Lae on the southeastern coast of New Guinea, was captured today by the Sasebo 1st SNLF. There was no opposition, as Roger has evacuated the Australian unit. Base and engineer units will begin to land tomorrow, and build a major base here.

Roger kept up his aggressive history with his naval forces, with a sweep by two light cruisers of the Royal Navy on my Kuching landings overnight. But the luck was with me this time, as his light cruisers ran strait into my cruiser covering force.

Also the British base at Kuching was secured by the my troops that landed there yesterday, and there was no opposition as Roger has evacuated all his troops from here. The plan is to initially use the airfield at Kuching as a fighter airfield to protect the Port and support other landings in this area. But the airfield will ultimately be built-up to a bomber base for JAAF use, for support of future operations in the Sumatra and Java areas.

Eastern Pacific.

A small naval guard unit landed, and occupied the atoll of Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands today. The plan is to reinforce this unit with a naval construction battalion, and a JNAF airfield unit. Tarawa is to be built up to a forward base for naval air-search and reconnaissance aircraft.

Celebes.

Two naval infantry battalions landed at Manado in the eastern Celebes today, and will attack and secure this base from it’s Dutch defenders tomorrow.

Luzon.

The big news today was the successful assault on the main American air base at Clark Field today. Which caused very heavy casualties to the enemy, and forced him to retreat to the Bataan Peninsular. The plan now is for the 16th division which has just arrived at Manila, to take the City after a short bombardment. Then to simply besiege and air-bombard the remaining enemy forces at Bataan, until they starve.

New Guinea.

A SNLF company landed at Biak in Dutch New Guinea today, and will finish securing this base tomorrow. The future plan is for the Army to take over Baik, and develop it into a Support airfield for their forward bases to the south and west.


Celebes.

Manado in the Celebes Islands was captured today, after an assault on this base by a naval landing force. The two Dutch units holding Manado were completely wiped-out, as Sidate to the south had been captured on the previous day. Therefore blocking the defending Dutch units retreat into the jungle to the south.

This now opens the line of advance up on the Dutch bases to the south, as I will quickly build-up Manado as a JNAF torpedo capable two-engine bomber base. Which will allow me naval and air domination of the areas around Ambon, and Kendari.

I had the JNAF raid the American troop positions around Cagayan again today, and this will continue until the extra infantry regiment lands in about three days. It is a bit disappointing that Roger was able to build-up Cagayan, and hold it against my initial assault. As the infantry regiment reinforcing here was earmarked for the Ambon operation, and this has now put back that operation, as another infantry regiment lifts from Korea.

My forces took Port Swettenham today, and destroyed the last remnants of the Indian brigade there. A small independent naval infantry company landed on the Shortlands in the Solomon's Islands today, and will secure the small port tomorrow. Shortlands will be built-up to a major airfield to support the planned expansion into the Southern Solomon's.

On the ground I cleaned up the last of Roger’s blocking forces, that he had put across my line of communications with Kuala Lumpur. The big news here today, was that my troops quietly occupied Rangoon. This was a bit of an anticlimax as Roger had pulled his troops out a few days before. The plan is to build-up my air-power and supply in Rangoon, which will take about two weeks. Then I will start probing north toward both Akyab and Mandalay.


Andaman Islands.

I put a offensive sweep of A6M2 Zeros operating from the JNAF field at Prachuap Khiri Khan over Port Blair today. This is the start of my operation to win air-superiority over Port Blair, and ultimately isolate this base. As my latest air-reconnaissance is showing he now has twenty-four ground units based at Port Blair. Leaving an Allied base of this strength in the Andaman’s would be of some concern to me, as it would threaten my communications between Thailand and Burma.

There was only action in the air, over the area of the Malaysian Peninsula. With a JAAF medium bomber raid launched from Alor Star, on the Dutch airfield at Sabang in Northern Sumatra. The purpose of this raid was to suppress the enemy fighter aircraft operating from there. The JNAF also send-out an anti-shipping strike from George Town, on British shipping off Medan.

South Seas.

I have been suspecting that Roger had a surface action task force operating in between Truk, and the Solomon Islands. There had been a positive sighting two days ago by a H6K4 Mavis operating from Truk, of a small unidentified naval force to the southwest, about 300 miles out. But because of bad weather no strike was lauched then, and again because of heavy weather no sighting was made yesterday.

Then this morning in clear weather this enemy force materialized, and intercepted a small transport convoy carrying a naval construction battalion of 1500 men about 200 miles southeast of Truk. This American naval force, which contained a heavy cruiser and two destroyers. Completely overwhelmed the small convoy of 2 escorting patrol ships and 2 troop carrying freighters, sinking all 4 vessels.

But then later in the day a H6K4 air-search Mavis from Truk, sighted and identified the Allied surface force still in the area of the convoy attack. Both morning and afternoon air-strikes by JNAF medium torpedo bombers were able to be launched against this force from Truk. Resulting in the sinking of the American heavy cruiser, but the 2 destroyers were able to escape because of there speed and manoeuvrability.

The JAAF launched another heavy bombing raid on the RAF air station on Singapore, by medium bombers and fighters flying from Alor Star. This raid was not opposed by any Allied fighters, and all my aircraft returned to base.

Then in the afternoon JNAF dive-bombers operating from George Town sortied against a small Allied convoy off Sabang in Northern Sumatra. This strike was intercepted by Dutch fighters, and even though the JNAF dive-bombers had lost their own fighter escort, they suffered no losses.

Action last night in the waters around Truk, when the 2 American destroyers that had survived air-attack yesterday struck at Truk Lagoon. But because of a lull in operations in this area, until the build-up for the Port Moresby operation begins. There was only one naval force at Truk, and that was the South Seas cruiser force.

Luzon.

The 65th brigade attempted to take American naval base at Subic Bay today, but were repulsed by the Marine defenders. The situation in Malaya at present.

January 17, 42.

Peleliu Islands.

A minor disaster off my major base of Babeldaob last night, when Roger launched another one of his naval hit and run raids. His force of one ANZAC light cruiser and two American destroyers, attack a Port Arthur fuel convoy unloading at Babeldaob.

This was a special fuel convoy made-up of four large strategic tankers escorted by two old destroyers, and was making an extra fuel delivery to Babeldaob. This extra delivery was on top of the normal regular fuel convoy of medium tankers, and was of the heavy fuel usage by the extra heavy fleet units operating from the Peleliu’s.

All four of my large tankers were sunk in this night engagement, even though the two old escorting destroyer’s put up an inspiring defence. I am sure that my destroyers manage to badly damage one of the attacking American destroyers. That this destroyer may have sunk the next day, but the other enemy units escape, even though being attacked twice by G3M2 Nell’s from Babeldaob.
