Soviet Super Unit

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

Soviet Super Unit

Post by Mentor »

Check out the monster 34th Guards Rifle Corps in the attached picture. Are such massive units to be expected as the war wears on? This beast was mauling my infantry divisions until I cut him off and created my own "mini Kiev pocket in a hex". The Soviet soldiers must have been stacked to the rafters in the hex.

Over 300k men in that one Corps unit? Sounds like a problem to me, since I don't think the TOE of the units, even if it included attached SUs would normally allow the unit to get so bloated.

I can't imagine how you'd get that many men in one unit. If you've got a save before the attack, please send it to 2by3@2by3games.com or post it here. Thanks. What version of the game was this one started with, and what version are you using now?

I'll post a save shortly.  This is the same game that I reported the entire southern map has been denuded of Soviet units.  Apparently to stock this one corps. :)  It is against the AI, started in 1.04 (final subversion prior to 1.05) and upgraded as the 1.05 betas were made available.

The destruction of 320k enemy in one battle was nice, and the result of the air combat in this battle was gravy.  Not bad for March '43.

That would be off by, oh, a factor of 10 or so. Looks like somebody slipped a decimal point here...

Weird result.

To elaborate, the AI sometimes gets these massive units whenever it creates Rifle Corps for the first time, but the TOEs should stabilize after a while. I distinctly recall a similar case reported a few months ago.

Look at the CV, it's only ~13, reasonable for 1 corps, so this could be the kind of combat result glitch Pavel sometimes talks about, or could be due to something else. Still, the CV is normal.

Actually, it's CV only dropped to 12 after it was surrounded. The screenshot I posted was following its destruction and is a bit misleading. IIRC, the attack CV of the free unit was displayed in the 40s or 50s.

For what it is worth, I came across another instance in my game.  Two surrounded regular Soviet rifle divisions had ~150k men between the two of them, and ~2500 guns.

Very odd.

It is March '43 and the Axis now has about the same # of men in the OOB as the Soviets and I am pocketing 100k - 200k more per week.  I'm starting to wonder (perhaps too optimitically) whether I have beaten the AI and these monster units are a manifestation of her death throes.

Ah, I thought the unit had air supply or the like, but if that was the CV post-pocket, something seems to be wrong indeed.

Here is a screenshot of the beast before it was cut off and popped like a pimple. I think you will understand why I felt that an entire panzer army plus 2 inf corps were assigned to do the job.
