Area LOS tool question

Command Ops: Battles From The Bulge takes the highly acclaimed Airborne Assault engine back to the West Front for the crucial engagements during the Ardennes Offensive. Test your command skills in the fiery crucible of Airborne Assault’s “pausable continuous time” uber-realistic game engine. It's up to you to develop the strategy, issue the orders, set the pace, and try to win the laurels of victory in the cold, shadowy Ardennes.
Command Ops: Highway to the Reich brings us to the setting of one of the most epic and controversial battles of World War II: Operation Market-Garden, covering every major engagement along Hell’s Highway, from the surprise capture of Joe’s Bridge by the Irish Guards a week before the offensive to the final battles on “The Island” south of Arnhem.

Area LOS tool question

Post by RockinHarry »

Need some clarification here. While using the Area LOS tool I noticed that Area LOS from within forests is somewhat different, than from using it outside forests. In the screenshots you see that LOS goes generically 200m good vis and additional drop off into the 300m range from chosen spot. You also see an area of a bare hill to the south west.

If selecting a spot on this bare hill (yellow arrow) with area LOS and check back LOS to original spot in the woods, than there is none.

Layer data for pine woods (on Losheim gap map) is 50% visibility reduction per 100m. So basically that means you can barely see beyond the first 100m INTO the forest from the outside and the area LOS tool gives a proper presentation of it. But if you check area LOS from within forests, it rather seems that line of sight reduction per 100m is rather in the ~30% range.[&:]

Whoever said that LOS is reciprocal? - because in reality it is not. Nearby vegetation may not block your line of sight to a distant object bnut often can block someone's LOS from a distance. That's just the way it works. You can prove this yourself. Go and locate yourelf on a barew hoill and look into a distant area of covered tewrrain. All you see is the blur of the vegetatioin. Now go to that same vegetation area and look up to the hill. I bet you will see it.

Yep, I´m fine with the explanation of non reciprocal LOS situations and fully agree. Just was a bit wondering about the almost generic 200-250m LOS WITHIN forests, with regard to the standard 50% LOS reduction setting in the map editor. A 100% setting still yields about 200m allaround view within forests. So shouldn´t LOS be capped at beyond 100m then?[&:]

IIRC (I'm supposed to be on leave so I'm not going to open up the dev environment to check ) that for the LOS tool we work on a guaranteed LOS range of 150m from the edge of a standard unit radius of 75m, so hence a 225m from the centre of the selected grid.

Thanks, Dave! That is very useful info, helping to understand what I see. So enjoy your time off! [:)]
