South Seas.
Last night in the area east of the Solomon Islands, and to the north of the Reef Islands in the Santa Cruz group of Islands. The merchant Raider Hokoku Maru which is returning to Truk from the Southern Pacific, meet and engaged the Australian light cruiser Adelaide. I think this Allied cruiser is returning from Nauru Island, after evacuating the Australian troops there. Hits to both sides were scored in this engagement, but no serious damage to both ships resulted I think.

JNAF B5N1 Kate torpedo bombers operating from Jolo sank another three small enemy merchant vessels today in this area. I think that he must now be sending the bigger ships along the north coast of Borneo, as these are just small coasters carrying nothing. But with the Kuching landing force just leaving Cam Ranh Bay tonight, that escape/resupply route won’t last long.

Malaya.
Today I launched the first big JAAF raid from my new Bomber airfield at Alor Star, against the RAF main air-station at Singapore . This raid was meant to have been pre-seeded by a fighter sweep from Kota Bharu, but it happened the other-way around.
The RAF put-up over thirty fighters to defend their airfield at Singapore today, so I think that I will go back to just fighter sweeps from the Kota Bharu for a couple of days. But even though my losses were somewhat high, especially in Ki-21-IIa Sally medium bombers. I think that overall this raid was a success even with the heavy losses, in that it destroyed and damaged many of Tim’s aircraft.

Today I launched was my first offensive fighter sweep over Rangoon, and as I had suspected found a hornets nest of enemy fighters. I had suspected that some of AVG would be present at Rangoon, and it would appear that at-least Squadron is . The action it’s self over Rangoon when well for me, with the downing of 6 probable enemy fighters. But I lost a further four A6M2 Zero fighters, plus their Pilots on the way home and landing.

This division continued to land it’s troops and equipment though-out the day, and will begin the assault on Cagayan tomorrow. This force was spotted in the Island channels between Palawan and Northern Borneo, and two torpedo armed strikes were dispatched during the day with some success. Then in the afternoon another strike was launched on an enemy transport, which had been spotted to the west of Jolo.

A small naval infantry company landed on Nauru Island, and easily took the Island by overpowering the small Australian defending force. The Naval infantry unit that took Nauru will soon be relieved by army shipping and engineer companies. The relieving units will improve and service the small port on Nauru, that will be used to ship the resources produced on the Island back to the Home Islands.

A detachment of JNAF medium bombers operating from Truk, attacked the airfield at Rabaul today in a long range, and low-level raid. This was basically a reconnaissance in-force raid to gage the air-strength of the defending Australian forces. The result was that no enemy aircraft were present at Rabaul, and only a very small ground force was detected.

Celebes and Moluccas.
Landing operations in the Celebes group of Islands began today at Sidate, with an unopposed landing by an independent naval infantry company, put ashore from old converted troop-carrying destroyers. This company will secure the small port tomorrow, in support of a larger force landing at the Dutch base at Manado tomorrow. Another naval landing force will also land at the Dutch outpost at Ternate in the Moluccas tomorrow.
Also for the first time today, Dutch medium bombers struck at my shipping in this area. When a detachment of their aircraft attack my naval force approaching Ternate. But no hits were scored by the enemy bombers, and the light carrier force will be in position to provide fighter cover tomorrow.

It appears that my landing here came before Tim could concentrate his scattered forces on Island to defend Cagayan. An engagement last night in the northern exit of the Sulu sea, between Palawan and Northern Borneo. An American destroyer force, which I suspect had been the escorting the heavy cruiser Houston. A small naval infantry company landed on Nauru Island, and easily took the Island by overpowering the small Australian defending force. The Naval infantry unit that took Nauru will soon be relieved by army shipping and engineer companies. The relieving units will improve and service the small port on Nauru, that will be used to ship the resources produced on the Island back to the Home Islands.

A detachment of JNAF medium bombers operating from Truk, attacked the airfield at Rabaul today in a long range, and low-level raid. This was basically a reconnaissance in-force raid to gage the air-strength of the defending Australian forces. The result was that no enemy aircraft were present at Rabaul, and only a very small ground force was detected.

Celebes and Moluccas.
Landing operations in the Celebes group of Islands began today at Sidate, with an unopposed landing by an independent naval infantry company, put ashore from old converted troop-carrying destroyers. This company will secure the small port tomorrow, in support of a larger force landing at the Dutch base at Manado tomorrow. Another naval landing force will also land at the Dutch outpost at Ternate in the Moluccas tomorrow.
Also for the first time today, Dutch medium bombers struck at my shipping in this area. When a detachment of their aircraft attack my naval force approaching Ternate. But no hits were scored by the enemy bombers, and the light carrier force will be in position to provide fighter cover tomorrow.

An engagement last night in the northern exit of the Sulu sea, between Palawan and Northern Borneo. An American destroyer force, which I suspect had been the escorting the heavy cruiser Houston. Intercepted the Jolo landing force which is returning to Cam Ranh Bay, resulting in some damage to both sides.

Also to top the night off in this area, RO- 64 patrolling off the Deboyne Islands sunk another enemy transport.

Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) medium bombers operating from Ambon, attacked vessels of my naval landing force off Ternate again today. But today my light carrier force is now in position, to cover the landing operations in the Celebes and Moluccas areas. The attacking RNLAF aircraft were intercepted by A6M2 fighters from the light carriers, and either shot-down or driven off.

The landing operations commenced overnight at both Ternate in the Moluccas, and to the north at the forward Dutch base at Manado in the Celebes. Both these enemy bases will be assaulted tomorrow, when the combat elements have been fully landed.
The plan is to base a floatplane detachment on Ternate, for search and reconnaissance purposes. Manado is to be quickly built-up into a JNAF bomber/fighter field with an Air Flotilla HQ, for support of the upcoming Ambon operation.
Luzon.
In the air over Luzon today the only air action was over the landing operations at Aparri and Vigan, with Tim’s American fighter-bombers attempting to strike at my transport shipping again. But again my JAAF fighters protecting both beachheads, were successful in driving off the enemy attackers.

South China Sea.
My naval landing force arrived off the small British port overnight, and began to unload elements of the 2nd division. This unloading of troops and equipment will continue all day, then the transports will retire north for the night. This is because of enemy naval activity in the area, and naval landing force will return tomorrow to continue unloading. Also the combat units will attack the British/Indian defenders tomorrow, in an attempt to take the port.
Now the big new of the day, with a heavy naval engagement with the Royal Navy off Kuching last night. This action took place when an enemy battle force attempted to attack my newly arrived transports off Kuching. My heavy covering force managed to intercept, and engage the enemy force before they sighted the troop transports.
In the heavy naval surface gunfight that followed I sadly lost the Battleship Matsu, to the very accurate British shooting. Also the heavy cruiser Atago which was heavily damaged in the battle, succumbed to flooding later in the day and sank. I think that I caused some damage to the British capital ships, and also sunk a light cruiser, along with two destroyers.
Also later in the night the remainder of my covering force sighted and sunk two small enemy transports off Kuching. Which makes me wonder if the Royal Navy’s force off Kuching was covering an evacuation operation. As air-reconnaissance and search did not show the British force in the area yesterday, and my approaching landing force was only sighted yesterday.
With the possibly of the return of the British force tonight my remaining ships, which are remarkably undamaged will remain on station. I have also despatched to Kuching the two Fuso’s along with their escorting ships, which were operating off Luzon. The seconding Kuching landing force, which contains the back-up forces will still leave Cam Ranh Bay tonight.

Wow. Allied DD's did their job and screened the capital ships, soaking up the torps. Unfortunately, the IJ DD's did not. 2 torp hits on capital ships ... Ouch.

Yes I was somewhat disappointed with the result of this engagement, as most of my destroyers still have torpedoes left after the fight. Also apart from Mutsu, and Atago none of my other combatants suffered a scratch. Must admin though, that the Prince Of Whales's shooting was very good, and She got a straddle on Mutsu with Her second salvo. But that's war for you, and it was a brave move by Tim, and it was his night. [:)]

The naval infantry unit that landed at Ternate in the Moluccas yesterday, assaulted and took the Dutch outpost today. There was no opposition, as Tim had evacuated the Dutch service unit before I arrived. But there was one damaged Dutch Dornier flying boat left behind, which makes me think Tim saw me coming, and pulled out the day before.

The JNAF launched a long-range medium bomber raid on the Dutch defenders at Manado in the Celebes today. This Raid was launched from my JNAF airfield at Babeldaob, and was in support of the assault of my naval ground units at Manado.
The operation to take the forward Dutch base at Manado in the Celebes continued today on the ground, with the continued landing of troops and equipment. Then later in the day my naval infantry made the first assault on the airfield, which was just held off by the enemy. But I am confident that with the number of Dutch casualties today, that I will carry Manado tomorrow.

Luzon.
The 16th division began it’s amphibious landing at Naga overnight, and will continue to land troops and equipment for the next two days. Then this division will advance north toward Manila, with I expect it to reach in five to six days. There is no sign of enemy naval activity in the Naga area yet, but I expect that Tim will attempt to interfere with this operation soon.

South China Sea.
Overnight Dutch motor torpedo boats launched two strikes on my shipping off the landing beaches at Kuching. The first attack was not so serious as my close escorts managed to drive the attacking craft off. But the second attack managed to close with my transports, and do some significant damage to my landing force. So these attacks ended with the sinking of a minesweeper out-right, and heavy damage to two transports, that will probably end-up sinking them both.
Also the Large Transport Argentina Maru struck a rock off Kuching causing very heavy damage, and I expect that She will sink today also. This is the second large transport to hit rocks or reef's, while involved in landing operations, with the loss of a large transport in the Wake landings. So I am seriously thinking of relegating all my large transports to strategic troop lifts only.

The good news from Kuching today, is that my ground assault there succeeded in taking the British base. The British force defending Kuching was forces to surrender, but surprisingly my attacking units suffered no casualties. Kuching will now be built-up into a JAAF medium bomber base, for the Support of operations in Western Borneo, Southern Sumatra, and Northern Java.

My forces advancing south down the Malayan Peninsular took Taiping today, but there was no enemy opposition, as the British had already pulled out. This now isolates the enemy base at George Town, which will be assaulted by an infantry and engineer regiment, that are now advancing on the base.
There was no air-activity over Malaya today, as all my aircraft there were grounded by the weather. This is a bit of a hindrance, it will give Tim a chance to recover from my air-campaign over Singapore.

My forces advancing south down the Malayan Peninsular took Taiping today, but there was no enemy opposition, as the British had already pulled out. This now isolates the enemy base at George Town, which will be assaulted by an infantry and engineer regiment, that are now advancing on the base.
There was no air-activity over Malaya today, as all my aircraft there were grounded by the weather. This is a bit of a hindrance, it will give Tim a chance to recover from my air-campaign over Singapore.

I think that the cat might be out of the big when it comes to my Rabaul operation, as one of my D3AI Vals flying ASW patrol off 1KdB got a signing. With Mussau Island being off the tip of the Bismarck group, and the likelihood that the Allied submarine also signed my aircraft. It would be a foregone conclusion that Tim knows that he has a carrier force operating east of Rabaul. Never mind as the landing convoy is only two days out from Rabaul now, and his local air-search was bound to sight this convoy tomorrow anyway.

This ground operation was also supported by a long-range JNAF medium bomber raid launched from Babeldaob, against enemy troop positions. Some F1M2 Pete float-planes from the heavy cover battleships and cruisers were providing fighter cover, and managed to keep the enemy strike away from my shipping.

I launched another JAAF medium bomber raid from Alor Star on the RAF airfields on Singapore today, and again RAF fighters rose in defence. But my fighter escort was able to fright the raid thought to it’s target with some losses in aircraft, but great damage was done to the enemy for that cost.
But a JNAF anti-shipping strike on Singapore Island today, was not so lucky when it arrived without an escort. The JNAF bombers were from Saigon, and were meant to be covering the Landings at Kuching. But Divepac command forgot that the range setting for the Sarawak Coast, also meant that the aircraft could reach Singapore.

Action over Naga again today, when Tim’s USAAF fighter-bombers attempted to attack my transport shipping unloading supplies. Despite being intercepting by patrolling float-planes from the covering forces, the enemy aircraft managed to make bombing runs on my two fast battleships that are present.
The JAAF launched a medium bomber raid from Formosa today, on the American airfields at Clark Field. This is part of the operation to suppress enemy air power over Luzon, and air reconnaissance is still showing there is still twenty-plus aircraft present at Clark Field. But the good news is that reconnaissance of all of the enemies Luzon airfields, is showing less that twenty American fighters still operating.

The Hosho force has been operating off the Sarawak Coast, in support of Kuching operation for the last three days. But she has unable to launch Her aircraft unit today, because of the weather conditions.
The RAF launched two medium bomber sorties from Singapore again today, against my shipping off Kuching. But today the RAF medium bombers had to contend with JAAF fighters, now based at the captured airfield at Kuching. Also today there were JNAF fighters over Kuching, that were from the light carrier Hosho.

Just a note on China; that there is a lot of ground and air action going on there. It is mainly small scale ground unit road clearing , and air ground support mission for these operations. Also there is an ongoing air-superiority battle being fought-out over Changsha and Hankow. But because of the number of these actions, and time constraints I am note reporting on these events.

South Seas.
Rabaul falls to my troops today, with air-support of a JNAF medium bomber raid from Truk. The carriers and screening forces of 1KdB had have been cruising to the east of New Britain providing fighter cover, along with air-search and anti shipping capability to this operation. The heavy covering surface force was also provided by the fast battleships from 1KdB, screen by an extra light cruiser and a destroyer division from the southern fleet.
But there was no naval or air interference from Tim to the Rabaul operation, other than regular recon flights, that I assume are coming from Port Moresby. The build-up Rabaul into a major base will now begin, with the transfer of service and engineer units from Truk. But the forces of 1KdB will remain in covering positions, until the Rabaul airfield become torpedo capable in about three days.

Rabaul falls to my troops today, with air-support of a JNAF medium bomber raid from Truk. The carriers and screening forces of 1KdB had have been cruising to the east of New Britain providing fighter cover, along with air-search and anti shipping capability to this operation. The heavy covering surface force was also provided by the fast battleships from 1KdB, screen by an extra light cruiser and a destroyer division from the southern fleet.
But there was no naval or air interference from Tim to the Rabaul operation, other than regular recon flights, that I assume are coming from Port Moresby. The build-up Rabaul into a major base will now begin, with the transfer of service and engineer units from Truk. But the forces of 1KdB will remain in covering positions, until the Rabaul airfield become torpedo capable in about three days.

Mindanao.
There was action on the ground in two locations today, on the southern Filipino Island of Mindanao. By the 56th division, in it’s operations to clear the main southern Island of all American and Filipino ground units.
The first was at Butuan in the north of the Island by the 56th divisions reconnaissance regiment, which is covering the flank. When the regiment cleared a Filipino infantry regiment out of the small port town of Butuan. The reconnaissance regiment will pursue the enemy regiment which has retreat to the north.
The other, and larger action was in the mountains in central Mindanao, at the town of Malaybalay. Where the remainder of the 56th division attacked and defeated the main American/Filipino ground force concentration on the Island. The remnants of the defeated enemy force, have retreating toward the west coast port of Cotabato. The 56th division will now advance toward Cotabato with the aim of trapping, and ultimately destroying this enemy force.

I had the JAAF launch a heavy medium bomber raid on Clarke Field today, but for some reason, maybe the overcast weather the raid became string-out. With some of the bomber units arriving over the target without their escort, but likely the casualties were very light.

On the ground on Luzon, the 21st division, and the 48th division’s reconnaissance regiment evicted an American/Filipino infantry division from the town of Cabanatuan. This enemy unit has retreated west to Clark Field, and was I suspect protecting the eastern flank of the American ground force confronting me at Lingayen.
I would now expect Tim to do a combat withdraw of this ground force at Lingayen, back to Clark Field. So if I can get the 21st division across to Clark Field, there is an opportunity for me to seriously damage his Lingayen force, which I suspect contains some of his better combat units.

Whereas the enemy night-fighter’s didn't shoot down any of our machines, they did damage some, and disrupt the aim of the raid. But an offensive fighter sweep carried out by JAAF fighters in the morning, did have some success, and is credited with shooting down several RAF fighters.

Mindanao.
There was action on the ground in two locations today, on the southern Filipino Island of Mindanao. By the 56th division, in it’s operations to clear the main southern Island of all American and Filipino ground units.
The first was at Butuan in the north of the Island by the 56th divisions reconnaissance regiment, which is covering the flank. When the regiment cleared a Filipino infantry regiment out of the small port town of Butuan. The reconnaissance regiment will pursue the enemy regiment which has retreat to the north.
The other, and larger action was in the mountains in central Mindanao, at the town of Malaybalay. Where the remainder of the 56th division attacked and defeated the main American/Filipino ground force concentration on the Island. The remnants of the defeated enemy force, have retreating toward the west coast port of Cotabato. The 56th division will now advance toward Cotabato with the aim of trapping, and ultimately destroying this enemy force.

I suspect that this is an empty personnel convoy, that my morning reconnaissance flight have sighted either entering or leaving harbour. So the question is, weather Tim is reinforcing or lifting troops from Balikpapan. I would take the later, and that he is maybe pulling his Dutch infantry garrisons back to Java.
