Dauntless and Avengers not attacking

My American carrier planes launch strikes, and even go to the attack screen when attacking ships, but the targets never appear and the game goes right to the combat report, which is of course empty. If I have a strike including, say B-25's, B-26's, and Dauntlesses, the combat report will show the number of B-25's and B-26's attacking and their altitudes, but nothing about the Dauntlesses. Am I doing something wrong?

Divebombers and torpedo bombers don't show up on the 'attacking planes' section as it only shows level bombers.
If torpedo bombers are attacking at extended range or against land targets then they will level bomb and appear on the screen.

That they take off and find nothing is possible, this can happen if what they were looking for can't be found - typically caused by a previous wave (the same turn) sinking the ships they were after.
