RE: Fighting
Thx String. I agree with you. Luckly my 4 BBs are all modern ones...
However what do you think about the "air threat"...i mean...this could easily be a bluff...his air units can be in this scenario a more deadly opponent than his mighty naval forces...
What about going for the "minor possible risk"...with something like 2 SCTFs composed of 1 CA and 1 CL (both with torps) leading 6 Fletchers and nothing more (for a total of 12 DDs) ?
As i see it, under this scenario, i risk to lose only assets that are not "unvaluable" and i still can cause enough damage to make him pay hard for his daring....his BBs will be exposed to my torpedoes and i can still collect a total of 20 PTs at Tulagi.... at the same time if he comes with the KB these ships are fast enough to be able to avoid most of his attacks...even if i know that i'll be on the losing side.

RE: Fighting
mang, why fight that SCTF at all? it's out to bring you hurt. but also it's out to provide cover for a major attempt to dunkirk his stuff out from Tulagi. suck him into a Cannae. i'm hungry for a fight!
1) don't try to counter it w/ your BBs, he'd like a surf engagement, you won't. throw multiple 6-PT & 2-DD TFs in his way, just to slow him down. the more, the merrier. make him expend his speed & ammo. give him a scare w/ multiple surf-combat screens showing up in every hex he enters.
2) you're using 2-day turns, right? can you task 4+ light SCTFs (CL+DD, or DD only) w/ waypoint1 NE & NW of his route, & waypoint2 on his line of withdrawal? give these guys some LRCAP cover. set them for fullspeed. you want to intercept the loaded returning transports from multiple directions.
3) your target ain't these 5 BBs, it's the trans-capable ships in its train. savvy CLTF & DDTF commanders should withdraw from combat against BBs, but will attack transport TFs (one hopes).
4) maximize your air vs. nav, but restrict their range so they're close over Tulagi. assign some LRCAP over your advanced TFs. he'll be maxing his CAP to protect his SCTF and tranTFs, put heavy, layered CAP over Tulagi.
5) org your own BBTF to sortie into his search-space, but away from his SCTF reaction range. next orders phase, return your BBs to home, but use the CAs & DDs judiciously to hunt down cripples from the previous actions.
<edit> just read what String had to say, wrt your available surf forces. my post above assumed you had fewer CAs & more DDs available. but especially w/ KB lurking nearby, i think my suggested tactic is still valid - don't throw your SCTFs (CA+DD) for a fight at Tulagi, try to get them astride his withdrawal path, using full-speed and waypoints for a 2-stage 'scatter outwards then coalesce inwards' maneuver. stage some add'l TFs of whatever's available to charge around - confuse his search picture, mebbe soak up some air-raids.

Thanks Mate!
Here's the general Idea following your suggestions...
What do you think?
Still have to decide what to do with my air assets...
Work in progress

RE: Fighting
Ok, the plan is done.
Orders have been given.
Differently from the picture above, i've added another TF composed of 1 CL (Omaha Class) and 6 Mahans DDs which will move north of Auki, trying to cut the enemy route, and then it will fall back to Tulagi.
Some of the TFs will get back to Ndeni after combats. Others to Lunga and a couple of DD TFs will move back to Tulagi.
2 More 4 DDs TFs will move south and will reinforce the "western jaw" of the overall plan.
230 fighters have been based at Tulagi, while at Lunga 300 fighters, 100 SDBs and 80 Avengers. Range 1 for them.
20 PTs will sweep Tulagi, while 20 subs will move at flank speed towards the theatre, positioning at Tulagi, Thousands Ships Bay and on the potential arriving and retreating routes of enemy TFs.
This plan should enable me to risk only minor assets (planes and DDs basically) but at the same time should be able to give enough headhaces to him.
I'm using only 4 major ships (CA Australia, CA Hawkins, CL Richmond and another Omaha class CL) so the losses would however be acceptable, even in the worst case.
If the KB comes in...it may will find a CAP composed of some of my TOP pacific squadrons.
Mines and PTs should be able to inflict some damages too...
Finger crossed guys

Why range one for your SDBs and Avengers?
I think that the two obligations you have are to be good at what you do and then to pass on your knowledge to a younger person

I guess he doesn't want them to fly into a cap-trap over enemy bases

RE: Fighting
Precisely String!
Dan our fighters and bombers at Lunga all have a range of 1, while our fighters at Tulagi have range 0. This should enable me to attack "ONLY" those enemy ships that will linger at Tulagi (or Tassa for what it matters) after the first night of fightings and my idea is to send enough "meat" on the first night in order to make his ships expend all their operational points so that they won't be able to move untill the next day...
Let's see....few hours and we'll know if i screwed all up or if our strategy has worked

Because he has 1100 fighters between Russell, Thousands and Auki bases...these forces will torn apart every single air mission i'll send against his shippings....differently if they have to LRCAP over Tulagi...at least in this way i'd save most of my shot down pilots
SPOILERs
Ok...still don't have the turn but i asked Rader to give me some spoilers...
The outcome isn't good for the allies...a Japanese victory cause he managed to bring away 25k of the 50k men that were present at Tulagi...a great masterpiece imho.
As far as i can tell from his email, my planes got butchered and my DDs didn't achieve their goal (so to say didn't intercept the fast transport fleet...)...
Well...here's his email:
"Yes it was, a lot of action indeed. But no major ships sunk on either side. Lots of DDs lost, probably more Japanese (maybe 8), but at least 5-6 US I think. Plus some Es, SCs, LBs, etc. A few hundred a/c lost, a few more Japanese than US (but many of those on the ground). But I managed to get more than half the Tulagi force out."
I'd call it a japanese strategic victory and and probably a tactical draw (or a minor jap victory)...it will depends on how many elite pilots i have lost...
I feel guilty...probably i should have dared more...but it's easy to say that when you know the result...

Only God knows how could he manage to load 25k men in 2 days from a beachhead...[&o]
i still have many many things to learn from Rader...i bet my first landings will be a compilation of nightmares....

RE: SPOILERs
rader's blowing smoke up your rear end. This entire campaign in the Solomons has been a decisive victory for the Allies and a colossal defeat for Japan. Now, operationally, he manages to extract a fair bit of his troops. Okay, you can't always stop the tide from coming in or going out. You gave it alot of thought and tried something that didn't work as well as you wished. Bottom Line: You should come away from this feeling very good about your performance and the position of the Allies. Rader just has to blow smoke to cover how really feels about his performance in the Solomons. Strategic Japanese victory? Ha ha ha ha ha ha!

But i am happy about the Solomons campaign. As i told him i think the "tulagi affair" was a God's present left in front of my door cause it gave me the right place to start attriting him....however i think it's normal that i wished something more...i wished to lock the exit door so tight that it would have been impossible for him to save those guys.
Anyway i wanna see the reply to understand how it really went...
Now it will be much harder anyway without the advantage of having Rader focused on saving those divisions...
and CR..... Thanks for your constant support! :-*
RE: SPOILERs
Quite frankly, if you have sunk 8 DDs and a lot of other smaller ships then you have done just fine. If he got half his troops off then the other half is stuck there-including most of his heavy weapons as it looks like a massive fast transport pick up. Those units pulled off can replace heavy weapons stuck on Tulagi. Any time he gives you an attrition battle then you are winning. If he loses another 8 DDs to get the rest of then the loss of that many DDs plus the others you have killed represent a serious disaster for him. Cruisers and DDs are the lifeblood of the Japanese fleet.
I am anxious to see the combat report.

Just back to the game I left some months ago. I see you are doing just fine. I am in agreement you have upside. Dont get greedy though and stay concentrated to a resonable degree.

I think Churchill said that the British couldnt afford another victory like Dunkirk, Rader is smoking good stuff if he thinks he has won this campaign.

Wow .. the loss of DD's when the USN is ramping up the submarine force and the effectiveness of that force .. that does not sound like a very good combination

RE: SPOILERs
He is losing DDs while the Fletchers are starting to come out in large numbers. He may win against your older DDs, but as some of your Cleveland CLs and Fletcher DD TFs are showing, he is headed to defeat in a short amount of time at this pace.

RE: SPOILERs
Too tired to comment...tomorrow lots of screenshots are coming and an aftermath...
For the moment...here u go the Combat Replay (i know it's boring but better than nothing)
However i lost 8 DD plus another 6 badly damaged that will need a good time at shipyard...And a CL!...a CA is also reported damaged in a collision...My major ships are fine...some minor damages....mines weren't a factor...nor the PTs...or the subs (my subs had a very bad day...)...
He lost something like 10 DDs plus a good number left firing....
96 vs 40 for him in A2A...bad day for my bombers...but only 15 fighters pilots are killed[&o]
Overall a decent day....30k japs left at Tulagi...i won't let these bastards out!
I'll go on anyway. Tomorrow a general attack is ordered against his line. Russell Is. will be naval bombed while my 4Es will attack Auki preceded by 50 fighters on sweep. 200 Naval bombers will look for his BBs and my subs are encircling his BBs at Thousands...if he tries to get out they should find him (hopefully).

BANZAI!!!!

RE: SPOILERs
You really slaughtered a lot of small ships. PBs, Es, LBs, SCs, AKLs and so on. Combined with the loss of his DDs and one CL I would have to give this one to you. It is a shame that so many troops got away but in the end, you kill the Japanese Navy and those troops are not going to move around much more. Good turn.
