RE: Blood in the skies

Post by GreyJoy »

hahaahh[:D][:D][:D]

No, she's an angel...despite she got pissed like hell, i used all my rethoric (sp!?) art to get out of that swamp pretty well....yesterday night i went to another "good" christmas dinner and went home too tired and too late to update...today i got one of my worst working days ever with 14 and half hours in a row of constant typing[:-][:-][:-][>:][>:][>:]...

However, here i am once again my friends! :)

June 12, 13 1944

KB finally came up...and attacked (with 80 bombers) a lone xAK which was moving from Panama to PH...so the dreaded KB is there uh!?[;)]
Another Carrier division attacked a lone DD near Perth (i guess only 1 CV present here).

My CVs are moving back to PH just in case...but i think the Kb will move away asap. No problem tough...as long as she doesn't threaten my convoy routes i'm happy with this positioning.
My convoys reached Hokkaido safely and we're now ready for the next phase.

Under a costant CAP by my CVEs a minor landing occurred at Ketoi-Jima. Our 2Es made a great job dealing with the strong garrison present there (a full regiment, backed up by a SNLF) and our landing amphib composition (which was the best possible one) did the rest. only APA/AKA, LCI, LGI and ACGs.
We landed an Indian Bde fully prepped along with 2 Tank Bn and one marine rgt not prepped....the difference was absymal!!!
Anyway...in one single phase we got down along with 80k supplies[X(]
Tomorrow we'll attack and i'm pretty sure we'll conquer the base.
Then it will be time for Onnekotan and Paramushiro.

Our 4es were supposed to attack Maebashi for the second time but 2 days of storm didn't allow to do so...

In northern Honshu enemy troops are flowing in a sensible manner....every day the northern garrisons grow in number and strenght....will be damned bloody!

In NG we managed to break his perimeter around Salamua and the II AUS Corp (27th US DIV and 3rd AUS Div) entered into the base hex defended by 46k japs but so isolating the enemy 16th Army (5th div and 2 Rgts)which was contesting to my I AUS Corp the hex northeast of Buna[;)]

No screenshots this time...sorry

Here's the Kb position...

Could it be a trap ? Could it be that it's only a couple of minor CVs trying to get my CVs there in order to savage my transports near Hokkaido or my Convoys in the Aleutinas??

mmmmm.....

The worst possible turn....

My fighters decided once in a while to coordinate with themselfs.... BUT they swept AFTER my bombers!

The poor bastards arrived over Maebashi without any cover and got slaughtered.... i guess more than 200 4Es got destroyed in 2 days... that's months of production gone for good in a single shot!!!...this will put a serious dent on my strat bombing campaign....[:o][:o][:o][:o][:o][:o]

Oh, and yes, it's the KB near Hawaii...you know what? it's 1944...3 torps into Akagi....NO EXPLOSION!!!!!!

FRACK!!!!!!...says Lt.Starbucks

What should i do now?...i cannot go on anymore with my strat bombing campaign....og Good Lord

Ok, a stiff reaction it's what i need.
Time to put back my 4Es squadrons and start to use the 100 Fortress i have by now. In one weeks we should be able to have 150 B-29 operative.
I'll invest my best crews in them and switch to training groups most of my liberators squadrons...

A damned ugly bad turn if you ask me....

Those Kamikazes in the Solomons really scared me.... at Panggoe 30 of them arrived at 44k feet....and none of my fighters was able to catch them....[:-]

Ser Greyjoy...at least you know where Akagi is...and where Akagi is, usually means that at least a large number of his CVs are too. Yes, it could be a trap just to draw you far away from the real action in N Japan, but I think not. Me thinks he is trying to intercept large troop movements from the US, while avoiding tripping over your very formitable CV force. I doubt an invasion of Hawaii is feasible, but just maybe.

Just how did you happen to have a sub in that area? That alone was fortunate. Was it just in transit to PH and happened to be in the right place, at the right time, with the wrong torpedos....geez. Definite downer.

About the party attire....well, very medival of you. I did not know the codpiece was back in style:). I'm sure the girls were all atwitter.

Why split your forces?

Better to go back in with all your Libs & the fortresses instead of one or the other.

The bigger the hammer you hit him with the lower your proportionate losses will be.

Same reason you're better off with one big coordinated strike rather than a mess of smaller ones.

Agree. If you need to stand down some bombers as training groups, use the 2Es. Keep all the 4Es working hard!

Bad luck with the torpedoes there. I would be willing to guess that most of the KB is around the same place searching for troop convoys. If you think that the carriers are out of position, is it possible to quickly put together invasions of Sadogashima and the other two island bases in the Sea of Japan, Okishoto and Illeungodo (spelling?). Even if the troops have to go in with a low preparation it is surely an opportunity to get more allied fighters closer to the Japanese fighter factories. Importantly, sweeping fighters from the bases closer to the enemy factories will likely arrive before the bombers from the more distant bases. Sure, losses for the transports will likely be horrible but this looks to be a golden opportunity.

i think i concur with yubari, a suicide invasion of that little island in the sea of japan despite a very high cost in possibly transports or even putting your surface fleet / carriers at risk, would be worth it to get an airbase taht close to the jap homeland

An invasion of Sadogashima now is out of question. The base is well defended and i cannot arrange a decent landing force distracting units from their prepped destinations. His air forces are still so strong that it would be a disaster imho...you don't have just to conquer the base. Then you need to keep it open and resupplied...

No, sorry but i'll stick to the original plan for now. Finish the conquest of the Kuriles, thus securing my flanks and getting ready for the Honshu invasion.

Plus my CVs are out of position too...being looking for the KB... which disappeared again in the shades....however she still is far away from home...and Bolton: no, wasn't luck. I have several subs guarding the approaches between Christmas and PH...when i sniffed the KB there i simply enlarged the perimeters of their searchs...

Do you like Codpieces? [:D] I have other interesting pics taken from the other night but i'm sure you don't wanna see the penguin awaken[:D]

My divide my 4E forces? well, i don't wanna divide them but my Liberators suffered so much that i need to make some of those squadrons to rest and rebuild(many of them have only 1 or 2 planes with 4 or 5 pilots left[:o]...and i have no pools to fill the gaps in my lines...)

Anyway now i'm still re-organizing...for some days we'll just have sweep missions over japan....

Jun 16, 17 1944

Today, finally, after several suicide missions, CA Sussex - meant to withdraw 10 days ago, has been torpedoed near Aika and now is ready to go beneath the waves.
The mission costed to Japan several Peggy-Ts with good crews and the pround british ship has done enough damage to Aikia port facilities in the last 2 weeks to be ready to be disbanded and sunk without tears[:)]

Our P-47s swept Maebashi again, obtaining a very good score.

DD raid near Perth costed me 4 xAKs...nothing more and nothing to be worried about.

Starting to load at uruppu Jiima the amphib landing force for onnekotan and Paramushiro...that are being softened by our BBs and 2Es in the meanwhile.

keijo-jima garrison has already completely been wiped out. Fast and Clean[8D]

GreyJoy, pardon me for offering advice to my favorite prodigy, but I wanted to mention another possibility.

You have the position from which to reduce Japanese industry in the northern half of Honshu, and have already gone a long way towards accomplishing that.

To put yourself in a position to reduce the southern half, you could take Formosa (and possibly Okinawa). Doing that would, of course, sever Honshu from the DEI and would almost certainly result in a titanic carrier engagement - one that would cost you some ships, but which would (again, almost certainly) be an Allied victory. It would also prevent rader from bringing units back to Honshu by sea from the south, though by the time you could orchestrate such a move he would have had lots of time already.

Were the dominoes to fall in such fashion, rader's surrender would almost certainly come in short order.

There is something rather magical about successfully invading Honshu. That will succeed, I think, but it will likely end up being pretty slow going. The idea I've just offered might offer an alternative route to victory - one that rader might not expect.

I am begining to think that the game mechanics [an emphasis on incoordination for large bomber/fighter formations]] , Home rules that greatly influence the optimum use of bombing, and a strict historical OOB vs. a very ahistorical scenario -- mid-44 4E attacks against the IJ strength might not be the panacea that at least I orginally thought. The game mechanics is the most interesting factor that one must look at this situation differently than real life. It seems the fighters typically sweep after the bombers more times than not. Though most likely the opposite would be true. It is just a game mechanic and it just is ... a great lesson for a newbie like myself .. I do wonder if waiting for B-29's and then coming with the full on the 4E's is not a better solution?

Then again GreyJoy has shut down most if not all of the future high speed aircraft production and will be facing inferior fighters with much more superior fighters in '45.

The three torps not exploding are ! P(.20) * !P(.20) * !P(.20) or 0.008 or less than 1% chance of that occuring if these die rolls are truly random ... what bad luck! That is less likely than the worse bad beat you see on ESPN and the World Series of Poker!

I am enjoying the read GreyJoy ...

Intersting input about the odds, Crackaces.  And you're right about the coordination situation.

GJ, I must pause once again to publicly admire the majesty of Suddenly Hairy.  Wow.  It's June 1944 and you've laid waste to many of Japan's best future fighter industry.  Wow.  Just...wow.

CR, i do think that an invasion of Formosa or Okinawa now would mean give Rader another chance to turn the tables back again. That would be a massive risky operation, with a lot of question marks in its very basis.
I now almost nothing about his dispositions there and i'll be facing a combined threat by several 9 lvl AFs and surely KB...secondly i won't be able to arrive there unseen...Rader will have all the time to get ready and to welcome me...
No, i see the strategical opportunity you're underlining here and i agree that the war will be ending much faster once Japan was cut off by his oil routes...but i simply think that, considering the present strategical situation we're in, the prize isn't worth the risk.

About the air combat system...well, consider that we've done already at least 20 strat bombing missions over the skies of Japan...and only this one went so awful...so i think this is just a case of particularly bad dice and rolls...nothing more.

And Rader's a/c production is far from being destroyed...there are still several factories R&Ring Shindens, Sams, KI-83s, KI-201s and several other speed-master fighters....we need to carry on with our task.

In a week we'll have available 140 B-29s and some 200 B-24s....that means the equivalent of 600 B24s.... our strenght in terms of bombload hasn't been destroyed...not yet!

The other advantage of invading northern Honshu is that there aren't actually that many Japanese air bases in very close proximity - meaning those can be shut down. And you will be fighting in range of your 2E bombers - which will absolutely massacre any force out in the open. Obviously he will have lots of forts and forces in theater, but unless he can kick you out immediately, you should prevail relatively quickly - just look at how quickly you tore apart 10 divisions on Hokkaido.

This is where the two day turns come in handy, as he won't be able to counter-attack in force until two days after your landing - meaning you should get lots of forces onto the beach, and they should already have recovered a lot of any disruption incurred while landing.
