MacArthur's Escape and the Doolittle Raid

A couple of questions:

- I'm wondering what is the best means to smuggle Douglas MacArthur out of the Philippines? I know it was done by Submarine, but I am unable to find any subs that list troop transport capacity.

- also, has anybody replicated the Doolittle raid on Tokyo? Is is just a matter of putting the bombers on the Carrier, and hope for the best. Just curious.

btw this game is awesome. After a little tinkering against the AI, I started a PBEM with a Japan opponenet. I'm just learning as I go, and have to say, this game pull the player in. Its nice to play a game that you begin to build a long term attachment to. Cheers.[&o]

You don't need to extract doug. The HQ unit he's in in the Philippines can stay and be destroyed without penalty. Later on an HQ will arrive in Australia with a brand new doug to use. If you somehow manage to preserve the Philippines HQ you get to have 2 Douglas MacArthurs. (and I think he was smuggled out IRL by PT boat, not subs)

As for the doolittle raid, it isn't possible with the witp game engine. Taking off from one location, bombing another and then landing in a different location just isn't built into the game.

edit: oh and there are 3 allied subs that can transport troops, but they can't do it until converted to SST, which isn't possible till some time in 1942.

Using the editor, it is possible to simulate the Doolittle Raid.

The only difference would be that the B-25s would take off from, and return to, the CV, rather than continue on to a land base, but otherwise all details can be replicated.

I think that's right - PT boat from Corregidor to the mainland - and B17 from PI to Australia.

From the reviews it sounds like the author doesn't like Mac very much. Different POV's though are always useful. Manchester's bio on Mac was very good and pointed out both the good and the bad and the recent Fortress Rabaul also gave additional insight into MacArthur's influence and decision making in regards to New Gunea.

The difficulty with Mac isn't helping his to escape. It's trying to get him captured. I've been trying since the game came out. [:(][:D]

I think of him as the right guy in the PI to have before the war and the right guy to have in Japan after the war and the right guy to have Juneau during the war.[;)]

The one thing I will always see as a true determiner of his character is his attempts to block Wainwright's medal of honor.... That showed the true Doug....

Yep, MacArthur did indeed escape via Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 3 (if you've seen "They Were Expendable" with Robert Montgomery and John Wayne, their take on it is included in the film).  Lt. Bulkeley and his boats picked him up at Corregidor and took him south to Del Monte, Mindanao, where MacArthur and his family got on a B-17 to Australia.

Personally I think thats the problem, enough to bear repeating. People tend to focus on his personality traits and at times outlandish behavior, not his war record. Popular leaders tend to get the opposite treatment. Their blemishes are forgiven more, like in Eisenhower's case. Leaders though are a subject where people either love em or hate em and nothing anyone says will sway it. [:)] Still.....i'm enjoying the book Don recommended.
