What do you exactly mean by "light"? On the topic of "best" artillery units, I tend to split evenly between tube ( RVGK and Army Artillery Regiments) and rocket artillery regiments. I always go for Regiment-sized units, when available, since you get thrice the strength of a battalion for the same cost in AP's.

The other SU's I bother building, in this order are AT Regiments, Sapper Regiments and Tank Bns. Finally there are the "specialist" stuff, such as BM Howitzer and Heavy Mortar that I use to bust fortifications.

I probably should have been clearer when I said light SU units. The one I was referring to, display an assault gun logo when created. Where is the best place to put them and with what units?

You're talking about on-map brigades? I don't build them, they take up space on the map. You need to stack 3 corps per hex to really bust those heavy axis forts. Don't make brigades for 5 AP each when you can make regiments for 1 AP and assign them directly to rifle corps when you need to. If you have surplus SUs in the pool then make more SU regiments.

The only exceptions to this are in the 1943 campaign where I keep (don't build more) of the motorised engineers, they are quite useful for busting forts around Leningrad and south of Ilmen, once you've busted the fort though the engineers can go back to the rear areas for refit and you push forwards with the corps.

I disband any AT brigades I'm given and put the armaments strength into AT regiments instead.

Artillery divisions? Hell yes, they can fire from 2 hexes away and the result is a big pile of dead Germans. Rocket artillery has much the same effect.

Ok, now I got what were you referring to as "SU X" :)

SU-57 factories come online for a couple months in September (?) 1941 and produce a quite "homeopathic" quantity of vehicles, a couple hundred. Besides the scant numbers, and lack of replacements, the only support units featuring them in their TOE in 1941 are TD Batteries, with just 4 of them. I've built a few of them - wasting those AP's probably - just to check them out. Another bad thing about TD batteries is that their TOE doesn't upgrade to something more useful later in 1942 or 1943.

So I think the most reasonable thing to do is to let them sit in a magazine until you get units packing more strength later in the war.

About later war models: I don't know.
