Guardian Expansion

Post by Bison36 »

I'm sure it's WAD, but the mine/research expansion of the Guardians is frustrating. It seems that once the Guardians are revealed their expansion of mines/research stations seem to occupy every very rare resource and tech/weapon/research site. Nor does there seem to be a limit to the range they will occupy these sites. I like the idea of the galactic struggle with the Skahturi, but the latest game I started I unchecked the RotS storyline. I did this simply because of the Guardian expansion. It's not that I want all the site to myself, but it also seems that it would have a negative impact on the AI civilizations.

Is the Guardian expansion WAD? What is the designer logic behind this style of expansion?

I totally understand your frustration Bison, I regularly used the game editor to remove guardian research stations after I realised they had occupied EVERY research bonus location that I discovered.

I focus a lot on research so if I see an unexplored neutron star/black hole/supernova I will prioritise my explorers to investigate these areas first. Even in the early game the guardians have dominated these locations though.

In my current game, this is making me want to enslave them. Can that be done? Gonna have to find out.

Yes you can takeover the Guardians, but it will be a tough fight, don't forget they got max. techs.
But when you manage to take their homeplanet your Income will raise about more of the double.

About mining stations at rare resources, just destroy them fast with a small strong fleet, but get some good reputation with them before so they arn't war at you soon.
If it is a planet just try to invade it (safe before, not sure if this change into war now).
But you still can cheat like Webbco delete these bases with the editor, but you can disable that storyline before you start a game too.

I attacked them once...game ended shortly there after. If you attack them, I suggest late game when your tech level is high.

Sometimes i wish to grasp my hands on World Annihilator and blast the guardians out of this galaxy. Can you actually annihilate guardian homeworld? Like any other colony with a single shot. :)

It seems counter intuitive too, that a max tech race would want to keep researching

Do the Guardians appear if you turn off the story elements when you create the game?

my understanding was that they were ROTS events that can be unchecked to not happen at universe generation.

I think Erik Rutins said they are high tech but still have some researching to do.
