Benefits of knocking Finland out

Post by traemyn »

In my GC as the Soviets, I currently don't see a reason to redirect troops to fighting Finland but maybe I am missing something.

What are the benefits of spending resources to knock back Finland past the No Attack line, and/or make them surrender? Do they provide additional resources (supply, AP's, etc) to the Axis or something?

It's really not necessary.

Don't bother worrying about knocking out Finland from the war until you can do so cheaply -- that is to say, when you can grab Pskov, Narva, and Vyborg in the late war period. That will force a surrender. If you've lost Leningrad, that means retaking that first and ignoring the Finns.

Some players like to blood their formations on the Finnish front if a stalemate ensues. My own view is that this is about the worst terrain on the map to do anything on and is a place you should strip to the bone. I've seen at least one AAR where the Germans took advantage of a Soviet offensive up here in 1942 by returning the favor in the south and bagging quite a few units. It's the south that matters and that's where the war is decided. The north is a sideshow. Once the issue is decided down there, then things can develop elsewhere.

I'm also doubting that the pre 1.05 1942 stalemates are going to occur with the new beta.

You remove points for the Axis by doing so, but as you need to capture Berlin anyway and will thus be in Germany proper by the end of the campaign, the points the Axis keep by keeping the Finns in the war can also be removed by the Soviets by capturing a few more German/Austrian cities.

Well Finns run out of replacements if they are consistently hammered and then they collapse as troops cannot rebuild. It is more easier to collapse Finns if German have taken Leningrad and finns have advanced over the no attack like and their morale start to drop.

Hammering Finns have its benefits especially if German player use Finns to guard large partition of Northern front.

If Finns stay inside no attack line it is too costly and slow hammer them as morale stay high they fight like beasts.

Killing Finns give extra points for Soviet as there is point giving Vyborg there (not much but If you want every point).
