I actually haven't run into the Silvermist yet and was wondering... is there a diplomatic option to build a coalition against the obvious galactic level threat or are we limited to our MDP’s?

If we are limited to MDP’s, has anyone successfully used them to secure the help of their allies against the Silvermist?

Hmm... I've been thinking about my concept and have additional idea for my creature. What do you think about making Silvermist threat not to only intelligence races but to ALL organic life in Galaxy? How does it look like? Now, when Silvermist attacks a planet, creature makes it unusable for further colonization FOREVER. So, in the game attacked planet changes its TYPE and becomes BARREN.

Aye, that'd great. I mean it's not the same as say... Tyranids or Necrons or Replicators (not quite) but pretty much inbetween all of them in my mind at least. I myself thought no less thaneight hours ago that even I can't handle them in a game. Since then I have adjusted that position into - I can't handle them in the early stages of the game but at least I know it only takes size 500 ship to beat the first of them. And once the first of any batch is destroyed, no follow ups -> No danger of AI not handling them well. You just need to get there before the AI does which means a lot of research into certain fields and a lot of exploring to be done double quick.

Like the other space creatures, they don't show up in diplomatic options. They're just nastier than the other space creatures. [;)]

There should be a diplomatic option to form a coalition of many empires to exterminate SilverMist cotton balls.

My empire can't seem to exterminate them with 15 destroyers armed with Ion Cannons with 200 fire power per ship.  Now the cotton balls are multiplying to 15 of them and other empires are sending colonization and explorations ships.

Hmmm, they are creatures but they are also an "event". "Events" should trigger diplomatic options... especially events that impact the entire galaxy.

Oh well... guess I'll be researching ion weapons! [:D] Still loving this game!

Do shields help against them?

@nammafia: Do you play 1.703? I think there was a bug in the 1.7 making ion cannons useless against the silvermist (could be mistaken, thou).

But be careful with 1.703, there is a bug that you can not control your ships/fleets anymore once in a system with enemies.

No shields are useless in the Silvermist battle! As are armor... just one more thing they need to eat first!

@Locarnus,

I am using 1701. I also notice that the ships in the fleet are not working together --> easily eaten by the cotton balls. I beef up the ships with ~300 shield and ~180 armor. This is my silvermist killing fleet armed with only Ion Cannons.

So you will lose ships, you just have to have enough ships to kill the silvermist before they are all eaten.

Yeah, there's no real effective ship defense against them. If they reach one of your ships, it's gone in a couple seconds. Better to have a lot of smaller ships than a few big ones, and load them up with ion cannons while skipping armour and shields.

They seem to have two speeds. When you first spot one it'll be at 'wandering' speed, which is about comparable to a ship's speed. But when they get close, they seem to sniff that your ship is near and increase to full speed. In that mode, they're very fast. They can close the distance to a ship in 2-3 seconds, and then another 2-3 seconds to eat it.

And the biggest individual SilverMist I've seen so far had around 3200 health, so you can imagine how many shots it'll take to kill it.

I will try your suggestion about no shield nor armor ships. This is actually fun. Though I must say we, the players, should be able to mod the image for Silvermist. The cotton ball looking image does nothing to reflect the danger these things are.

Actually shields are useless yes, but armor isn't completely so, although main effect of it is to be the thing gone first. The minimum I've seen to be able to defeat mists with one ship not damaging anything else than armor has been ion cannons 220 power with armor rating of 250. IIRC minimum armor to stay alive but nearly destroyed was ion cannons 220 and armor rating of 150. So you need a lot of stopping power and armor to do it. Another option is to build a ship with cruise speed of 55 (since the sprint speed is not guaranteed to be going on in combat situations (I haven't tried the mobility way yet with the mists).

So basically the boffins are proposing either a fleet of super fast small ion cannon ships, one of slow suicide-mission ships, or an armor encased space monitor that destroys the mists before they can finish eating through the armor to the vitals.

Cooler and cooler. Is there some force field technology that allows them to be contained and kept as pets by evil galactic emperors?

Having it get loose and devour the planet while the Imperial escape shuttle darts away just in time is part of the fun.
