The supply is coming into both Djambi and Praebemolih but it's still a trickle. If I can get 200-300 in both bases in the next few turnsI'll go back to other activities and await the landing in Palembang. No fighters sortied from Palembang last turn, but it appears he moved in another group as 25 are listed now.

The mini-KB is still awaiting more Zero replacements to fill out its squads. Production is high, up to almost 100, but it's still taking forever to fill out all necessary groups. The KB will hope to top up in 3-4 turns as well, so there is no extra to go around.

Oscars only got about 5 Buffalos this turn for 1 loss.

China

The Chinese corps in Pakhoi is down to 77AV and we'll attack in the next few turns.

I have a question about strategy in China. Do I want to annihilate these weak corps when I can only to have them pop up at 1/3 strength in Chunking a month later? I am thinking currently that it might be better to weaken them critically, then let them flounder and move forward. But then they must keep a lot of experience, so if they do build up they could really be dangerous. It just seems for supply that it makes more sense to crush them almost to the end, to about 50 AV worth, then stop. Let them have to use supply and pools to replace more troops rather than getting free units back in the queue.

What is the consensus on these options? I'd welcome any thoughts.

South Pacific

The Tulagi invasion landed and will take the base tomorrow. No sign of anything nearby. A Fast transport is going to drop troops at Milne Bay in about 3 turns as well. Finschafen is next for one of the small AF Coy units that has been taking the bases on North New Guinea. I'll have to bring in something to Lae soon to make sure he doesn't walk over and take it back.

Central Pacific

The Canton invasion should land tomorrow. I'm wary of this one. He knows the KB has passed and this is the first place he'd look to see if he can find something from PH. No sign of sighting, as the detection levels are still 0.

Thanks Jzanes. There are some stragglers he's left to harrass in Southern China, I'm now finding. Just a few in forest hexes on roads I'll want to use. I think I agree with you on these, that I don't want them to hang out and step over the road in a month when I really need that supply line.

Submarines

Our subs did fairly well in the scramble to get Allied ships out of the DEI, picking off quite a few around Billiton. They have been redeployed near Soerebaja, only in deep water hexes. A few are in the Pacific between the mainland and Hawaii. I'm beginning to get the feeling that the Allies are not using this route at all. There are several ideas floating around HQ the past few days. One is that the shipping is taking the far southern route and will come up into New Zealand or even Melbourne. The other is that much of it is going completely around through the canal to Cape Town, and will come back from there to Australia. Both of these theories could be supported by the large blip that moved down toward the canal for two days in our radio traffic sigint report. Not much to go on, but there is nothing out there, and it has to be going somewhere.

The Allied subs are attacking often, and although the usual torpedo problems are limiting their successes, the Dutch and British subs especially are doing well. Including the hit on theKumano by SS O-16. (Kumano is in Hong Kong for 55 days of repairs).

I-19

Based on my early luck with subs I've decided on a new sub to follow. The I-19 did fairly well in real war, famous for sinking the USS Wasp and USS O'Brien with one salvo of six torpedoes, (another of which hit and damaged the USS North Carolina).

The I-19 began the war near Hawaii. Currently she is on patrol between Hawaii and the West coast. Not even a sighting out here yet.

DEI

Dutch bombers are hitting the base at Prabaemolih. I set the zeros there on night CAP, but of course this did little to stop them. Only doing minor damage, so I'm not that concerned. More supply is getting in than is being destroyed for now. Djambi is up to about 350 supply as well and I've moved the Oscars away as there was no real reason for them there after the initial push.

Our sweeps are still doing well. At Palembang another 5 B-339D went down for 1 zero. At Singapore 16 more Buffalo 1 met their fate. We lost no Oscars in A to A but had 4 ops losses.

The best result today was bombing Cagayan, where the B-17s have been based. 30 Nells attacked from 8,000 ft while zeros went in at 100 feet to strafe and took no losses. Between them 2 B-17 were destroyed and at least 12 damaged. The recon showed 4 bombers 12 aux, which might be the damaged ones. We'll do it again tomorrow.

I've had a change of mind and one of the divisions bound for Singapore will stop first in Palembang. D-Day is 5-7 days away.

PI

About 450 AV of IJA troops deliberate attacked 2 PA Rgt at Batangas. One had already been roughed up and was only worth 55 AV for this engagement. A full 1/3 of the total Allied troops were destroyed and we took the base at 5-1. It's great to get three of these units messed up before even starting on Manilla and Clark. If allowed to make it back inside the defenses and get experience over the next months, they could have been much tougher to deal with. Now they are severely weakened and will need supply and quite a lot of time to build up again.

Strikes moved onto Clark airfield today for 34 damage. I'll keep shifting bases every turn just to delay fort building everywhere and keep him guessing in case he has fighters hidden somewhere ready to spring back in. Not likely.

Central Pacific

Canton Island fell today. No sign of a naval presence. 2 Cats destroyed, which is good. I'll keep these two naval guard units here for good. A base force will arrive next turn and then the Betties. Just a small group of 9 to scout and hit passing traffic.

South Pacific

Our fast transport landed a guard unit at Milne Bay today. No detection level rise. Strange. There must be Cats in Port Moresby, right? I've got no recond here yet, but I might fly some Mavis over and see what they see.

DEI

The Allies got one Christmas present when another Dutch sub slammed home two torpedoes into another Myoko class CA, I forget which one. Of course this happened near Ambon. I need to put this place behind us and move on. She is at pierside now in Ambon with about 40 system, 34 float, and 16 engine damage. I'm lucky again that it's not much worse. Two hits were dropped on the KVII (I think it was this one) but neither were penetrating, just causing leaks.

In the air 18 zeros flew into Palembang and downed 4 B-339s without a loss. At Singapore we unleashed the Sallies, and flew a bunch of sweeps. 14 more Buffaloes shot up, but 4 Oscars that were escorting were also lost, and 3 Sallies. Only 7 hits were registered on the airfield. Tomorrow 3 groups of about 80 Oscars total will sweep, as he'll probably feel relatively good about yesterday's result and expect something like the same. Maybe even put up more fighters.

China

At Pakhoi the deliberate attack came off at 13 to 1 and 1/3 of the Chinese Corps there was wiped out. Not bad. But unfortunately recon shows there are 7 Chinese units, 62,000 troops, at Liuchow and at least some are moving toward Nanning. That could be between 800-1000 AV worth. So we're going to stay put at Pakhoi for now and keep bombing the fields and building forts. There is not a lot of extra manpower right now until I can buy some more units from Manchuria. I have my eye on several more Armour units, all of the combat engineers, and some high experience Regiments first. Most of these will be involved in fighting for Lanchow and Urumchi in the North. So in the far south here the only option is to sit and wait for the divisions going take Wenchow and that area to finish their work. In the meantime I'll try to mercilessly bomb this stack while it's in the clear hex at Liuchow.

No AVG to be seen.

Everything has landed at Canton Island, and only one more turn of unloading supply hopefully before we can get outta dodge. Don't like it out here with no air support or eyes. Betties in next turn.

The KB is reunited at Truk, getting a few new planes and pilots, some fuel, and it's off to the DEI.

Update

It's about time I looked at what all of the units and groups I'm following are up to, and where they are headed.

I-19

After the unfortunate loss of the I-25 I chose to follow the I-19, which is currently out in the approaches to PH, about 15 hexes out, on a N-S line patrol. So far nothing has been seen out here. The Glen is set to search at 4 hexes 50%. I'm working to find out where the supply convoys are going.

Tainan Ku S-1

This unit has recently moved to Jolo to escort the Nells here and support further landings on Mindanao, Borneo, and in the Celebes. They attacked the airfield at Cagayan and helped push the B-17s based there out of the area. The airfield is now listing no planes, and because many were damaged there I'm thinking he withdrew these groups. Good news for Miri, where he'd been night bombing the oil and had it down to 117 (183).

So far this group has 37 kills to only 2 pilots lost! No single pilot has more than 2 kills.

Next up will be a move to a base closer to Java, either Balikpapan, Macassar, or Koepang, depending on what falls first.

DD Shiranui

After the long cruise to and from the Hawaiian Islands, Shiranui and the rest of the KB are resting and replenishing at Truk on their way to the DEI. The DD has 2 system and 1 engine damage from the extensive use, but there is no time to disband and heal yet, as in one or two days the KB will move out again.

xAK-t Oregon Maru

This transport has finished the upgrade and is now at Tokyo awaiting a mission to transport troops to a base in the Pacific. Quite a few guard and base units are coming up in the queue and ships are moving to the appropriate bases to prepare for the transfers to their deployment locations. I will mainly use Tokyo to send troops to the Pacific and Nagasaki/Sasebo to ship troops to the DEI.

AMC Hokoku Maru

This ship and another AMC are nearing Truk where they will update their air groups to Jakes. They will gather a small group of ships and attempt to move deep into enemy territory south of Canton Island and set up along the southern edge of the map. I'll bring along at least one AO and an AV, but nothing else too valuable. More than anything I want to be able to find the routes he's using in the Pacific and stay out of sight. Once into the area around Pago Pago most of the TF will try to stay hidden far to the south while one of the AMCs goes up farther to look around.

14th Tank Regiment

This unit is moving with 2 other tank groups to push remaining Allied troops on Malaya down and open up the rail lines to move the rest of the Army toward Singapore. I haven't decided if the tanks will take part in the actual siege of Singapore. My experience is that they get trashed going in and aren't very useful here. Maybe if I hold them back until the rest of the troops are in and then add them they won't shock going across the water. Or I might decide they would be more useful in Burma right away. I have about 3,000 AV going in toward Singapore aside from these.

PB Nagato Maru

Nagato Maru has almost finished the work at Nagoya to transform the ship into a PB. She'll move to Tokyo when finished to escort convoys south.

26-27 Dec 1941

Two relatively quiet turns. As the KB gets ready to move, the Mini-KB is refilled and ready to support the Palembang landings. It's moving now up toward Singkawang. There is a SCTF with it including 3 BBs, and also an ASW TF of 4 DDs. I have all Kates on ASW as well, as there really isn't any Allied shipping around. I just reconned Soerabaja, and there is only 1 DD in port and only 4 Aux aircraft at the base. Odd. I'll do more recon in the next few days and try to determine if it's even needed to bring the KB into the DEI. I looks like he's pulled everything out that he can.

If Palembang is successful and it doesn't look like there is any major shipping or naval opposition in the area, I may take the KB on a sightseeing tour of the Australian coastline. It seems he has no air presence at Port Moresby either, so it's possible I could sneak down into the area near Noumea without being seen. I'll send a DD down there to see what happens and when it gets noticed or attacked.

No Buffalos over Singapore these days. I've just swept for two turns in a row, and next turn it's back to 100 Ki-21-IIA.

DEI

The Palembang invasion force is 4 hexes away from landing. I'm minesweeping the hex outside Palembang, and one DMS took out 7 mines yesterday. No air or naval attacks on the convoy materialized today. It's covered by about 40 zeros on LR CAP as well as a SCTF headed by two CAs and an ASW TF.

The 1st Raiding unit in Prabaemolih began moving toward Oosthaven today. There are Betties on search from our new outpost at Sabang, but nothing was seen stirring in the Indian Ocean.

At Ambon a group of 4 PTs came in to try out the two destroyer groups there, and in spite of a daytime battle, seeing them first, and taking the first shots, none were hit. I'm going to do some experiments next turn. I'm splitting the Betty group, and sending two out with torps and one with bombs from 1,000 ft. Also the A6M2s are on naval attack from 100 ft. We'll see if we can hit a PT boat for once from the air.

PI

The southern group of troops at Batangas is now moving into Manilla. The Allies are still holding here with what recon reports to be 24,000 troops. Many of those are probably not in peak condition after getting pushed around during the past week. This suits our strategy here perfectly. The IJA will move in enough to make these guys retreat, further depleting the Allied force on Luzon and making us bring in less to finish them off later. I know this is a good defensive hex, and three is supply here, but it seems counterproductive to keep it for the Allies at this point, considering the air superiority we have and the amount of supply that must go to keep fixing the airfield.

South Pacific

I'm wary of the silence in the Solomons and around New Guinea. No sign of anything since the Perth and Canberra tried to intercept our landing at Shortlands. I've got the 4 Furatakas and 4 DDs patrolling between Tulagi and Rossel Island as task forces unload. Once I get search into Rossel Island I'll relax a bit and start sending more engineer units down that are landing at Rabaul.

If this quiet seems real, I'll scout down to Noumea and see if he's building anything and throwing troops in there. If not, I'd like to take the place before he has a chance to do something. I don't really want to build it up, I just want to keep the Allies from using it for a while and also to get a clear path of unsearched ocean into the Southern regions for ships to begin raiding his supply lines. I would most likely take Noumea with a Naval Guard or two if it's still only held by the original force, then pull these out and just keep an AV there for a few float planes.

Central Pacific

At Canton Island a group of 9 Betties flew in and should provide some early warning now.

DEI:The Palembang invasion force landed. An xAP took 4 hits from the shore guns, but no other major casualties here. One small PB lost to a sub on the way in as well. The troops have landed well in spite of not being prepped for the occasion, and there is already 531 on the ground with only 12 disruption. A deliberate attack is set for tomorrow.

At least three float planes hit our LR CAP trying to fly into Palembang with more troops. He has pieces of over ten units there, but of course they are all small and Dutch. No sign of the Dutch air force other than nightly raids on Prabaemolih, and the entire British airforce seems to have pulled out of Singapore.

Burma:Our recon in Burma shows very little there. Mandalay has one unit, Lashio none, Rangoon only one. It seems he's made a dash for it and left the Burmese to fend for themselves. I'm scanning up the mountain road now to see if the Chinese troops are still near Kunming.

We're attacking at Moulmein next turn.

China:The northern tank units are pushing up to the fleeing Corps on the road to Lanchow. I've been bombing them to slow them down as well. I want to knock these things around so they can't add to the defense of the city later. Also, I want to get them off of the road to Urumchi so other tanks being bought now out of Manchuria can push up there unseen.

Still bombing the corps retreating from Pakhoi. Lots of squads being destroyed now, which is good.

We're moving in on Wenchow with a Division and a Rgt. Another Division is moving parallel to the north if it looks like it will be needed there.

Aleutians: There was a minor naval battle up here in the wintry seas this turn. The two princes, Prince Robert and Prince Henry came up to defend the Allied concerns here and ran into my fast transport TF. He put two 6 inch hits on my CL and we got 5 various hits on the PR, leaving it with heavy fires. I'm trying to pursue with my own AMCs as the other combat ships are out of ammo.

Subs: Finally got a hit near San Diego when the I-6 put one torpedo into an xAK going into the Canal, it looked like. It was right above the spot where the wormhole starts. Looks like he is moving stuff around the long way off map. I'll have to put a few subs near Perth.

30 Dec 1941

DEI: The major news today, related to the Allied troops through Orphan Ann's radio broadcast, is that Palembang fell to IJA troops. Amazingly, there is NO damage to the oil and refining facilities! Very happy about that. The troops suffered slightly, and will rest for a few turns before proceeding with the mop-up operations. I've started prepping them for Soerabaja. I know it will be a while before they get there, but if opportunity presents itself to get a quick landing base through a para-drop I want to be ready to go.

The 1st Raiding Rgt is moving toward Oosthaven, and this seems to be making him pull troops out there, as shown by recon. I thikn in a few days we'll try a para drop before he's got them all out. Maybe catch the bomber group still there and a few of the 3 units he's moving out.

In other news, one of the Naval Guard heading into Balikpapan arrived before the other. Annoying. Now it'll be a few days of rest, a I'm sure neither will take it on their solo shock attacks, but they'll get mightily disrupted. I'll start bombing the troops there to get ready for the next attack. At least now I might be able to only deliberate attack, which could leave the facilities better off.

PI: Some troops moved into Manilla. No bombardments by the Allies, so no idea the exact composition of his forces there yet. After the arty moves in next turn we'll bombard to see what we're up against. This should allow all engineer units and the HQ to get into the action as well. Bombing the troops at Manilla and the Bataan airfield again this turn.

I think moving the air out of the PI so early really makes it easy for the Japanese. I would have left them, even if I only used them periodically, as then the airforces have to be escorted, the bases have to be swept, etc. As it is, I have only two small 9 zero groups left here as insurance against him having a hidden group hanging out in one of the smaller islands. The rest have moved on and are working toward the bases on Java.

South Pacific: The Mavis and Jakes moved into Rossel Island. We'll have a look around now. Base force moving toward Milne Bay. Invasion with a small SNLF moving toward Lae.

North Pacific: Some action still brewing up here. Sent a 2 DD TF toward Cold Bay where some transports are unloading. Sent the AMCs into the retreat area to try to pick off the Allied AMCs now most likely low on ammo. We have Jakes on search, and an AV with three Es is moving in from Amchitka as well. The Es will break off if we can locate the retreating ships, but they only have 12cm guns, so we'll try for night action and hope the TFs don't have DD escorts. Mavis are on Naval attack at 18 hexes as well but this turn didn't go for anything.

31 Dec 1941

December is ending, and the Japanese forces move into 1942 with some good pace, some great successes, and some failures in naval battles that will cause longer repercussions for strategy in the coming months and years. Once southern Sumatra is solidified, and Borneo is cleaned up, the main focus in the DEI will be a quick entry landing onto Java that can be strengthened and broadened into a campaign for the resources and industry there. Our next targets are Kendari, Koepang and Macassar.

DEI:Para-troopers will attempt to take Oosthaven next turn. It's down to 550 troops, so should be ready for a quick conquest. The usual bombing of Singapore produced minimal results again today, but enough to again stall fort building, which is the only reason we're bombing.

We're experimenting with methods of battling PT Boats from air attacks. Set Zeros on 100 ft naval attack, and they did get lots of shell hits this turn, but I'm not sure how much damage they really caused. Tomorrow I'll try them from 10,000, which I think should be a dive bombing attack.

Still battling the subs near Ambon. At least three there stalking the CA in Ambon harbour. Two new ASW TFs are moving in today, and one on the way after that. A Lily unit, a group of Jakes, and the Betties are all on ASW, and we're starting to see attack messages during ASW patrols. It's shallow water, the subs have high detection, all kinds of ships are there looking for them. Still, they are not getting hit critically enough to leave the area. What to do?

PI: Bombing the troops at Manilla gives some results. Our arty is moved in. Bombarding starts this turn. Moving in toward Cagayan on Mindanao. Also have a Naval guard moving toward Malaybalay in the hope of getting there to keep Allied troops from retreating up into the mountains.

N PAC: A running battle between my two mini-DDs, Momi class I think, fighting the Allied AMCs. The Prince Robert looks mortally wounded, whiel the Prince Henry must have used its ammo up and is damaged. Should be ripe for attacking with our AMCs if we can catch it. Our DDs suffered some damage from the 6inch shells, around 35-30-15 each, and will try to make it back to the yards at Hakodote.

S PAC:

Sending two DDs on separate solo scouting missions to either side of Noumea to see if they get picked up by air patrols here. Not much else happening.
