Retreat losses (Artillery)

Post by Magnno44 »

I would like to follow up MikeB's poll with another one.

I get the feeling that the loss of artillery for the side playing a defensive battle is way too high. What do you think. Decrease the amount of artillery losses due to retreats (not shatter)?

CLARIFICATION: I do understand that many artillery peices are lost due to uncontrolled retreats but an army/ corps under a regular one-hex retreat should not loose that many peices as in v3.2. Playing a defensive battle (1941 for the Russian) and 1943-45 for the germans assuming a historical development of the battle, a 1 year + defensive battle drains an army of much of its artillery sources due to retreats.

Retreat vs Combat

Post by MikeB »

I might agree that the combat results of Defender loosing a lot of artillery vs the attacker seems odd. I am in favour of a defender losing lots of artillery if the defender retreats. The ratio of defender losing artillery vs attacker losing artillery seems extreme in normal combat with no retreats.

What really bothers me is the accuracy of counter-battery firing in arty bombardment missions...
It's not in the least bit amusing when I fire at a Corps which has just moved and destroy 10 arty pieces and kill, say, 500 men, when they destroy 25 arty pieces and 900 men. Considering that it happens about every single time unless one is using ridiculous odds(=900 arty pieces vs. 20 arty pieces), it makes one wonder...
From what I've read, neither side could muster particularly efficient counter-battery fire.

ARTY Retreat Losses

Post by Stefdragon »

Guns take a good deal of time to transport and set up in the best of conditions, let alone to be broken down and moved under fire, or at least during the strain on men, material, and logistics that a retreat would cause.

Higher attrition on guns in a retreat of even one hex makes sense to me. "When you gotta go, you gotta go!" (potty joke!), even if it's one hex.
