This game or War Plan Orange?

Post by Blubel »

Hi,

with the sale I'm thinking about buying this game or WPO and need some help in dicision making.
I like naval warfare and the Pacific Theatre. However I don't like aircraft that much. They just should not sink major warships...
So on the one hand WPO would fit the bill perfectly.
On the other hand it's older and seems to be less polished then WitP:AE.

So basically my question is: Are (of the 15 stock or custom made scenarios) there any good working scenarios with a WPO setting for WitP:AE?

I bought both WPO and WitP-AE at the same time. I fiddled with WPO a bit, then fiddled with WitP and got sucked in. That was two years ago and I haven't played WPO since. For my money, WitP is the better bet.

WPO is fine if you play the smaller scenarios. But it is not supported anymore and there really are very few guys playing it. So you won't get your questions answered, won't find many opponents and will get very lonely. I got about a year and a half into a campaign with my long term opponent Stefan but we just eventually got bored with it. Too many days where nothing happened.

Get AE. It is a no brainer.

I'd say AE. I bought WPO more as a means of supporting Matrix (and encouraging WITP2) but found it waaay too slow.

I have both - the only reason to get WPO is if you're really interested in the specific subject matter of carrier-less battleship duels. Otherwise, WITP-AE is pretty superior on many fronts.

My attraction to WPO is the ability to play a "pure" Naval War without all those stinkin' aero planes messin' things up. [:)]

Downsides have been well coverered. The WPO forum has had very little activity for many months and hence you would be "on your own". The AI is also not nearly as interesting, so unless you plan to play mostly PBEM, your replay value will be low.

As to whether anyone has done a WPO scenario for AE, I'm not sure. I think I've seen some posts about one, but just not sure. Check in the AAR section and see if you can see any mention in there.

WPO was the first game in the War in the Pacific trilogy that I acquired back in 2005 and then moved on to WitP, then finally onto AE when it was released. Even though WPO is still a great game, it does not compare with the grand campaign in AE, but that's only what I think. [;)]

WPO has no AI to speak of, so that right there would be a gamebreaker for a lot of people.

I have both, and AE is much better both AI and game mechanics wise.

You can always create scenario to your liking for AE.
