Mine Warfare

Mines are working...and much less dangerous for us!)

TF 312 encounters mine field at Port Moresby (98,130)

Allied Ships
DD Sims
DD Frazier
DD Laffey
DD Napier, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

5 mines cleared

So, does that 5 mines cleared count the extra bonus mine clearing Napier peformed? [:D]

Kill em all!

Post by PzB74 »

Yees, 5+1! [:D]

Last turn I decided to set a trap for Allied 4Es over Moulmein; they've been raiding us with impunity lately.
I did observe a weakness though, 450 Allied fighters on CAP over Rangoon means fewer escorts elsewhere.
- The classic "can't be strong everywhere" problem for Andy.

So I gathered our best Franks and George fighters and placed the on LRCAP 80% normal range at 15k feet to optimize performance against bombers.
Woe to us if enemy fighters swept first.

The order was simple: KILL EM ALL!

Somehow our plan coincided with Andy's plan to hit our Army north of Moulmein with his medium bombers while his 4Es hit Moulmein proper.
Mediums went in first and attracted all our CAP fighters, leaving none at Moulmein.

This wouldn't be optimal since I wanted to kill 4Es - however, Andy is low on mediums and the ones he sent in now didn't have a strong escort and now
fighter sweeps went in ahead. The scene was set for bloody murder!

- The kill list was LONG and 177 Allied ac were claimed today.

There are 12 units and a reported 110k troops directly north of our Moulmein army.
Their advantage is the ability to cross the river without forcing a shock attack.
Would it be better for us to withdraw into Moulmein proper?

I have withdrawn the tank divisions and 2 replacement divisions are on the way to Moulmein but this takes time without a Burma railroad...
Currently we have 2000 AV north of Moulmein, 440 AV in Moulmein and 600 AV on the way.

Our army in central Burma still needs another month to march home through the jungle.

Excellent work mate! Now, we can only hope that Andy will not use swagger stick! [:D]

I've told you so ;)

Andy is very easy going with his planes sometimes. And you can set traps from time to time :)

ORIGINAL: PzB

We only lost 6 pilots KIA and 8 wounded today!

[:)] Fighting over friendly ground is soo cool. I know that you are eager for offensive(s), but lets face it, Japan players can't afford such extravagant moves in 44 or latter.

No swagger stick yet [:D]
- Small victory, but we need to farm those...!

True Pauk-San but unless we threatened Rangoon with offensive action Andy wouldn't have kept his 400 fighters on CAP and let us murder his light brigade! [:)]
But yes, we need to win defensive - offensive battles more than offensive - offensive battles now, but to keep our Scot honest we need to show teeth now and then.

Lost 2 subs today, they found convoys ..and DEs are deadly now.

I expected assault on Merauke so ordered bombers to disrupt the enemy.
I keep on feeding small reinforcement units using Mavis seaplane transports; just like in Stalingrad were the Russians fed in barely enough troops to keep the battle going.
The assault on Merauke was stalled again and the shock attack cost enemy div 66 squads disabled; it will quickly run out of steam this way [8D]

This is much of my plan, fight hundreds of small stubborn battles with minimum effort and maximum effect.
Hopefully this will delay other major ops planned by Andy.

Hey! You were about to just get equal air loses! Not fair! [;)]
ORIGINAL: PzB

- The kill list was LONG and 177 Allied ac were claimed today.
The modified air combat model seems to work for smaller packets, but it is still massacre for larger scale. Same, as in WITP.

Is this possible to sweep enemy LCU? If so, you could try if some is nearby, and you have to protect your own base.
Bombardments

Doesn't seem to have any effect...

Just 2 weeks ago one of the players had the same problem. Seems interesting, maybe it is a bug after all?
The assault on Merauke was stalled again and the shock attack cost enemy div 66 squads disabled; it will quickly run out of steam this way
I wonder what would be the result with old combat algorithm. Base seems to actually hold longer, that I would expect.

Got ca 90 Amakazes in the pools; since I got most of the Glens I need and don't plan on producing more than 45 Lorna's I don't plan on putting those engines back into production again.

Pretty sure Andy will catch up soon, but that's not a bad rate in mid 44! [:)]
No idea, will keep an eye on how bombardments work. Either they're devastating or they don't work at all..the middle way is obviously difficult to find.

Yep, ground combat is more protracted now; can't just come and walk all over a well fortified place.
As I see it the malaria effects of marching the Americal Div over the mountains to Buna would have severly reduced its combat value.

This weekend we've been working to get a fix for the sound detectors etc working.
Looks like we're getting close. More details to come.

Position north of Moulmein flanks any enemy attempt to move north, or east, so you should stay where you are.

And seriously, you should gather enough forces to cross river into Pegu, and rout this army. At least keep it bombarded to not allow building of forts.

Also, you should get at least 2 Divisions to Chiang Mai, to counter any future moves in that area.

Rout a 300k army with air superiority and hundreds of 4Es?
- that's a fantasy [:'(]

I have 1500 AV moving into Chiang Mai from Central Burma, eta 1 month....
The troops we have north of Moulmein = 2000 AV - this is not enough to hold if those 300k troops attack.
By pulling into Moulmein and joining up with the garrison there and the 2 fresh divs moving to Moulmein we can boost AV to 3250.
-> that is enough to hold Moulmein.

Our reserves are in the form of 3-4 tank divisions currently resting. Other units need R&R, are still moving in Central Burma or have been assigned to reserve duty in Singapore - Malaya.
Loosing Moulmein would open the road south, so to me it seems most important to keep this "road block" - move our reserves to prevent it from being flanked and stalmate the war.

As Pauk-San said, time for Jap major offensive action is over by 1944.

Well, you can only do that if you will be able to rout them the turn you cross the river [:D]
Just wait, maybe Andy will leave there only small force?

I have actually real Stalingrad type plan, but I think it is not doable with current supply model.

My biggst concern is that those 300k troops can rout our troops north of Moulmein in one shock attack since our engineers fail to build forts here no matter how long we stay.
Even if Andy leave's I'm not sure I want to go back into the Rangoon furnace, only hit and run raids...

So unless I change the orders our army north of Moulmein will move south next turn (not finished my current turn yet, will wait until tomorrow).

PzB, your concerns about retiring to Moulmein are well founded, but there are a few points you may want to consider if you haven't already done so:
(1) The supply situation inside Mm can quickly deteriorate from aerial bombardment as you know.  Unlike in an outside hex. Andy might use that to wear this position down comparably easily, compelling you to retreat, with or without fighting.
(2) The hex north of Mm, though still on the "wrong side" of the river, threatens in fact two of his hexes, the one further west, Pegu, being his communication with Rangoon and his lifeline. He would have to enter your hex from both spots to prevent cutting his rear, or he has to keep Pegu well garrisoned.  For one, you might prevent a large concentration of his forces with that.
Moreover, if he wanted to advance from the present positions, say perhaps towards Rahaeng or Chiang Mei (if he can keep enough supplies flowing thru a jungle route?), and thus outflank Mm, you would threaten even more of his lifeline.  In fact, so much that he could not advance in great strength there.

I am not sure whether this would be the same if you retired to Mm.  If you retired, I would push thru the jungle hex east of Mm towards the secondary road to Rahaeng if I was in Andys situation, and aim for your own supply line. He could protect his much better in that case, as for you an attack north of Mm on his rear would then mean crossing the river. So he could secure that hex with a rather small force...

Not sure, to be honest, what the best course would be.  Probably a case of Murphys law here.  Perhaps since the river crossing benefit would also be yours, you could similarly hold Mm only with a small forward force, and send the rest into the jungle towards the SE, or even to Rahaeng, to be ready to move in any direction?

Thx for the thoughts! [:)]

I've considered it all carefully and my main concern is still to keep our Burma Army intact.
Until our Central Burma Army currently stranded north of Chiang May has marched south we need to delay and I can't afford to have our Moulmein Army routed now.

Ideally I want to defend in rough terrain, attacker needs 3 or 4-1 in troops to win a prolonged slogging match in such terrain.
If Andy moves into the wilderness east of Moulmein we'll see it and have plenty of time to deploy accordingly.

Will consider our alternatives more closely in the weeks to come, half way decisions without a solid plan isn't good enough right now...

Regarding your lack of fort building, are your units in combat mode? If they are set to rest/training they won't build.

Yes, ofcourse - all units in combat mode or they would be shredded by air.
Somehow fort building just doesn't happen here....

Interesting turn (not for the combat events though - skipped the 110 air missions that almost bored me to death today:=)!
- As we marched back into Moulmein 110k enemy troops moved south from the hex east of Pegu.

I liked the elegance of this, like sparring were one side is trusting while the other is riposting! [:)]

I think we read Andy correct this time; he wanted to move half his army in from the north and afterwards he could march the remaining divisions from Pegu
without risking a shock attack.

Without forts in plain jungle we've already seen that it's hard to hold.
So now we have made Andy think again - if he wants to avoid massive shock attack against an even harder target he will have to move a massive army into a jungle without roads.
I'm moving 2 tank divisions to Rahaeng, the hex to the west is rough jungle and it can easily move to Moulmein proper if required. The enemy troops can now also be bombarded from the sea..but not sure that's really efficient unless we bring the Yamatos [8|] It may become more rewarding to sweep the hex north of Moulmein now; it's closer to our base and further away from Rangoon so leaky CAP will be less effective.

In Buna another attack by the Americal division is frustrated; using huge Mavis seaplane transports we keep trickling in reserves while regular transports keep the place supplied from the air
while barges shuttle supplies into Lae area were it continues to flow south and west.

(1) Buna will fall within days. Next turn if Andy gets some luck with dice rolls.

(2) Massive activity at PH ... CVE's and lots of other ships but no CV's?

(3) Andy still has enough time left (before the monsoon) to 'outflank' Moulmein by moving a sizeable stack of troops in the hex east of Moulmein. I don't think that you'll be able to hold Moulmein before the monsoon hits.
