Work in Progress: Mini-Campaign Series

Post by GaryChildress »

Currently working on a mini-campaign series. 1st installment: Invasion of Poland in 4 scenarios. Once I release the Poland series, I'll start work on a sequel for Scandinavia, probably another 4 scenarios. I'm going to try my hand at importing core units and try to get that to work.

Database changes:

1. Increased vehicle movement ranges by 1 for every vehicle. Left infantry movement at default. This effectively makes mobile warfare a little more mobile and infantry play catchup in their trucks until you get halftracks. I didn't fool with the combat stats of tanks and infantry as planned, so adding 1 to mobility will be my way of making vehicles a little more valuable.

2. Fighter bombers now have a spotting range of 3 to represent photo-recon. (note: only fighter/bombers have this ability)

3. Deleted all the current SE units and added AA, AT, and Recon as SE units. Basically your auxiliary units are bonus units. You start out the first scenario with one or two SE units. These units are freebies and don't take up core slots, so there's every incentive to have them in every scenario. SE units won't be awarded randomly but rather I intend to create deliberate triggers so that if you do well, you'll earn extra SE units.

Other features: This mod will be a struggle to keep your army up to date and fully repaired. Prestiege points aren't as plentiful so you'll need to make some tough decisions and sacrifices to keep your battlegroup in readiness. You'll be working on a shoestring budget most of the time. So don't be surprised if you need to keep a few of those Panzer Is a little longer than their recommended service life.

Here's a tentative outline of my project:

Thanks nikivdd! Hopefully part 1 will be ready soon. I'm in playtest stage right now. [:)]

Also all maps will be originals done by me. I'm using google Earth at "5 mile" resolution to make most of my pad images. Also using the West Point Atlas of WWII for reference. Still a lot of improvisation but there will be some RL basis for them. All in all, the most fun I've had in a while! [8D]

The pad image is probably one of the most amazing tools I've ever seen a map editor have. Without it, I doubt I'd ever be able to make such geographically accurate maps. It has its downfalls though. Not the pad image, but using google Earth. It's a nasty surprise to learn that entire rivers and lakes that exist today didn't exist in the 1940s. Not to mention all the names of everything heh.

Getting maps from the mid 40s isn't impossible, but they aren't nearly as well detailed or easily fitted into the pad image function.

Good luck on your project, I hope many more modders take advantage of the system to produce a nice and steady stream of content. Good for the players and modders too, as oversized projects have a nasty habit of being left unfinished if they take months to produce.

Latest news: The first mini campaign will be delayed while I re-evaluate the 4 scenarios and the unit database. I'm thinking I may make some changes. I'm again considering nerfing infantry's ground defense values and beef up their close defense. This time either with a corresponding increase in tank cost or else a decrease in infantry cost. I may also add an Infantry '41 and Infantry '45 series to help infantry keep up with changes in armored warfare.
