RE: Kill em all!
Obviously Andy doesnt have much sympathy for this nerf since the 8 hex range burned him twice. The picture from my side is still different, nerf is ok because you have won enough..time to get even [8|]
I've spent mu h time and fuel to position and move KB and oilers to Cent Pac only to find that our strike capabilities have been undermined.
Andy says he will use react on his cv tfs from now on to avoid the 8 hex strikes..maybe that's an advantage we can use.
But going 1-1 with a force stronger than us with reduced payloads and range is not an option.
The question that returns to me is "Would Japan really equip all their Judy dive bombers with hard points for wing mounted drop tanks and only use them for transfers and long range search versions?"
I'm convinced that the Judy could carry at least a reduced payload plus drop tanks..until the numerous web sources change their range data I will continue to look for conclusive data.

I smell something rotten here[:-]
Sorry to hear about that mate, it seems i was right with swagger stick propecy [:'(][:(].
nevertheless, im sure you will adopt to the new situation here and prepare KB and rest of your's AF for next set of "mother of all battles". [:D]
It seems that you have to watch from now for:
a) central pacific (Marians)
b) northern Guinea (thrust via Torres strait to north Guinea.

RE: Kill em all!
i think the real issue is.. the limit on strike range.. why not let the player choose the range of his strikes.. the key problem with launching long range strikes is its very difficult to find the enemy where he should be..
-he could potentially change course and steam right out of your range,
-your returning aircraft are likely to drop into the ocean from lack of fuel,
-you have no fuel left to search for the enemy fleet, and no time for combat operations once over target.
-you leave yourself vulnerable to an enemy counter attack which can be more accurate now that they can follow your planes right back to their source since they cannot alter course or zig zag on the way back..
- reduced paylaods of course
- you have to fly at vulnerable cruise speed wont have any extra fuel to fly at increased (fuel inefficient) high speeds, this will increase the time he can intercept you on egress / ingress and increase the time he has to react to your detection
- you may have to fly at lower altitude since you may not have time fuel to climb to altitude
- probably have to limit the strike size since it will take a long time to get everyone in / out of the air burning up fuel, this probably means you can only launch a partial strike.
-if the other guys strike package failed to connect with your carriers they will have to dump ordinance land rearm refuel. ect, you loose alot of time meanwhile he can pounce on you while he knows most of your planes on deck loaded with fuel.. or they are unprepared for combat, or they busy landing
all these factors don't feel like they are modeled accurately in game at all, these are the real reasons why you would never launch a long range strike not because it wasn't possible, but because it was suicide.

I hope you can come up with something conclusive. The problem with all the web sources that I have seen is that they all seem to be the same. That is, all seem to be taken from the same source with no references and no citations. Some are obviously just cut and pastes from the others. Tends to be a big problem out there at the University of Google.
What little I know is that the Judy was light and designed for speed which usually means lower wing loading, which usually means less lift and higher take off speeds. Certainly less lift than virtually all Allied carrier aircraft of the period. So take off weight from a carrier might have been a very fine point for the Judy. And could she handle a full load and tanks from land if given a decent runway? Nobody seems to have the answer.
I really can't find any real decent source on the Judy other than "gloss over" stuff on the net. Can anyone recommend a good in depth source on Japanese planes?

Yes, I said to Andy that the entire 8 vs 7 hex strike range limit should be removed and replaced by a variety of penalties for long range strikes.
As it is lba can connect at up to 16 hexes or so, but then usually single squadrons. With perfect spotting, good weather etc fuel and pilot fatigue would be the most limiting factors...

The range limit for a/c flying from a carrier is due to getting off the short carrier deck with both fuel and ordnance. So, getting rid of that would also require making major changes to the aircraft ordnance routine to more finely tune what ordnance is carried at which ranges (I'm not suggesting that has to be under human control, just that the code would have to account for it). I really doubt that's the sort of change they would undertake as it's really fundamental and pretty much would have to apply to LBA also. Yes, it would be an improvement, but it's so major I really don't see it happening.

RE: Kill em all!
No, it would have to be simpliied...remove restrictions and generalize.
CAG groups can sortie their max range just as lba. Very seldom see lba strikes beyond the 8-10 hex range.
Launching at long range will cost you in form of ops losses, lack of coordination and high pilot fatigue.

Empty weight wingloadings(the lower the better, kg/m^2)
D3A: 103
D4Y: 74
SBD: 96
Empty powerloadings(higher the better, hp/m(in kg))
D3A: 0,51
D4Y: 0,57
SBD: 0,41
Full ordnance and fuel powerloadings:
D3A: 0,32 (+1550kg)
D4Y: 0,32 (+1800kg)
SBD: 0,25 (+1950kg (includes small droptanks? This is SBD-5)
Just pulled engine power ratings, empty weights and max takeoff weights from Wikipedia so these definitely arent 100% accurate but should be close enough.
D4Y1 had 200hp less power than the D2 used here so it'd seem that no range advantage above D3A is justified if it is to carry 500kg bomb as CV deck length will probably become issue. D2 with improved engine however improves power to weight ratio so much it shouldnt be a problem any more.

RE: Kill em all!
No attacks on Christmas Island today; enemy amph TFs move away while Allied carriers launch a 100% ground strike...that hits Fanning Island!!!
I posted a damage report to Andy, thinking 500 casualties in a level 6 fort base was a bit much. Didn't get much sympathy, he fumed over his strike package that
went awry and hit the wrong island [:D]
In total 10 Superforts have been reported lost after continous sorties, fatigue must be high and with few reserves Andy is quickly running them down.
Our chance now is to wait out the Allied carriers - if they run low on sorties they have to RTB..if that happens we can race in and pummel the Allied troops.
In Burma 4 large Allied tank units rumble into the jungle east of Moulmein, in WitP jungle is quite ok tank country you see.
So we will have these units on one or both of the road hexes in a few weeks. This is were our Army bombers will have to prove themselves by hurting and delaying these armored units.
I will have to deploy our armor on the road as well together with some inf and AA units. The problem is that Allied air will murder them so we have to return the favor, only this way can we retain the deadlock..which we have to. We have quite a lot of reserves so perhaps we in due time can achieve something here even though I'm not to optimistic because of Allied air power.
With 300k enemy troops north of Moulmein I can reduce the Moulmein garrison, 3000 AV should be enough. Perhaps we can hit the enemy armor with air and ground attacks and defeat them if we coordinate well!
This is really were we need to stop the Allied steamroller in Burma.
Allied 4Es in Burma mined 4-5 of our Indo China ports today, not a big deal really but it reminded me that Camh Ran Bay and Saigon can now be hit by enemy 4E. Need some CAP fighters there.
Btw: Do you know if the Grace dive / torpedo bombers carry 250 or 500 kg bombs?

Burma

You can see the LCU that took most of the heat at Fanning Island.
Told Andy that these guys were badgers living in tunnels...but nope, no respect.
They should die when hit by 500 bombers whether part of this earth of underworld.

Burma

You can see the LCU that took most of the heat at Fanning Island.
Told Andy that these guys were badgers living in tunnels...but nope, no respect.
They should die when hit by 500 bombers whether part of this earth of underworld.
Got a new float plane dive bomber...will produce some of these and place them on atolls and small bypassed bases.
Perfect for harassing easily annoyable Scots [:D]

RE: Kill em all!
PzB,
Generally speaking until the D4Y4 comes around the B7A2 is superior. It carries 2 x 250Kg bombs IIRC instead of a 500 Kg bomb ( some of this depends on the choices made by the mod designer of course ) but its saving grace (boom, boom ) is that once you begin building the B7A2 you no longer have to worry about having different divebomber and torpedobombers. You can just use the B7A2 to equip both types of squadron. Theoretically you lose out in terms of penetration power by having 2 x 250 Kg bombs but I always felt that a 250 Kg bomb was enough to penetrate CV decks and having two of them doubled my chances of actually getting a hit so I thought that was quite a good trade-off.
If you select bombs then the torpedoes are swapped out for 2 x 250Kg bombs... or, if port attacking, an 800 Kg bomb which makes the Grace a really worthwhile port attack plane, capable of putting an 800 Kg bomb right through the deck armour of any BB in the game. With its long range it is a useful and cheap harraser to stage into a distant airbase, fly a raid on a port (preferably at night ) and then fly out again the next day. With a little luck all you'll lose are the 2 or 3 planes grounded for maintenance and some planes to FlAK. You do have to set up some IJNAF units to train int he ground attack role to make this possible but even fi you only have 2 squadrons dedicated to port attacks ( one with Netties, one with Graces ) it is well worth doing. You'll get more hits per plane/pilot lost than you ever will once the Allies put to sea.
I still build the D4Y4s for kamikaze attacks and for attacks on SC TFs containing BBs and CAs but, really, the B7A2's flexibility and serviceability makes it a better choice than the D4Y3 and D4Y4 for equipping your CVs. Of course the problem is that you HAVE to build something to equip your dive-bomber groups while waiting for the B7A2.

RE: Kill em all!
So, all previous 8-hex attacks were made only by TBs, because VALs had not range anyway?
Anyway, I am guessing there is somewhere in Technical Mission documents, detailed evaluation of JUDY. So it should be possible to find source.

Seriously, bombarding in jungle will not help you much. Use clear terrain Luke. Maybe strafing with larger caliber guns (Tojo IIb have 40mm, right?)? Although 4 Divisions will have lots of AA.ORIGINAL: PzB
I have already pasted this table somewhere here, but here it is again. Assisted take-off JUDY distance, was shorter, than JILL. But interesting numbers for unassisted. I am guessing RECCE means "with drop-tanks", and this adds 30 meters to distance.ORIGINAL: Erkki
D4Y1 had 200hp less power than the D2 used here so it'd seem that no range advantage above D3A is justified if it is to carry 500kg bomb as CV deck length will probably become issue. D2 with improved engine however improves power to weight ratio so much it shouldnt be a problem any more.
Anyway, I am guessing there is somewhere in Technical Mission documents, detailed evaluation of JUDY. So it should be possible to find source.

What is your source? BTW I went through my aviation literature yesterday and the D4Y performance values in various subtypes are pretty close to or precise wikipedia stuff. It looks like there are very few sources for Japanese hardware and some of them are contradicting each other, sometimes even themselves. For example I have 2 IMHO(otherwise) very creditable books that say Ki-61, Ki-100 and Ki-44 armaments in every sub-model are different to what they are in Witpae. Neither of them lists their own sources so what can we do... So much easier with the German stuff as online, there are 50+ Rechlin tests for both prototypes and production examples for everything at every altitude, temperature, flap and radiator position etc. [:D]
How much force is Andy using at Christmas? 6+ divisions? Couldnt he just bypass the whole place, isnt he just wasting preparation and LCU rebuilding time? Unless hes simply practicing amphibious ops first with a relatively easy target or something.
RE: Kill em all!
I don't think so. PzB had built up Christmas too strong (lvl 6 forts with 100,000 supply). Netties gave him a wide area that interdicted Andy's logisitic pipeline, plus it makes too effective of a sub replenishment base. He's either got to nuke the supply (like the allies were able to do to Truk IRL) to neuter it or take it. Andy must have decided he had to take it due to his timeline ... he's running out of time ...ORIGINAL: Erkki

RE: Kill em all!
Andy says Line Islands always has been a thorn in his side; spotting, disrupting, positioning raiders, subs etc.
So yes, he just can't bypass..! So let's see how much time and effort it takes to get rid of this place.
Christmas Island now got 44000 supplies left, should be plenty for this siege. It's a fine line how much to bring, if the place falls it's not funny
to give 50k supplies to enemy.
Seems like my faith in the Grace is well founded also in AE [&o]
This turn allied CAG again hits Christmas Island.
Heavy strikes against Moulmein with little effect.
We send in 2 sweep waves over enemy troops east of Moulmein, each time encountering small enemy CAP formations.
When our bombers go in they meet massive CAP [:(] We were saved by our expendable Oscars with rookie pilots that took the hits.
- Damage to enemy ground is noticable since they're in move mode, that's when we can hit them and both delay and hurt them.
Our Frances bombers at Port Blair hit another 2 merchantmen loaded with fuel.
I've decided on how to handle the enemy formations east of Moulmein; now reported as 5-6 units and 80k troops.
Identified 2 inf divisions, think there are 2 large armored units as well there.
I will build a powerfull force of our armored units west of Pisanlouke in the rough hex there and add as many support units as possible.
This leaves only one hex; the jungle hex SSE of Moulmein; here I need as many AA units and spare LCUs as possible. This is were Andy will go and his bombers will hurt us here.
We have to stand here and rotate fresh units in and try to weaken the enemy by holding, attacking both their troops and attacking into their flanks trying to disrupt supplies etc.
I'm moving in more HQs, both Army and Corpse level.
Just as the going may start to be tough our 2000 AV from Chiang Mai will arrive and I still have another 1000 AV in reserve in Malaya.
Our total AV strength should easily be 10k plus. We stand here!!

Need some help here; why doesn't my ac upgrade?
E.g. Tony Ic should update to Tony Id in 04/44 but 18 days in and with plenty supply - no upgrade.
Same issues with some Helen IIbs - hoped they would upgrade to Peggy but nope.
Again the same issue with the Jack, new version available but no upgrades.
Have been forced to take other non-important units with stopped production and converted them into producing these new types while I struggle to find out how to
upgrade without damaging all existing factories in a manual upgrade [&:]

RE: Kill em all!
Tony 1D - OK not sure why you want to produce these as the Frank is far better plane, but you're right ... it should upgrade. Get more supply at Gifu and Nagasaki (min 10K). There is a random roll to upgrade, but you should have already upgraded in Tokyo. I'd send Michael a save ... let him look at it.ORIGINAL: PzB

Helen does NOT upgrade to Peggy. You have to build new factories. I'm not a fan of Peggy. Only 75% of the bombload of a Helen. You have to expand your Ha-45 factories even more than you already are. Yes, the one Peggy does get a torp, but you need to train pilots in another skill. Peggy has more range than a Helen, but to what value? You have no escort with that range except Oscar, so its biggest value would be as a Night Bomber. however, the extra few hexes don't get me anywhere more than I can generally get with Helen. You'll need to look at some specific locations and make your own decision.
J2M2 -> J2M3 Same thought as the Tony ... I'd have Michael look at it.
Be sure to tell him which version of the Beta you are using. There have been minor hiccups with several that were fixed. I don't recall that upgrades was ever affected, but not sure. For example, the current beta q9b fixes several minor hiccups introduced in q8-q9 that were just found ( for example the inability to increase a zero size factory)

Hm, strange but ok....
Only want to upgrade some units to the Peggy (t).
The Tony d got better service rating and carries a 250kg bomb.
- Only advantages to this upgrade compared to the c with service rating 3 and no bombs.
Lots and more of the same bombing today, only showing a few select missions.
Starting to get tiresome!

Tony d SR 2 is nice, but they are so slow. Guess I need to pay more attention to your combat reports to see how they actually do. I'll also be watching to see how your PeggyT units go.

RE: Kill em all!
Tokyo Express in the Line Islands? Seems a smart choice, Christmas was key to the position last time and Andy seems to recognize this as well.
I think having taken the Line Islands was truly your big feat in this game, and provided the base for all other successes to follow. Threatening his Communications, hurting convoys, recon on his major forward bases on the Hawaii'an Islands... plenty of potential you have harvested. Ultimately it forced Andy to do a total of 3 major ops against these little fortresses, two of which turned into full-scale engagements. Of course there was a little luck involved, but ultimately the first of these battles, which was (if I recall correctly...) your first decisive CV clash, paved the way for further decisive CV battles and your later victory in the Timor Sea (Waingapoo). And even now, it remains a thorn in Andy's side, costs him time and valuable assets, and allows KB to sneak around and keep the Allied CVs tightly locked in its covering role in the immediate the area rather than to spread destruction. Who would have thought that these islands would have such a value?
And now the key question -- while your eyes are focused on Christmas and Moulmein, is there anything else suspicious happening elsewhere? Might Andy try something in the Solomon or DEI meanwhile know that KB is also busy?
