Thinking of buying...

Post by army_MatrixForum »

Hey there.

Well thinking of getting this or Command Opps: Battle from the Bulge or Gary Grigsby's War in The East.

Man...I suppose what I want from you guys are some opinions on these three games against each other. I love all three theaters of war and I like the look of all three games.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know anything about Command Ops and very little about War in the East, but I can't imagine a more immersive and all-consuming game than this one. If depth and richness interest you, and if you don't mind a game becoming an important part of your life for at least a few years, perhaps as many as ten to twenty, then this is the game for you. If you're looking for less of a time commitment and lifestyle, War in the East may suit you better.

If you want to get a feel for just how amazing this game is, go to the AAR page and read the past month of GreyJoy's AAR. Wow!

Thanks for your reply Canoerebel!

I have to admit, the idea of coming home from work and spending an hour or so each night on a game like this...well it does sound appealing. I know there is a lets play on Youtube, but I just wish there was more vids that provided a all over review...now I mean REVIEW, not a critique (which is what IGN etc provide). Don't want a score out of 10, just want a ton of info on the game its self.

I shall continue to read around. But please, people, please reply and give me some feedback and info on the game. Things that you like about it.

Cheers.

Hey army, I own Conquest of the Aegean (which is similar to BftB), WitP/AE and WitE. I must say that all are great games.

WitP is a very in depth game that can totally suck you into it. Its definitely not a beer and pretzels game. You have complete control over the entire Pacific theater...WOW! The only thing I don't like about WitP is it takes literately years, yes years, to play a person in a regular full war campaign and burn out it possible [:(]. The AI is ahhh, but what AI's aren't. The support of the game has been great over the years, as with most Matrix game.

WitE is more in the middle of the three. Its got a decent AI and very playable with people, only a 1/2 to 3/4 a year for a full blown campaign game. Its not as deep as WitP but its got enough meat to it that it should keep you going for a while. [;)]

As for your Battles of the Bulge, I own CotA which is sorta predecessor to it. Its a tactical game that offers real time simulation of battles and the FOW that goes with it. I found that the game can get old and it becomes less and less interesting watching your units zoom around doing there thing.

If I where to buy one now I sincerely think that I would go with WitE. Its just a more manageable scale of a game that keeps you interested in it enough to get somewhere and to see results over a weeks worth of time instead of a month.

I now have to schedule my evenings around my PBEM turn (WIPTAE). It's not as bad as world of warcraft RE addictions- you will have time to eat, sleep, see significant other while your opponent is doing the turn. [:D]

I have to disagree with the esteemed CarnageINC just a bit here: the AI is a bit "ahhh" only after you have learned the game and played it a number times. The AI is good enough to humble a beginner for the first six to twelve months of the war. Only after you begin to master the game does the AI begin to seem a bit retarded and repetitive. And since the scale is daily turns at really nice, detailed level this means that if you only play seven months into the game a couple of times as the Japanese and then as the Allies you have processed about 800 turns, learned the mechanics of the game thoroughly and probably said more than a few nasty words about the sneaky AI. After that it's time to hunt up a human opponent. Great game. Also an incredible bargain: I think that I am running well below one cent per hour of gaming pleasure.

I love all three theaters of war

This reminds me... I think this is generally assumed when you ask about Matrix wargames, i.e. that you are very familiar with the theaters involved.

Would you recommend WITP AE for someone who is interested in the Pacific theater, but it not very familiar with it? Can it be a fun experience, with some amount of success in battle, if you are early on the learning curve of the theater?

I imagine a smaller game like Battle from the Bulge would be easier to get into with less knowledge of the theater, but something big like WITE and WITP sound like (deep) experience is pretty much required to enjoy it.

I haven't play WITP E. But I will say this game is worth it. I would buy it again.

Sarconix, I didn't know much about the Pacific AO when I bought this game. I am learning so much about both. The game and people on the forum make sure you learn both. Now is a good time to get in. I've been here for a yr now and I'm seeing alot of new people around.

The AI is ok. It will give you a run for your money if your new. But PBEM is great loving my game.

Good luck in your choice, to both of you.

I think the reason why I am unsure is because the scale of the game seems so huge. I will have to think on it. Thanks for the feedback so far folks :)

My wonderful wife bought me War in the East for Christmas. As mentioned in this thread, it has a large map with high unit count; but a much faster tempo than WitP AE. As much as I would love to play WitE, AE has hooked me badly, and takes up all my game time. It does take time, effort and patience to learn - and the curve is steep; but the level of detail, challenge and thrill is second to none.

You will enjoy either Matrix product - the support for both is outstanding. I do hope that you will join us!

Hi, Sarconix!

She has a lot of patience; I am fortunate to have her in my life. I do visit my family regularly, often joining them for dinner and dishes... <grin>

My wife is annoyed with me at the moment because I wont tell her what I want for Christmas :) I would rather her get something and make it a surprise than have me tell her what to get me.

Having said that...I am taking the plunge and I am going to get WITP:AE. I am not too bright though, so expect lots of posts from me on how to play this game.

Thank you all very much for your feedback and suggestions.

Thank you very much N014. Tell you what, these forums will take some getting used to. I used to play (looks left and right)......wow. The forums there and in League of Legends are toxic to say the least.

Only just installed the game and it is 10:30pm here....time for bed. Pitty. I really want to start playing.

Thanks folks.

Interesting enough, I played (though still play on the side) both WOW and LOL. This is why I am worried my attention span won't work for WITP:AE...
