Turn 5, 7/17/1941

AGN

The Soviets are probably long aware that we are not going for Leningrad. Our motorized division will probably be isolated next turn, but with infantry at the front I think we've just unlocked the swamp nightmare from Velikie Luki north to Lake Ilmen.

The second panzer corps is resting further south with AGC. The railhead can be seen at the western edge of the screenshot.

AGC

Several panzers corps take a rest as the infantry is finally at the front. He is weak to the south, so a panzer corps (wholly out of fuel) is sent that way. There is the potential for a massive buildup next week.

Again the railhead can be seen to the west.

No rest for the panzers. Railheads are far far behind. Infantry will force a bridgehead across the river near Kiev next turn.

If your Mot Divs are not isolated, and if you can get them a sufficient distance from the enemy I believe you can disband them and magically harvest thousands of trucks - totally worth it. Beats surrender. here comes the"Modified almost pocket no units can disband Lvov strategy" :)
ORIGINAL: Flaviusx

A delayed Lvov pocket via an early strike towards Proskorov is a perfectly reasonable alternative. The Sovs aren't getting out either way.

Disband divisions? I have no idea what you are talking about.

I was really commenting on what a Russsian can do to save vital equipment if in a non-isolated state, and sufficiently far from an Axis unit. Sort of a pro and con of pocketing vs spearheads.

Right click on the unit counter, bottom right in the window that opens is a "Disband Unit" option if you are far enough away from the enemy. It is most commonly used to bin Russian Motorcycle Regiments, but if you are handed the tactical and geographic opportunity to save thousands of trucks for 1 AP many go for it.

Turn 6, 7/24/1941

AGN

Going for pockets, some of which will have to be re-established next week. At least recon cannot find anything resembling a second line further east.

Heavy resistance on the straight path to Moscow of course. No buildups used as the panzers head north and south.

Supplies are a problem, but things are going fairly well. South side of the river is mostly captured, and we're sending one panzer corps across at Kiev to create a squeeze on the river defenders.

Slovakians, Hungarians and Romanians are still struggling with the last bits of the Lvov pocket.

Securing the bridgehead while panzer corps goes on buildup. To the east the other panzers keep clearing a path for infantry.

Losses? One effect of not sealing the Lvov pocket is that the units in the (non-)pocket can receive replacements during turn 1. Can this effect be noticed?
