Germany last stand defence 44-45

Post by Jakerson »

I was thinking disbanding all corps level HQ's to release more manpower to reinforce low TOE divisions and also build up destroyed divisions back to front faster. If all corps level HQ’s are dispended it release hundreds of thousands men and thousands of vehicles.

I do not think that Germany need tactical flexibility of corps HQ’s anymore at 44-45 as there is no more offensive anymore other than very local and limited counter-attacks. I think that it is more beneficial for Germany to release this untapped manpower reserve tied up in corps HQ’s.

I also plan to attach whatever extra SU’s there are directly to divisions to boosts most battered parts of the line. It is no sense to have too many SU’s inside army HQ’s as only limited number of them can take part of combat. I think a troop with a lot of divisional level SU’s commanded with armies helps Germany to hold out longer than keeping corps HQ’s.

I haven’t tested this defense strategy but I think it might buy few extra turns. I do not expect miracles at this point but I am looking any way at all to hold even one turn longer.

What ill effects there are if Germany goes for pure army level command system?

This is very interesting. What you propose for the Germans is to mimic the organization of the Red Army post-Barbarossa. Have you tested this against a human? Would you interested in testing it? I would gladly help you by taking command of the Red Army [:)]

Thanks for offer but I currently play two 1944 campaings one as German and one as Soviet. I dont have time for more campains.

I havent tested this strategy yet but I beleve that dispanding corps level HQ's will give more benefits than what penalties there are for German player. Reason is that it release couple dozen divisions worth of menpower and in late years Germany struggle to bring division full TOE. There is permament shortage of menpower.

If you can bring even 10 more full TOE divisions to defend could have huge impact on outcome.

41-42 Germany need their corps HQ just to maintain full tactical flexibility and all bonuses but in late year 43-45 I am not sure if it is good to keep corps HQ's especially if there is a lot of destroyed or 30-50% TOE divisions and plenty of armament points in pool. Germany could really use this temporary reinforcement boosts.

I would be very cautious. I have found that the only way to sting the Russians in the late game is with Reserve units. Intervention of a single Reserve Panzer division can turn a normal push-back into a posible hold with, at worst, a bad exchange rate for the Russians. Intervention of two Reserve divisions is usually enough to turn it into a hold and a bloodbath. In order to intervene, the Reserve unit must pass a leader initiative check; the more links in the command chain with good leaders, the better the chance of intervention

Fair enough. I might be starting a hotseat game to give it a spin.

If you get any results please post them in thread.

If you play hotseat save game and play some turns without this tactic then load save and play same game with this tactics so we can get compare how much it impact.

I would do it myself but currently I have no time for it so I have to test it in my campaing game if I want to. I got idea from this tactic when I started to play 1944 campaing with German side and I wanted to seek ways to hold out longer during last stand defence in final years.

The downside being that even hold losses are totally unsustainable for the Heer and can actually lead to far greater losses on that turn than a retreat on the initial combat and so holding can just speed up the attritional process.

Holding on for 1.5 to give the 44 campaign another go.
