ToS WS - a game I played

Post by LarkinVB »

I just played with a friend of mine. Both in same team, hotseat.
We choose the AI 2 levels below (we are crack) with 25% weight advantage (you can set this with easy, no messing with binit.dat).

I'M very proud that the AI did considerably improve compared with v1.4. It does move with much better precison. It does lay smoke screens to obscure LOS. It does light woods in which we were hiding with intent. all in all it was a close fight.

That was NO premade map or mission. These are much harder as the designer can add some nasty things like terrain changes during battle, reinforcemants and other stuff.

I will stop working on the AI now as it is a threat. Still beatable but newbies will have a hard time if they put it at a decent skill
level.

BtW. The 3D map is getting nicer with every improvement Steffan is adding. The game grafics will be no match to Warcraft III or Age of Mythology but much nicer than 1.4.

Just a little. Its far from perfect as the decision making on how and when to place a smokescreen is one of the more complicated things. Its a nice addition and the AI did use it on the last battle to to protect its approach on our GM titan.

That's Friggin awesome!!!

When WS get's released ppl will play netgames not for the challenge, but to play someone they can beat. Ppl will argue over who gets to team up with the AI, instead of the best player accepting the handicap. (moderate as it is in even 1.4. The AI got real intelligent in that version)
I see your lips moving, but all I hear is: Blah Blah Blah, I'm a friggin moron.

Nice. Besides the fact that the guy who wrote it is an @$$ and doesn't know his facts. I'm not insulting or offending you, am I Megrez?

This year my magazine decided to publish a special X-mas rewiew.
It's a special article about the games which are expected to be out on sale in the next months of the new year; we suggest to people to pay attention to these games and to buy them when they will be on sale.
If you noticed many of my colleagues suggested games like MOO, or Unreal Tournment, etc. (which aren't on sale in Italy yet)
I decided to write the rewiew about ToS:WS, talking also about its freeware predecessor, and showing the original websites, translating in italian some material which is published on them.
Hope also it will drive some italian distribution companies to show interest about the game.
Inizio Partita (the magazine I work for) is supported by Excite Italia (the italian version of excite) and it's the 3rd most read online website about games in Italy... hope this will help the game to get some new fans (and buyers when it will be on sale).

It's basically a translation of the readme that comes with the game, and parts of the manual and the description in the Matrix site.
And then he finishes with:
"I'm refering to the intolerance (even with insults and offense) demonstrated by the programmers and some of the american beta testers regarding some of the proposals and suggestions to improve the game given by some of the players that were not american or german (some of the VB crew are german); a sort of informatic racism of low level... blah blah blah."
The guy doesn't know what he is talking about, he doesn't own an atlas, he talks of himself like he's talking for everyone. Like I said, he's an @$$.

Ok
As you said probably I'm a stupid.
But, apart me, there was some other players on this forum that wrote about ideas or possible improvements of ToS, and they was censored by YOU! By the way... maybe you don't know but when I wrote the post about the weapons I read all the old posts about weapons written by other players and I often noticed the same arrogance in your posts. So I understood that this situation lasts from long ago.
Below your name I can read:
Location: Portugal
I would like to express my doubts about your nationality... It's true that you're a programmer and that you surely have a good familiarity with english language, but your slang it's too much good... I think you're not portuguese, or, at least, that, if you're portuguese, you have been living abroad from many years.
I'm quite convinced that you're american; but I'm ready to make you my apologizes if you're not. Anyway I suppose that the point of friction (related to that criticism at the end of the article) is due to the fact that my sentence was mainly directed to you :) And you know that! If you think I'm a $@@ it's your problem! I have my ideas... and I write them... never said that the rewiew was extra-positive.
I was making a complete translation (as I promised) to publish it on this forum, but you did part of the job instead of me... forgettin' to quote the parts which don't interest you: for example I said also that the game is very good, and I invited our readers to buy it or to book it if they'll have this possibility in the future when it will be on sale. I also invited some italian distribution companies to distribute it here in Italy. And I said also other interesting things...
The bla bla bla.... But you preferred not report them.
To say the truth I usually make rewiews about RPG games 3D-style.... your game is based on a good idea, but I think you know by yourself its limits... when I said that InizioPartita is an important italian online magazine about games I was true: I think that a rewiew about ToS:WS, placed near to other rewiews about other famous games (for example the new release of MOO), is more important for this game than your "squirmings" are (to use your own words).
Maybe you feel strong here and you like to say that I'm a @$£ :)
OK... but outside the situation is different...

I, for one, will be interested to read the (translated as my Italian...well, the only word of Italian I know I can't spell and mispronounce..) review, good or bad.

They say any publicity is good publicity after all.

On the other hand though, if Thorg's translation is accurate I must speak up in Larkin's defense (as he's the most prolific developer posting here) as he is almost uniformly polite and most courteous, even when he's telling WhiteFireFox to cram it ;).

As for everyone else, flaming is an overly annoying part of any BBoard now it seems. Goodness knows why. Heck, I've probably started some more now. Which may or may not prove my point.

Anyhow, I've gotten properly side-tracked.

Meg: Please post your translation.

Lobsteve.

I'm a bit disappointed that I'm accused in this article to be offensive or intolerant. I can't remember this, really. I may reject
proposals but I have my reasons which are not releated to the person but the content of the ideas which don't fit to the game IMHO.

As I'm the only coder posting here on a semi regular basis I will take the blame but I can live with it. Sorry if you feel this way, Megrez.

You didn't really hurt me but it seems that I don't appreciate your review either. Its a free world nevertheless.

I didn't say stupid, I said @$$, like in A S S . And you know why? Read Larkin's reply. That was what fueled my post. I don't remember Larkin ever being what you claim. Lobsteve doesn't either. Anyone else?
You're mistaken about my position, I have no censoring capability. I merely reply to posts with my own thoughts. I have a deep knowledge of the game, I had a lot of available time, so I answered most posts. Other players? Sure, but none of them insisted relentlessly even when they had been thoroughly explained why it wouldn't work or why it needed refinement. You're not included in here. Arrogance? You're sooo mistaken.
About my nacionality, express what you want. I *am* PT. Else how do explain me being able to translate italian? ;) And why would I lie about that, and especially using such a small country as PT?! Would you like my full postal address? And no, I never lived abroad, except for one month in France years ago and some vacation time here and there.
Was your sentence mainly directed to me? Woah, who'd say? Of course I knew that! I'm the *only* official beta tester
:D
Yes, you can write what you want, but by describing the forum the way you did (and untruthfully at that), you're affecting the game. You have deliberately flamed the developers, all because you are pissed at one person... me. You used a magazine and the game to express your anger, and that's the 2nd thing that makes you an @$$.
And I didn't forget to quote the parts that were good, I said in my first reply that it was nice (before anyone asked for a translation) - oh, did you forget about that? I translated the bad parts because I wanted to provide solid evidence that I wasn't just flaming you because it was you - you might just mistake that for a grudge against you. I was counting on your translation of the rest.
The squirming part, you mean that part where you say that italian distributors are highly unlikely to (as in they won't) pick the game up, and you'll have to rely on spanish distributors, or something like that? I'm sure your review will be *very* useful. As if. And if that wasn't enough, the bad parts of your review will surely do the rest. Did it make you feel good, thinking you were helping? Hope so. And you talk about arrogance...

BTW, just stumbled across this thread named 'various', from 14 June 2002. Just thought you'd like to read it Megrez, and wonder what's wrong with this picture. Was it really me who triggered the animosity? Was I arrogant then? You didn't seem to think so.

Better yet, check 'Sorry for the delay...' , a few days later. Pages 5 and 4 respectively. Actually it was firestorm who first refuted your ideas. And there were *3* people telling you they didn't work, or did you forget mutt2050?
Selective memory...
But I'm not getting dragged into that again.

I vote for more battle reports!!

Arguments are boring. Even when Iceman's right. Which is most of the time (damme him to Hetzer's mantle).

Good news. I've finally got cable working, so I'll be available for some netgames. Time to dust off ICQ :)
OTOH, it's also time to get my head ripped off another half-dozen times by the old bas... uh, our good old friend Hetzer :)
