OK Mr Bill what did you put in this one, downloaded both hard and easy, then decided
to put a gun to my head and start the hard version first, unzipped to camp. directory ok. started ok, picked my core fores, then deployed them set artillary as usual, them started ok. Then russian turn went south, got "unable to allocate memory for vcr recording" in window saw very little russian movement.
Retryed other camp. and they worked ok? will down load and try again, God help me for doing it. I must like getting blown up, run over and bayoneted. God I love SPWAW.

I have been getting that lack of memory message every now and again with the hard version of the campaign. Here is something I do not understand - after I quit SPWAW the machine claims to only have 32MB RAM under the SYSTEM control panel, but running MEM in a dos box reports the correct 64MB. Mighty strange...

Just got a DV in battle 2 of the hard (19743/2848), but that was after several attempts and some slightly suspicious use of some paras to grab one of the further hexes early in the game. I should retire now and die happy.

I've never seen this memory problem. Send me your last save before you get this message and let me see if it happens to me.

How much memory do you guys have on your machines. Mine is 128...WB

Haven't started "Victors" but have been getting the memory message since loading V4.5.

I'm running a AMD Thunderbird 700 with 256MB of PC133 and a 20GB HD.

I tried setting the swap file to 1GB but still got the same message (reverted to letting the system manage the swap file).

Re the VCR memory problem:

Before start of play today I deleted the current Steel.prf file.

Result: No sign of the VCR memory message.

It may just be coincidence - so could others having the problem try it and see.

NB: The fact that WB says that he regularly deletes the steel.prf file may explain why he doesn't suffer the problem.

I only noticed this message now.
WOW!!! Sound like fun! I have to start downloading them.

This campaign reminds me about a test I made some time ago. I played as a German delay against Russians (June, 1944). I used 1000 points for Germany and gave n*1000 points for the Russians. I tried to increase n as high as I could and still win (at least marginally). I tried couple of times at end up at n=6 (or 5, can't remember) (I ended after the first loss(n=7?), so it might be possible to get higher n too). I didn't use any mines.

It was a hard fight and I noticed same as some of you mentioned here - if the enemy has a lot more troops (especially tanks), buy a lot of infantry (with good AT capability) or you are in trouble. This is a good tactic if you are defending.

Infantry is definitely the way to go. Got a decisive victory in the second battle using mainly mechanized infantry. Tends to incurs heavy losses, but they are a lot cheaper to replace than tanks.

Yup, infantry seems to be doing the job for me too. 2 companies of rifles, some HTs to carry them, 2 mech engineer platoons, a couple of recon squads, lots of AT teams, an FO and six or seven scout+s. Score so far: draw/dv/dv/dv... but this next one looks really nasty.
I think up against tanks infantry are the best bet - the currently hotly debated topic of close assault shows this to be widely held. Also compared to AFVs they have greater longevity, they are much less likely to be knocked out by one lucky shot. Lots of smoke also pretty much doubles their strength... set them up in ambush and wait for the AI to stroll down that road.
Is any one having any success in the hard version with an AFV based core force, or does it all come down to paper/scissors/stone?

Thanks Bill for a tough fight. I REALLY do not like the look of the aerial assault that has just come up.

My core force was a 2 tank squads + one squad of recon and one mechanised infantry sqd.Infantry was just auxilary.First 3 battles was a marginal.
I scored a marginal victory for hard ver. campaign.Thiw was the most hardest fighting i ever played.I had big loses. Most difficuilt was tank duel betveen M26 Pershing and T-34/85.Yes M26 has better gun but tront turret of T-34/85 is sloped and turret of M26 not.(is this realistic?)

You managed it with a tank core - I am mighty impressed. Any tanks I brought with support points or in earlier attempts just didn't go the distance. I think you owe us a couple of tactical hints and tips. Myself I finally finished the campaign - one draw (first battle) and the rest DV (BUT, I had played the second battle several times and got my tail whipped rightly, and in one of the later battles (the aerial assault) I did replay 2 turns when I realised I had made a serious tactical error). So repitition and infantry by the shipload got me through in the end, but as I say doing it with an AFV core - that is impressive.
