RE: Za Rodinu Soviet AAR (No Axis)
Turn 28, STAVKA ORDERS
HEROES OF THE MOTHERLAND!
The fascist invaders are falling back in disarray before the valiant forces of the Workers and Peasants Red Army! In several places we have the enemy on the run in the open. This is good, he will take much heavier casualties from the cold then.
OVERALL
Continue attacking, and keep the enemy on the run! Do not batter against too heavy resistance though. Our HELD results were somewhat on the high side last turn. As usual, take command of any STAVKA units up to 7 hexes behind your front. Note that I have parked unready or depleted units in fort lines or along rivers behind our front. Do not move those. The idea is that they will prevent fort decay or dig. We will need some fortifications come summer, I am sure.
NORTH
You have the enemy on the run! Keep up the pressure! You have three cavalry divisions that you ought to combine into a corps.
CENTER
Attacks are continuing. Rzhev was liberated this turn, and Vyazma is coming up next!
SOUTH
Keep up the good work comrade Flam! The enemy is really being punished on your front! Keep up the pressure!
The STAVKA units in Eysk can be used for a naval assault if you want. There might be a possibility of cornering axis units against the sea!
Stalin. Shaposhnikov.

Not bad for a bunch of workers and peasants! No doubt they are sustained by ardor for the Motherland, and inspired by the leadership of the Great Comrade Stalin. A few shootings here and there doesn't hurt either.
Those shots show alot of attacks. They are choosing to stand and fight, which is a mistake. Looks like you are making them pay!
The offensive in front of V-V though should grind to a halt on the Valdai Hills; even with no trenches, a strong position.

Turn 28. The offensive is grinding forward! We had much better Retreat to Hold ratio than last turn! Losses from the Soviet turn:

Turn 29, STAVKA ORDERS
COMRADES!
Not much to say this turn except keep it up! It is now january, and we can expect the going to be a little tougher, so be a little more careful about attacking at low odds. Even if every Soviet citizen is prepared to die for the motherland, we don't want them to do so too uselessly.
Stalin. Shaposhnikov.

Attacks in the Western direction turn 29. A fascist grouping has been cut off northwest of Rzhev, and others are about to be encircled unless they retreat.

Turn 30, STAVKA ORDERS
COMRADES
Our victorious counter offensive is remorselessly grinding the enemy to dust! Put simply in the words of the common Soviet soldier: We are kicking some serious fascist ass! Keep up the pressure!
OVERALL
Continue attacking, but try to keep down the hold-results.
Try to preserve fort lines behind the front it possible. I have parked depleted units in some, and you can use airbaises and HQ to prevent fort decay. We will need those fortifications come summer!
When you have unready units in the front after an attack, try to pull them back one hex and refit if they have the MPs. They will recover much more quickly that way. Also think ahead and make sure you have units ready and close to the front for next turns attacks. We do not usually have MPs to move more than one or two hexes and still make a deliberate attack.

A German-Fascist division meets a well deserved fate in the woods northeast of Rzhev.

Tarhunnas, I don't know what version you're using, but on the latest patches the bug was fixed: air bases will not prevent fort decay anymore [:)]

Depleted units should still work though, even though they have a combat value of ZERO. They are still a "combat" unit.

In .40 they do not prevent fort decay. Cannot say for sure about .42 cause i still cant get teh patch .ORIGINAL: Q-Ball

*** edit *** In my Defense of the Reich 43+ AAR check post #3 and compare it to post #14, city of arad ... the fort started as a 2 and decayed to a zero with nothing but a depleted division in the hex.
Now that I think about it, that was on .39 exe so can't say for sure on .40

The quick fix from a programming perspective would be use ZOC/NO-ZOC as criteria since that attribute differentiates between combat and non-combat units and is already tracked.
In that case, depleted would not prevent decay.

Turn 32, STAVKA ORDERS
HEROES OF THE MOTHERLAND!
Our glorious winter offensive has shown the invaders what they can expect from the valiant defenders of the motherland in the Workers and Peasants Red Army! However, the going is now getting tougher and it is time to think ahead.
OVERALL
We are now nearing a point of diminishing returns on our attacks. Our losses are getting higher even if we are winning. Do not let that dissuade you from atacking, but be more careful with low odds attacks. We do not want to waste troops unnecessarily. However, do not be disheartened if our losses are twice those of the enemy, such losses are still in our favour in the long run.
Plan ahead for snow, when the Germans will be hitting us hard. Preserve existing fortifications and positon troops to start to build new ones. Construction will take lots of time in inclement weather.
NORTH
Here the enemy is weak and on the run! Keep up the pressure!
CENTER
Attacks are continuing. Vyazma is almost surrounded and will be liberated next turn. Otherwise, resistance is stiffening except to the north, where it might be possible to reach Velikie Luki.
SOUTH
Keep up the pressure, but be more carful with low odds attacks.
In the Crimea, do not stand around aimlessly. Push light forces forward to the north and south, and pull back the rest to fortify the choke point around Feodosiya.
Stalin. Shaposhnikov.

Turn 33, STAVKA ORDERS
OVERALL
It is still January, but in February, we can expect even tougher resistance. Keep attacking, but be careful about low odds attacks. This might be the last turn that we can hit them really hard however.
Plan ahead for snow, when the Germans will be hitting us. Preserve existing fortifications and position troops to start to build new ones. Construction will take lots of time in inclement weather.
When March comes, we need to have a three deep line south of Vyazma, and a two deep line north of that. If you have good fortifications you can plan on withdrawing a couple of hexes on the last turn of February. The fascists WILL hit us hard come March, and we must be prepared. Expect encirclements and all the evils of 1941, only smaller in scale. Plan to avoid them!
NORTH
The going is still good here! Continue to kick them around!
CENTER
Attacks are continuing. Vyazma is almost surrounded but the timetable for liberation has been pushed forward slightly. We are also at the doors of Orel and Kursk.
SOUTH
Keep up the pressure, but be carful with low odds attacks.
Repeat, In the Crimea, do something, but not stand around aimlessly in the middle of the peninsula! Push light forces forward to the north and south, and pull back the rest to fortify the choke point around Feodosiya. Stavka has placed a couple of FZs there to help with the fortifications.

Turn 34, STAVKA ORDERS
OVERALL
It is now February, and the going is definitely tougher. Ill-conceived atacks can easily run up staggering Soviet losses. Take it easy and start to prepare for March. Only do attacks where you have good odds.
I repeat, when March comes, we need to have a three deep line south of Vyazma, and a two deep line north of that. The fascists WILL hit us hard come March, and we must be prepared.
NORTH
You are coming up against the Valdai hills, which are good defensive terrain. Probably best to wind down the offensive, unless you find a really good attack.
CENTER
The Fascists abandoned Vyazma this turn! Otherwise, the resistance is definitely tougher, I had about 50% holds on my attacks, and those holds were expensive! Next turn I will be really selective what I attack.
SOUTH
There might be some opportunities for continued offensive action north of Kharkhov.
I expect the Germans will hit us hard in the South in March, so be prepared.
Stalin. Shaposhnikov.
