While not rejecting the underlying sentiment, there is no fixed entry hex from Panama (and most(all?) of other off-map bases). It depends on your destination. So you can enter on any hex along a wide area if you want to bother.ORIGINAL: Canoerebel
An IJ DD at the Panama Canal Zone portal entrance? Man, that stinks to me. He's taking advantage of the fact that he can calculate the exact hex of entry, knowing that you (as a relatively new player) won't expect this. To me it's akin to the land march across the Owen Stanleys to recpature Port Moresby. Okay, the game allows it, but it stinks to do it, especially against a newcomer.

erstad is quite correct. TFs enter the map from any off map base at the same latitude as the on map destination base.

RE: The Stone and the Waves
Which begs the question how did the DD find the APA? Could've been luck, could've been a Glen. Could've been something worse than a Glen. Did you have a DL on that APA the turn of or before the DD attack?
Note for the record the fine Texas education system which teaches her students that "could've" is a contraction of "could have" rather than the beastly phonetic "could of" one sees on this here Internet thingy. [;)]

RE: The Stone and the Waves
As a vast percentage of shipping out of the Canal Zone is headed to Pearl it would be a good bet to sit opposite the channel on the map.
Worth a DD, just didn't pay off enough. (Imagine the cry if a CV was taken out!)

So Sep 10, 11 1943
Rader moved his KB 1 hex east of Shortland by the night of 10th... at the same time, as we sniffed, he moved his fighter force on Russell, Thousands and Auki, along with Munda and Rekata. His LB Torpedo Bombers were positioned at Shortland and Torokina...nearly 1200 LBA plus the KB in the area....not bad.
Lucky our 6th sense paid off and the bombardment of Russell closed the AF there, while 4 DDs bombed Auki and damaged the strip enough to stop his fighters from operating for the daylight of the 10th.
My BBs moved back to Tulagi, where a strong CAP was ordered.
Our Cats and Beauforts from Tassafaronga tried to interdict enemy BBs at Shortland...but with no luck, despite the clear moonlight (probably also due to the weather which wasn't excellent).
However when the sun rose, the KB was behind a kind of a hurricane and never lunched, while his torpedo bombers, escorted by hordes of fighters, for 2 days in a row attacked my BBs at Tulagi....the battles were fierce and, strange to be said, only the smallest raid managed to get through my CRACK-CAP Umbrella...resulting in a Nell putting a fish into BB Massachusset...7 flt damage...not bad...few days at the drydock...24 knots and she can easily limp back...
We downed something like 250 enemy planes, losing 25 during these fights...
Then my 4Es arrived in masse to Russell, to finish what wasn't done by the BBs the previous nights...another success cause he had no CAP there (all his fighters were set on escort duties).
Then a CVTF of mine which was moving from SF to PH intercepted and sunk with 4 1000lb bombs the bloody bastard DD that sunk the APA yesterday near Panama...
At the same time in India he sent 300 fighters to sweep my advancing Eastern Army, finding no opposition, followed by 100 Helens escorted by 80 Tojos to bomb it from 32k feet...this time i have the american 90mm AA guns and we can shoot back even if with not much result...but his bombings are absolutely not a factor from that height...we're still advancing...and i'm not LRCAPping...will rely on the AA for the moment, while 400 fighters will guard Karachi against any attempt of destroying our supply depots (like he did last time we tried to advance towards Multan).

RE: The Stone and the Waves
Sep 12, 13 1943
Cribtop...here's the answer to your question.... a damned CVE is operating in the area [X(].... Think it's the Hosho...today japanese Kates attacked with bombs[&:] another APA 13 hexes east of Christmas...the APA was escorted by an SC...not enough [:o]...the precious ship sunk after eating several 250kg bombs....
Made a mistake today....forgot to set the correct range for a Spit and a P-40Ks squadron...result is that our 4Es got escorted over Russell and we found a damned heavy CAP there...lost 25 fighters and 20 Liberators for only 40 enemy torched on the ground and 20 in the air...
Rader moved back his KB and BBs at Rabaul...while our BBs bombed Auki on their way back to Ndeni...
Our PTs were sent out towards Thousands and Russell and managed to sink a couple of PBs that were meant to resupply Thousands... lost only 2 PTs...not bad
Again hordes of fighters swept our Eastern Army, followed by his bombers...again no sensible result for him[:)]

16 B5Ns? Thats the Hosho, it carries only 6 torpedoes and 20 aircraft(some were doing search) or 18 aircraft after first upgrade.

I'll chase down the bastard!...unfortunately she's pretty far away from my CVs...but maybe i can manage to set a trap for her...let's see...
I think this moved along with an AO and the DD we just sunk...moved north of Midway, then on the black-hole between PH and SF, along the map border and now springs up east of Christmas...
RE: The Stone and the Waves
The good thing is if it's the Hosho, which seems very possible, she is quite slow. You should be able to track her down. He obviously doesn't mind losing her much if he sent her that far out.
On another note, how can he possibly lose this many airframes and pilots continually? It's astounding.

RE: The Stone and the Waves
He had time to rebreath...and to refill his squadrons of pilots and planes...he has so many of them in production...
However we were lucky....if the KB had lunched...now we would have been short of 4 BBs... my CAP didn't do as good as i hoped...or better...it did well but the i had nearly 500 fighters between Lunga, Tulagi and Tassa and only less than 100 partecipated in the air battles...and no, i never went overe the stacking limits (both in terms of groups and planes) and have 2 Air HQs (with good leaders) and something like 20 radars there...probably the fact that i kept only 30%CAP (in order to avoid too much fatigue and considering that we play a 2-days-turn) has deminished the numbers of active fighting fighters...
Just imagine what will happen when we'll land at Thousands...how many planes will he send?![X(]

Oh, so the KB should go to war hungry? I'm sure they ate lunch. Who wants to destroy your BB's on an empty stomach?never lunched
Today I come bearing an olive branch in one hand, and the freedom fighter's gun in the other. Do not let the olive branch fall from my hand. I repeat, do not let the olive branch fall from my hand. - Yasser Arafat Speech to UN General Assembly

Yes, Rader told me he ordered to stop providing nagiris, shushis, sashimis and makis 3 days before the attack in order to make his KB pilots hungry...he said he saw that on Discovery Channell during a documentary about the dogs-fighting pits [:D][:D][:D]
I always mismatch hungry with hangry and lunch with launch [:-]

RE: The Stone and the Waves
The Massachusetts' 7 flotation damage is perfect for an ARD--no need for the long round-trip to Pearl. Have you managed to get one in theater yet?
And good luck hosing the Hosho.
Cheers,

Hosho is a slow 25/15 knot CVE with endurance of 8700. She probably needs to refuel at least once before reaching home... She probably has a BB with her and supporting AOs.
