Legends on youtube

Post by MaxyGamer »

It would be great to have Legends video on youtube outlining all those new features that vanilla and shakturi lacked. Would be quite useful since the Legends' new features in my personal and honest opinion are quite grand and would definitely help further with the overall game awareness and its market presence. There are very few games with brains out there and the majority of those real time strategy games lack the depth that DW has. Waiting for Legends now and I cannot find a strategy game that would satisfy my gaming needs and wants... Tried playing something different, but alas, yet to find anything ... the new sword of the stars is going to be the same thing but with better graphics... only true emphasis on war and its machines... as for sins ..oh well.. same crap

One thing I cannot understand is an FPS game. First person shooters EVERYWHERE. We need more decent strategy games but no. More FPS all over youtube. Best games of 2010 - FPS. 2011 - FPS...I mean they all look the same.. all feel the same... very very basic... very nice looking and very boring... Okay, Deus Ex was good so that's an exception but hey it's RPG so that wont count. Not an fps player I suppose though I was quite decent at CS back then in my teens.

Anyways, very very off the subject. Sorry. Point is.. we need Legends on youtube soon. Everyone must see how good this game is. Considering that the release is this year that is quite reasonable to ask at this moment.

We concur. Videos of Legends on Youtube would probably be a very good thing. There still seems to be quite many people who love 4Xs and space strategy in general, but have missed games like DW, SotS and SoaSE, as incredible it may sound.

Have to agree about FPSs and TPSs. There's too much of them. Some of them are good or even excellent, but majority of them are quite avarege or even bad below their shiny surface (Gear of Wars are prime examples of this). Todays DLC policies are also annoying, pure cash in sometimes. That's probably the reason why FPSs are so plentiful today; Easy to make, loads of audiance as shooters are easy to play and master (I hate ADHD kids in shooters), easy to cash in as avarege players don't know any better.

I personally like SoaSE. I always think that It's a RTS with 4X elements, not an 4X with RTS elements.

About good games on consoles: Deus Ex is definetly a GOTY canditate. Skyrim looks very promissing and should be main contender for Deus Ex alongside with the black horse Dark Souls. Arkham City should also be noted.
Forza 4 is almost out and the demo looks, sounds and feels absolutely amazing. Yes, I'm serious car nut and can't wait for next week when the full game rolls out. Can't wait to take Koenigsegg Agera for a spin around Nordschleife.
Apart from those, there's no really interesting console games for me currently.

Nothing is impossible, not if you can imagine it!

Afraid I am not much of console player any longer. Left those years ago. Hence my frustration with PC gaming becoming less .... sophisticated. Obviously I am not talking about respective technological factors. It's the game that primarily I care about. Looks come second if at all (in some certain cases).

You have a wider range of games you can play on various platforms. I admire that. My fav range is somewhat limited and especially with the limited amount of time I am left for gaming on weekly basis, I want some special games. Skyrim will sure make me spend some and so will ME3. Action RPG genre makes me tick.

Good point there, we don't have time for anything less than the best....whatever that means for each of us but rpg's tend to hit my list more than others as well.

Yeah, the title is indeed quite misleading.

here in germany there is always a market for strategy games. german players just love to develop an empire and expand ist. look at the "siedler" "battle isle" and the whole "manager" games.. the most succesfull german games ever were strategy games.

i think such nishe games without a powerfull PR machine behinde (like EA, Blizzard and its commercial power even with TV spots) must use this cheap utilities like youtube more and more to present their game.

i will for sure buy legends and would be also happy to see some (maybe HD) videos about the gameplay.

Am I the only one not fond of information videos? Game reviews and interviews on videos? Bleh. Give me a wall of text and a few screenshots :)

Game trailers are something different and can be fun to watch once in a while.

Nowadays, the youtube is just as powerful medium as TV if not even better. If you ask me, big companies are wasting thier money on TV spots. Ppl who will be interested in buying thier games check out youtube much more often than TV ;).

IMAO of course

I suspect that (what could be seen in the screenshots) the graphics are still stock,
and I remember Eric mentioned this was still the part they are working on.

Naturally this does not mean you cannot post vids, but as a dev I would be reluctant
to post gameplay vids when I know that a few weeks later it looks like a different game.

Or do you think I am expecting to much of this release and graphics will remain (close to) RoTS?

Firstly, I apologize to those fellow forum members who found the thread title rather misleading. Wasn't my intention and actually, at that time, couldn't have guessed how else it would read and be thought of. I just thought everyone knew that there weren't any legends' videos at all and that was just me wishing...

About the audience reach... today's strategy gaming (the genre as a whole) would best be advertised on the Internet. It has a much wider and long-term reach (how long does a tv ad last and how many times a day you see it?) and is, indeed, relatively cheap. Nowadays, people spend more time at their computers than sitting on the couch in front the telly (movies - yes, 3 hours a day MAX and that's my case if I am lucky enough with my time management skills). You can keep some videos on youtube for months if not longer and keep on attracting people. Sources like those make for an ideal competition ground to all games in the genre no matter who the publisher/developer and how grand/limited the respective game budget is. You are almost always able to identify who spent what since the game would look better but for strategy it's the game more than its looks.

Though I do have to admit that many companies don't just use youtube as it's the cheaper/est way out. It is extremely popular and that's what makes this certain 'marketing tool' so attractive. ALL companies use it. You have to in order to compete properly. One thing I have to type though is that people get attracted not just by trailers but also by the videos of fellow gamers who bought the game and now are making own various tutorials/walkthroughs/trailers, etc. I would encourage DW players to do the same. The community would grow and we'd get some fresh meat. [:D]

I never find youtube videos by accident. I either search for them (like a music video), or get a link somewhere. If you put a tv ad on the correct channel at the correct time (for instance in an ad break during a big cycling race on Eurosport International) I will probably stumble across it even without looking.

So I am not sure Youtube is so useful from creating hype from nowhere. But it is useful for multiplying hype. I don't think the DW hype machine reaches all that far all the time...

As for Legends and graphics? I don't expect any revolutions in the interface. Maybe that butt ugly space port gets an graphics overhaul. Maybe even more stuff get some new models? I dream of some better resource overview tools, and a new ship design screen/logic. But no large scale graphics overhaul. I think the game looks just fine apart from a few things like that overly ugly space port that Woodman has saved me from. But some stuff in the interface could have some improved logic in the way it works...

And how much do you expect that kinda ad to cost? During some big event.. only major companies that have just too much cash go that way and even that is quite rare (by the european gaming standards). I work in advertising and that's just the way the trend is pushing itself. Net is the way to go. Youtube or not...nowadays, tv is primarily to watch movies/sports/news. I mean some people just live on the net. Watch it all on the net. Personally speaking, I spend way more time in front of my pc whether at home or office.

Type "space strategy" in youtube and see the results. It ain't exactly by accident but it is sure to attract some attention. You want an ad for a game to go on during some big event on tv, you have to at least make sure that you've got the resources to pull it off, your game is very attractive/appropriate to the general gaming audience of various ages and is meant for the majority of gaming platforms and not just pc. The net is the main true 'media channel' available to all, easily accessible almost everywhere and almost free. Even tv gaming channels go for gaming reviews of popular pricey 'big titles'. When those do review strategy..it isn't my kind...warhammer, etc..thats not the game I care about. question...what do you do when you want to find out if there are any new 4X games soon to be released? ...have you ever seen a 4x game advertised on telly during some event or at all (modern times...not 80s)?

Sure, point made that tv advertising is great for general brand/product awareness but for a strategy game...4x... relatively low budget and nothing uber special to look at (ignorant first impressions)..don't think so. Repeating the aforementioned note that it is also up to community to promote the thing and help it grow bigger. youtube is a great source that must be utilized more often.

How much a TV ad campaign cost? A lot :)

I only see TV spots for the major blockbusters, and it would not be relevant for anything Matrixy.

A good youtube video could be useful to get linked from game news sites, and if the site is "specific" enough maybe a web add could make sense. But unless you can get game news sites to link that youtube video it would be of little use, as I don't think anyone will find it by accident.

Beg to differ, me fellow Distant Worlder. For example, can find distant worlds youtube video by typing 'distant game' ...doesn't have to be 'distant worlds space strategy game'. They guy could be searching for something else.. man, forget the game part... you start typing in the search window 'distant' and there... one of the options is distant worlds..thats good enough for found by accident ...is it not?
