Space Station in combat

Post by Vasiliy »

Hi,

How I found a battlestation try to fire at every ship in the fire range simultaneously. Am I right?

If yes then it is very ineffective way, a station must concentrate all fire at one target until disable it.

Is it possible to manage your stations combat behavior?

Thanks

While not the most efficient, probably the most realistic. The game does not have firing arcs, a real station would have restricted arcs and thus could not put all firepower on a single target.

However, if you select the station as the ship you control, you can tell it to engage single targets. So to answer your question, yes it is possible to do fire control for the stations.

that would be too cheap i think.

I always thought fire arcs should be implemented in the game. At lease space stations pseudosimmulate this with ineffective targeting.

it would be impossible for the AI to force land on any defended planet as long as a human would direct effectively direct fire from his Station.

Maybe it doesn't. I've done it, but perhaps the other targets were simply out of range. I always assumed they would operate like any other ship. In truth, usually I have fleet actions going on and don't try to micro-manage my battles.

I don't think you can select targets for a space station - anyone tried it recently? It would be useful to target an approaching troop transport rather than one of its escorting frigates.
While the battles the British fight may differ in the widest possible ways, they invariably have two common characteristics – they are always fought uphill and always at the junction of two or more map sheets.

The firing arcs will be cool, but dont think they will add that ideas. If they did, everything on ships and models will have to be redos. New ship construction with slots will be needed.

I reason it will also make ship battles more tactical. No longer will it be enough to just jump in random formation and open fire in all directions.

though this game seems to be focusing a lot more on strategic aspects and a lost less on tactical battles (especially illustrated by the way my ships ignore my orders during battle and do their own thing half the time). I hope this will change with expansions.

It dont realy made sense to destroy a Spacestation around a planet when you just can invade the planet and warp out with the trooptransports.
The remaining fleet is just to distract the station until the troops are droped.

^   Has this still not been fixed in Legends?  Being able to invade a colony without first destroying/neutralizing its stationary defenses has long been a complaint, and I was really hoping the issue would have been improved/alleviated in the latest expansion.

Why?

A planet is not a castle on a moat.

Because orbital stations ARE like castles on moats, except instead of fifty feet of water it is fifty miles of air, and instead of stone it is super dense alloys. And orbital weaponry would be like archers that could shoot anywhere on the planet through any armor. There would be no feasible way of gaining control of a planet while such stations were in operation.

They aren't like castles at all. What if the troop transports invaded from the opposite side of the planet from where the station was? To deal with the restricted firing arcs caused by the planet alone you would need hundreds of these stations in orbit. The combat in this game isn't meant to be a simulation of what combat involving intersteller or intrasystem distances would actually be like. It's meant to be fun first, and believable a far distant second.

When a land based military launches an attack, they don't neutralize the entire front line, rather than breech it in one spot and exploit the breech, bypassing the heavy defenses of the entire front line and attacking into the rear support areas. You rarely see an attack across the entire line...having to take out all the defenses in DW would be similar to a broad line attack. As it is now, in DW you have more of a breech and exploit type warfare.
