German army question

Post by paulolkowski »

I watched the 1993 movie "Stalingrad" again and I noticed some soldiers were wearing a silver breastplate type medal around their neck. Its on a chain.
Does anyone know what this is? Thanks

They're called 'gorgets'; originally pieces of armor intended to protect the throat area that had long ceased to serve that function by WW2. I think they were more uniform 'accessory' than awards for valor or good conduct (maybe rank related?).

EDIT: Yup; those articles cover it nicely.

Yeah, I always thought it was the MPs.

Yup. Gorgets were worn by the Feldgendarmerie (MPs).

Stalingrad isn't a bad film. A couple of clips.

Storming the factory

Fighting T-34s

The tanks in the second clip are T-34s, but I'm not sure whether they are all of the correct type for late '42/ early '43.

Yes, they are the 'dog collars' worn by the Feldgendamerie, the German MP's. Translucent in the dark as well!
