Oh, yes. You definitely see it from the Allied side. It's been made a little worse by my choice of return-routes to the US West Coast of all the merchants spread out all over the map at game start. Some have made the West Coast but a bunch more are still on the way.

Continued recon of Pearl Harbor and San Francisco by float planes. The landings on Java and Sumatra continue. In China the Empire looks serious about cutting of Kukong with its thrust to the north, south of Hengyang. Otherwise it was a day when the beatings from the air continued. The B-17 raid on Port Moresby did go well, with damage done plus a Zero destroyed on the ground, and no B-17 losses. No sign of KB.

There was this: "PG Charleston collides with TK Pat Doheny at 157 , 175 ". Pat Doheny shrugged it off with 2-5-1-0, but Charleston is in tough shape at 2-54(44)-13(6)-0. They are in the middle of pretty much nowhere when it comes to naval repair facilities. Charleston is breaking off with a DMS to find a port to pump out and make temporary repairs. After that, maybe Auckland. I hope the crew gets experience for that.

I presume those are reserve divisions of some sort, otherwise their AV tally would be about double what's there. Imperial forces are moving north from Nanyang on the road to Sian. The Imperial Guards Division is moving to Moulmein by ship, so before long the Burma road will close on China. The Empire has begun its offensive on western Java. The survivors of Buitenzorg will make their way to Bandoeng as best they can. The main forces were well out of Batavia to avoid encirclement, which is why Batavia fell today. There were numerous sub attacks and ASW attacks, but only Spearfish scored and that on a PB in self defense. Tabor paid the price of repeatedly sallying into Wake Island's anchorage and is sunk. The bright spot for the Allies today were the Dutch float planes making numerous attacks near Merak and near Semarang. The consolidated results.

No word of any Imperial carriers. The Imperial swarm just keeps coming on Java. The new landing at Djokjakarta, and the last Dutch forces running for Bandoeng from the west (the former counter attack force) were smote and pushed along. The big surprise was in China near Hengyang. I expected the next IJA attack to be a rout of the defenders but instead they held. Alas they are now in tough shape and more Imperial troops are marching, but it was a good day!

They are certainly noticed now! The Imperial horde in Manila is now cut off from supply. The Allied armored units will now move into Manila to gain that hex side for the Allies and tighten the knot just that much. Correspondingly, Imperial units are seen moving from Manila toward Cabanatuan. Precious artillery ammunition in Manila will be used to slow them down.

There is no sign at all of any Imperial carriers. At this point they could be sallied forth on raiding expeditions, gathering with other forces for a major amphibious adventure, refitting, or obviously come combination of those. The world wonders.

At the rate PG Charleston is pumping out temporary flooding at Aitutaki she will be underway for Auckland in about 5 days. A large aircraft convoy is underway for Australia, as is a large troop convoy. A supply convoy is loading for New Zealand. Here is an overview map.

The small Filipino Scout unit that advanced on Lingayen to cover the flank of the Cabanatuan operation was beaten severely and retreated to Clark Field. The two armored units from Cabanatuan just barely failed to make Manila in one day. Unfortunately, some IJA units did make it from Manila to Cabanatuan in one day. The units at Cabanatuan will sprint back to Clark Field.

Pearl Harbor is still under more or less constant recon. It appears the Glen equipped sub that was operating off of San Francisco has moved south to the sea lanes serving San Diego and Los Angeles. Today they spotted an ASW group but missed the large troop convoy.

The Chinese force near Hengyang was finally retreated. While the results were bad, they could have been a lot worse. Two of the units will remain at Hengyang to rebuild (for now at least) while one retreated plus the two that withdrew will move to the rear for rebuilding.

Alas the temporary victories were both taken back. In particular, Imperial air power was pulled back to tactical support on Luzon and absolutely devastated the US armored columns at Cabanatuan. After the aerial carnage, the four IJA armored units that had rushed to the scene made a head long shock attack and routed the Allied troops. The final combat report would not paint the picture, because the preceding air attacks were just as bad. There was good news at Bandoeng as the Empire's troops attacked and suffered casualties at a ratio of about 54 to 1 against those they inflicted. An Imperial unit collapsed and was destroyed during the assault but it's unknown which one.

That Glen-sub peaked at San Francisco and so missed all the convoys that moved by it to the south. The evacuation of the lower Burma coast was completed when the last unit strat moved out of Pegu despite very heavy aerial attacks. The Burma road will close when Rangoon is occupied, but Pegu must go first. Still nothing on the Imperial carriers. Here is a look at Luzon, where the last counter attack petered out.

The Burma Road is closed. Sources report that an Imperial DD was blasted by a mine at Soerabaja. Today also saw an air raid on Shwebo, evidence that SVC has been ordered by the Emperor to halt the orderly withdrawal of Allied forces in Burma to prevent them from forming a tenable defensive line. Maddeningly, Imperial battleships have moved into Soerabaja harbor as if it is their own. As they did so numerous Dutch combat aircraft made attacks but all missed. Still no Intel on carriers. Horn Island was left unconquered when the Empire seized Port Moresby and Milne Bay.

Dutch forces set up at Medan for the main defensive line on Sumatra, hoping to hold and damage the oil facilities as much as possible in the fighting. The IJA 41st Inf Rgt would have none of it but did have an easy time owing to the constant devastating air attacks on those Dutch forces over the past couple of weeks. The seizure of Pegu revealed 4 x RTA divisions plus the IJA 33rd Division.

The intrepid RN SS Truant has been repeatedly entering the waters of Moulmein. She finally scored on AK Tosan Maru with one torpedo. Fires were seen, but the target is right at the port so possibly she will survive? During this time of expansion for the Empire it's good to take a full AK out of action. Combats today were a continuation of the crunch from the air and the crunch on Java. The withdrawal from the Burma Plain continues with only air harassment as Imperial forces have not yet neared Toungoo. The fast convoy with aircraft for Australia has completed swapping APD for DD and is now moving along at 24kn. It will rendezvous with another oiler in a few days to top up. The other fast convoy will rendezvous tomorrow with other TFs to take on fuel, swap APDs for DDs, and to take 2 x CA on as heavy escort. Here is an overview map.

The reduction of Java continues along with that of the rest of the DEI. Between Kukong and Hengyang, in the rough hex 92mi from each of them is the Chinese army which is digging in. IJA units have moved into the hex from both the Kukong side of the road and the Hengyang side of the road (which they gained from the earlier battles west of Pingsiang). The stacking limit of the hex is 70,000. The Chinese army has ~65,000 there in 14 different units, 8 infantry and 6 HQ. The IJA have 26 units there and given the mass of the formations those units came from simply must be over stacked to a degree that imposes supply penalties. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Even holding on for a few turns might be a victory for the Allied forces.

The Chinese Army defending near Hengyang is in trouble. The attack by the Imperial forces today came off at 1 to 2 with somewhat greater casualties for the Chinese. Air attacks through the day were simply murderous and definitely had a significant impact on the combat. The terrain was chosen so that the entire army could be held without supply penalty and is Rough, which is x2 for defense. Forest probably offers better protection against air attack.

Another factor is the number of squads of various types that begin disabled for the Chinese. They still count toward stacking. This means that the IJA can field more attacking power per unit of stacking, which I presume is quite realistic. It is still a problem for the Allied player to overcome. In this particular battle, the Allies had just a little over the 70,000 stacking limit, and the combat report showed "57,805" troops in the ground combat, which came after air combat. There were only 4 squads destroyed in air attacks (3 combat and 1 support), so the combat number shows less than the stacking number for the Chinese in that hex. If the same holds true for the IJA units in that hex, then the "73,008" troops shown in the combat report are probably closer to 90,000 stacking. That figure would exact a meaningful penalty in supply. It better, because the Chinese units are almost out of supply whereas they were fine yesterday. Supplies are being flown in by the entire Chinese Air Force, but then again they already were! Disruption is also high for the defenders. We can only hope it is worse for the attackers and that they must rest while the Chinese infantry digs in further as they only had fortifications to level 1.

A deliberate attack by Imperial forces at Manila turned out differently.

They did reduce the fortifications, but attacks in this vein should at least be slowing down the Imperial steam roller. We'll see. No sign of Imperial carriers. A convoy has finished making up at sea and is getting on its way to New Zealand with fuel and supplies. The fast aircraft convoy has made its final at sea refueling and is now making non-stop for Australia (refueling escorts on the way as needed of course). The fast troop convoy for Australia has traded escorts and is now on the way with destroyers and 2 heavy cruisers after also taking on fuel. They will make one more refueling rendezvous in a few days.

A lesser victory was had at Tarakan where a desperate assault commander ordered a shock attack after (how many?) weeks of being denied. Surely SVC will send in additional troops before the Emperor hears of it. At Padang, near Medan, and at San Jose the Allies held while bloodied. Near Soerabaja the Soerabaja KM Base Force remnants are being reduced but defending anyway.

Forces totaling 967 AV are moving now to cross the river and attack the single IJA unit at the road junction just south of Hengyang. The purpose is not to open a route for the defenders further to the south, but rather to punish that IJA unit and create a weakness in the Imperial position. Other forces are being moved to Hengyang to provide defense as needed.

The Empire continues to make progress in the DEI, but elsewhere there are glimmers of hope. Dutch planes continue attacking IJN assets wherever they can. The problem is they are overwhelmed by Imperial fighter opposition. Some attack runs are made but on this day they all failed. Even still the Empire is inspired to bomb both remaining airfields - Bandoeng and Tjilatjap - to stop the menace to its ships. Both airfields are now incapable of launching offensive land-based missions, but Tjilatjap can still send the lumbering flying boats out to fight. Both can put up fighters, the few there are. The real action was on land. Near Hengyang the Imperial horde bombarded without assaulting.
