Aircraft Upgrades - Confusion

Post by Mr.Frag »

I am confused:

VF-3 & VF-42 (Lexington & Yorktown) start the game with F4F-3's (5/1/42)

Replacement schedule shows 0 for F4F-3 and 60 for F4F-4 (thats 2 a day correct?)

Into the game: (6/9/42)

Replacement schedule shows:

F4F-3 Used 9, Pool 0, Rate 0
F4F-4 Used 18, Pool 24, Rate 60

VF-3 has been upgraded to 36 F4F-4, VF-42 is still 16 F4F-3

VF-3 on Lexington started as 21 F4F-3
VF-42 on Yorktown started as 17 F4F-3

Thats 21+17=38 F4F-3

Losses show 22 F4F-3

38 at start - 16 left = 22 lost (correct!)

Replacement shows:

18 F4F-4 used yet I have 36 of them? What is the 9 used F4F-3? How can 9 be used when rate = 0? How come in over a month less then 60 got added to the pool (only 42)?

What else can you think of to confuse me more?

When a squadron upgrades aircraft those aircraft do not count in the used column. The used column just shows the aircraft your squadrons draw to replace losses or to bring them up to strength if they are undersized.

When a squadron upgrades to a new aircraft the old aircraft go back to the pool. Since your upgraded squadron sent it's -3's back to the pool it allowed your other squadron to pull them for replacements.

Hope this helps.

I am pretty far into it, and haven't seen the 3's come back yet. Those 2 squadrons are the only ones so far.

Is the upgrade based on the alloted a/c for the squadron or the number on hand?
Does a squadron have to be full strength to be upgraded.
I have a squadron of 12 P-400s and 20+ P-39s in the pool. This squadron has been sitting for about three weeks building up from 1 P-400.

Oh yea and what this with disbanded squardons returning in 60 days per the manual, I only see them back in 141 days.

I think I get you, but the numbers still don't add up for me.

If 18 4's were used (lets assume) to bring my squadron up to full strength of 36

18 3's were swapped for 18 4's then 18 4's pulled to fill

This means 18 3's were dumped into the pool?

hmm, perhaps only half value on trade-in aircraft? ie: I got 9 back for the 18 traded in? This the 9 used in the 3's column?

Squadrons upgrade at full strength so in the case of VF-42 it took 36 aircraft.

From May 1st to June 9th would produce 78 Wildcats since no aircraft are produced on day one.

36 for squadron upgrading
24 in pool
18 used
78 total

Now since your starting the scenario I'm betting Enterprise and Hornet are now incoming to Noumea and they will each take 9 F4F-4's to fill out their squadrons enroute to Noumea. This would account for the 18 used.

Once again I'm guessing here but since you show 22 F4F-3's lost and only 9 made it to the pool you lost these in combat/operational losses. Even with 9 being used VF-42 is still one fighter below its initial strength for a loss of ten planes. If you think VF-3 could have lost 12 planes before it was upgraded that would match the loss and pool numbers.
