Radar detected something at 9000 yards.... Both taskforces steaming full ahead (60 knots closing rate) with all delays involved in turning the taskforce with 3 or 4 other major taskforces nearby in the pitch dark... I don't think it is that weird a result... 3 small DDs have one thing a very large force doesn't have... mobility

Cannon I missed the line that said contact was at 9k. I agree the results are in line of what could happen when DD's get inside a TF circle in the dark. Thank goodness the game does not have friendly fire [X(]

Yep, a good die roll on the surface engagement.  Not necessarily 100%, but definitely in the 90's.  So a possible result.

The Nettie attack is more like in the 80's.  +40 Hellcats on CAP for 2CV is about right, so the CAP looks fine.  Don't know what your ingress/egress altitude was, but looks like the CAP was up at 30,000.  A low level attack would have a good chance to succeed, as it did, with the CAP like that.  Likely the WASP had the low CAP and he forgot to reset his CAP altitudes.  That's where your luck came into play ... if you had gotten the SARA and the WASP had their CAP at 10,000 then your Netties would have been decimated.

Since the raid was detected at 80 NM I don't believe that is true. And my Betty force didnt get decimated because I had slightly superior number (with a good deal of elite pilotes) on escort duty... I lost more then half of my escorting fighters and still 6 or 7 bombers to fighters...

There were 3 CV in the area (probably the Hornet, for sure the Lexington and Saratoga) but he had multiple strikes out vs my DD force and vs one of my bases in the vicinity. I think he had around 40-50% of his fighters set to CAP.

The game does have friendly fire. I have seen it before though I don't have a screen shot handy. Probably not enough to make it historic but I swear I have seen combat reports which state that friendly ship A is engaging friendly ship B. I wonder what it looks like during the combat replay? Can you imagine the rage if one of your ships was actually sunk by a friendly?

The other case I often wonder about is friendly aircraft attacking friendly subs. I think this must have been quite a danger for submariners.

Gotta love it when things work out. Though I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that engagement...ouch! [X(]

I'll trade 1 DD for a CV all day long. [:)]

By rights, you should have had your 3 DDs rubbed out with little to no damage to the US ships.

Japanese are still very decent nightfighters.

The taskforce commander was a good DD captain. Nothing really special. You can only do this in low lighting conditions though. At long range they would have been torn up.

The key is to have ships in a dedicated Surface TF. Ships escorting (carriers or freighters) fight at a serious disadvantage.

I know there is nothing that can be done as far as the game engine goes, but its late 43, and the US has learned how to use its radar. Do you really think they would have gotten that close with out at least one DD going to have a look?

Just the way it is. Of course it happened all the time in the real deal... And, even if you have a surface TF protecting the carriers there is no guarantee that it will engage first. I should not complain, I got a couple of Japanese carriers early in my game this way. Purely an accident.
