel is a proper window.

Thanks for the info, but I do not see a Startup.ini file in the distant worlds folder.

Do I have to create it?

Thanks,

It should be there by default afaik. Not sure how your installation was made or on what OS (maybe it differs from my XP version) so if you have the file somewhere creating a new one would not help.
Try searching all the files in the game folder for the screenwidth or the screenheight strings, maybe you'll find it this way. If you can be sure you don't have it you can test with creating a new one.
