mecanoids and shakuri

how exactly do the mecanoids and shakuri work out? i had the impression that the universe was gana devide between good and evil. but the mecanoids seem to do near nothing wile shakuri trample everyone. is it just a super race that spawns then you have to kill them otherwise the game is completely normal? or is there more events and stuff that happens later?
