detailed battle problems

I am not able to fight detailed battles when using the intermediate and advanced versions of Forge of Freedom. In the game I just completed ( and lost by fall, 1863) I chose the CSA and the computer had the US. Before the game I 'x'ed the detailed battles box and then fought the entire war without the opportunity to use the detailed battle (hex grid system) option even once. Can anyone help me?

Is this reproducible?  Would you mind posting a screenshot of your options screen?
