Another Game Suggestion Thread

Post by TundraToad »

Hello

I am wondering if you could steer me in the right direction. I am a old boardgamer that started out with PanzerBiltz and the Rise of Fall of the 3rd Riech. I have just bought Unity of Command and am having a great time with it but already have a itch for something "bigger".

I have looked into WitE and I am worried that it might be too big of a step. Time of Fury looks interesting but I think I will want to wait until it's a little more polished? Is there any game thats in between or a stepping stone to WitE?

Thanks

What board games did you play?  That will give us a general ideal what level of games you would like.[;)]

I have played all different levels of board games from Squad Leader (not advanced) to Europe Engulfed. I also own too many that I will probably never play (Devil's Cauldron, Rommel in the Desert, The Longest Day). I have one friend who is kinda interested in these games but we are starting small, playing Conflict of Heroes at the moment (very rarely and he has looked over my collection and wants to try Combat Commander next) . That is why the computer is nice as the PC is always ready for a game.

I am thinking about a game with a larger scale. I want to play WitE someday and if I can't find a game of medium complexity I will probably pick it up during the sale.

Thanks

If I was you I would give War in the East a try.   Its a excellent game.  Some what complex but a little lower than WitpAe.  Also if your interested in the pacific war I certainly would give Uncommon Valor a try.  I still play that one.  Witp is based on Uncommon Valor.  After you get it down move on to WitpAe-[;)]

Matrix are making a conversion of Conflict of Heroes.

Also Squad Battles series by HPS maybe your thing as you seem to enjoy tactical which until CoH comes out Matrix haven't released much at this scale.

If you enjoyed Squad Leader, you might want to check out Panzer Command Ostfront. It has similar scale. But make sure your computer meets minimum specs.

Thanks

I know you said larger scale but a lot of people compare John Tiller's Campaign Series from here at Matrix with PL and PB. There is even a mod to make the screens look like it. It is hexes and platoon level. Good game at a good price.
Conflict of Heroes "Most games are like checkers or chess and some have dice and cards involved too. This game plays like checkers but you think like chess and the dice and cards can change everything in real time."

I do recommend bot wite and tof.. but wite is a  monster.. start with tof, its fun, expansive.. teh whole war a week at a time and harder than you think..
like you, started with PB and 3rd Reich.. if you want super detailed wite.. or watp AE.. I play AE and wite.. but cannot recommend them for casual hour or two a week play..

Commander: Europe at War Gold is a good alternative if you're looking to scratch the grand strategy itch, particularly with the 2.0 free expansion. PBEM offers a wide variety of challenges and strategies as well if you want to mix things up.

Thanks for all the advice.

Still investigating but leaning towards bigger scale, getting smaller scale with boardgames at the moment.

Don't forget to give Steel Panthers a go for a tactical game.
History began July 4th, 1776. Anything before that was a mistake.
