I bought my wife an iPad2 for Xmas. She was fiddlin' with her kindle one day, when a commercial for the Apple-product aired. She looked over at me with kind of a pitiful grimace, and noted "everyone in the world must have one of those," except for her of course. Anyway, I got the hint.

Evaluation:

It seems like a big, expensive iPhone to me. It's the 32-GB, non-3G version. I suspect that about all that she'll do with the tablet is use it as a reader. In fact, she was downloading magazines yesterday. In terms of its WiFi performance, it appears to work well with WPA2 data encryption. iPad2 is a nifty, little toy, IMO, but you pay through the nose for a dose of "chic" that will evaporate as soon as iPad3 emerges. Thank goodness that she's not into Air Jordans!

The Kindle is a truly excellent device. One can store effectively an entire library on the small device, meaning it's fantastic for traveling, or anyone who just doesn't like to carry a huge book around. Of course, the Kindle will never quite be as good as the feeling of an actual book (some would say), but you can remedy this sensation by getting a leather cover for your Kindle.

Not only does a cover protect the device (since it's about as deep as a pencil, it's not something that you would want to drop or damage) but it also provides a nicer feeling to your fingers as you read it. While the Kindle is beautifully light (lighter then many paperbacks) a case will add a little weight to it, and this will influence your case buying decisions. Pick something that you really want your case to focus on. There are probably a lot of reasons why you would like a case, but say the main reason that you want a light which can illuminate your Kindle when reading it in less then great lighting conditions.

There are various different devices over at Amazon that can help with this. There are clip on lights like those little book reading light clips that you can buy for a couple of dollars. I have a Nook color and enjoy it very much. I use it for (mostly) e-reading for which it works well. It also has wi-fi functionality and can hook up to my Netflix streaming account. If you're into those things, it also has a number of touch sensitive aps (e.g., Angry Birds) that make for good "emergency" child entertainment from time to time. The Nook color is excellent for color magazines and newspapers too. As a reader, per se, it's not of the quality of the Kindle, but it's a poor man's Kindle Fire or iPAD generalist.

My wife has a Kindle DX (the large screen) and she loves it. Better battery life, an EXCELLENT reader screen for B/W books and a superb online library to choose from. Color display-by definition-is nil and there are limited Wi-fi options, none of which can be used for online streaming. No game or other interactive aps worthy of the name.

My summary: Different tools for different functions. Apples to oranges. Both suit their own mission profile.

I keep hoping that someone will come out with an e-ink color version in a large screen 8x11.

I love Barnes&Noble, but I have an Ipad so I downloaded the BN app and can buy right from their store via ereader of course. I also like Amazon, so I also have the Kindle app. I get the both of best worlds. I also have GoodReader, which lets me view my many game manuals.
