Amazed with the AAR Activity
Lately I have been simply amazed with the amount of AAR activity in this forum. Presuming that AARs represent a very tiny fraction of games ongoing this is an indication that AE has again taken off like a rocket. I credit the fantastic interface and ease of play improvements that MichaelM has made in the Beta patches for the surge in enthusiasm.

Noticed as well. No wonder with all the improvements.
AE came a long way from where it started.

The interface improvements are great. Pilot training is no longer the mother of all chores. [&o]

RE: Amazed with the AAR Activity
The game is spectacular. The forum community is spectacular.
Some of the old salts were kind of growing jaded - a natural byproduct of "familiarity breeds contempt" when you've been around too much and too long. But fresh faces keep arriving daily, so that the game is refreshed and renewed. It's incumbent on us old timers to not be jaded by the newbie questions. Yes, we've been through it before, but we can either step aside to let others chime in, or we can take a breath, rejuvinate the senses, and mentor.
Some of the best entertainment around has come from newbs in the past year. What an amazing game!
Truly, I expect to be playing this game a decade from now (by then I should be in my sixth or seventh match) unless a WitPAE II comes along in the meantime. If it doesn't, I can easily accept the current game as long as the forum members are still around to provide competition and entertainment.

Good thoughts here.... I can't imagine a time in my life where another game knocks this off its perch as my favorite game. I'll echo it may be when WITP II comes out or something along those lines.

RE: Amazed with the AAR Activity
This is the only game I have played solid from the day I bought it... I bounce back and forth between a couple of others, but this is rock solid.
I have noticed a big increase in activity as well.
Pretty cool to be a part of all of it.

But who will you be playing against??? Within 10 years will we have had our rematch? Hmmm...
You are correct. The new players have really added to the mix quite nicely.

Sounds great. Those of you who have updated ongoing games with the Betas, have you found any odd issues when doing so? I want to suggest it to Herb but fear cocking up our game

We update to the most recent beta every chance we get, and haven't had any problems yet.

In my first PBEM game we started in Sept with the Beta current then and updated after a month or so. It improved the game immensely as some of the pilot keys were added around that time. I'm sure it would be slightly different and potentially more of a shock if you are not using one of the betas at all.
Some games, like the GJ - Rader game, have updated many times and seem to be doing fine, with an occasional issue that is then brought to the Tech forum and MichaelM for tweaking. Honestly though, it'll save an enormous amount of time and energy even if there are a few kinks to work out. Imagine 3 clicks to empty your pilot traning squads!
I have noticed an increase in the year and a half I have been on the forum. I used to see AARs sit on page one for a few days, but now that I've been writing one I notice if I don't post for a day I might find it again on page two. I wish I could read more of them!

RE: Amazed with the AAR Activity
I like the new betas have not had a problem out of them in my PBEM. Maybe with the uptake in the forum this will push for a new AE 2.
RE: Amazed with the AAR Activity
Ive downloaded the lastest Beta and it is an exe. I guess it installs the patch on its own and differently to the official patches?I have a DBB game going with an earlier Beta and I prefer all the interface changes. So can someone post the Idiots Guide for updating to a Beta Patch?
Thanks

Thats the idiot´s guide we were using when upgrading to current beta, except the version numbers nothing changes:
Have fun!

For those of you running PBEM games, here is a recommended update procedure*:
(Note: v1079 refers to the game Release version and v1084 refers to the Update version. Your current version may vary.)
1) Japanese player resolves latest turn using current version v1079.
2) Japanese player saves game.
3) Japanese player exits game.
4) Japanese player sends combat replay to Allied player.
5) Japanese player upgrades to new version v1084.
6) Japanese player issues orders and advances turn.
7) Japanese player sends turn to Allied player.
8) Allied player plays combat replay under old version v1079.
9) Allied player upgrades to new version v1084.
10) Allied player issues orders and advances turn.
11) Allied player send turn file back to Japanese player.
The key is that orders must be entered using the same version and then the turn resolved with that version i.e.:
-J Orders v1079, A Orders v1079, J Resolve v1079, A Replay v1079;
-Both update to v1084, J Orders v1084, A Orders v1084, etc.
For Japanese players playing multiple PBEM games, what this means is that you will need to collect all of your opponents' turns and run them before updating.
After you run each turn, send off the replay file to the Allied player, and ask him to play the replay under the old version. Once you have resolved all of your PBEM opponents' turns, you can now upgrade.

Have fun!

I have used every beta. An occasional glitch which Michael has usually fixed right away. No problems at all and I could never even imagine going back to even the last official patch. By all means, go beta..

Thanks for the replies.
When I run the Beta exe it asks for a location to install. I assume that is the Witp:AE game folder?
