Artillery Ammo

Post by pcelt »

I apologise for raising another query --but I promise to stop soon.

Re Artillery bombardment --I am finding that though my artillery unit info is displaying 87X 75mmAP and 87X 75mm HE the display for that unit in the FS List of arty units I am commanding is showing no ammo available for firing (no coloured line at all)
Am I missing a key factor here which accounts for what appears to be an anomole.
Any clarification please....

What unit?

In 75mm, I'd hazard a guess at one of the German SP IG units? These don't have the leIG of the infantry, but rather a direct-fire implementation using redundant armament from PzIV E and earlier models.

Lieste--- i am fighting the Hell on Wheels battle from the American side and the unit i was referring to specifically was the U.S. 14 Arm FA Bn---but there are similar probs with some of the other arty units with apparent stocks of ammo but no ammo showing for firing in FS display.
Thanks

Well, the Arm'd FA Bn have a mix of 105mm (indirect capable) M7 HMC, and close protection 75mm M4 gun tanks. The 75mm ammunition is counted as direct fire ammunition and will be expended on targets the unit can see (which ideally is seldom if ever - sighting can go both ways, and 21cm HE rounds can really ruin your day, not to mention the problems you'll have if your 'targets' are anything as nasty as Tiger IIs...).

When you have 105mm HE ammunition you'll also see the 'artillery ammunition' filling up. (105mm HEAT also counts as direct fire only, and doesn't affect the artillery ammunition count).

The Rule is:
Direct fire - indicated as ammunition.
Indirect fire (capable) - indicated as artillery ammunition - though usually this could also be expended direct fire at a higher accuracy/effectiveness.

Lieste -Thanks yet again for clarifying--I should have sorted out the self-protective direct armament ammo from the indirect firing ammo--too much woolly and lazy thinking going on.......
Cheers.
