On Map Boss non-use of reinforcements

Command Ops: Battles From The Bulge takes the highly acclaimed Airborne Assault engine back to the West Front for the crucial engagements during the Ardennes Offensive. Test your command skills in the fiery crucible of Airborne Assault’s “pausable continuous time” uber-realistic game engine. It's up to you to develop the strategy, issue the orders, set the pace, and try to win the laurels of victory in the cold, shadowy Ardennes.
Command Ops: Highway to the Reich brings us to the setting of one of the most epic and controversial battles of World War II: Operation Market-Garden, covering every major engagement along Hell’s Highway, from the surprise capture of Joe’s Bridge by the Irish Guards a week before the offensive to the final battles on “The Island” south of Arnhem.

On Map Boss non-use of reinforcements

Post by Deathtreader »

Hi all,

I just downloaded the HTTR Exp Pack and fired up a scenario at random to make sure everything worked. I issued an order to the on map boss (Corps level) to move with attack option the other end of the map, hit play speed fastest, and sat back to watch the 1st ten hours of the battle unfold. Four sets of reinforcements arrived in the first 5 hours of the battle and even though orders delay at the boss level never exceeded 203 minutes the on map boss NEVER issued any of them any orders during 600 minutes of game time. All reinforcements were still "waiting" at the end.

This also happens in the the 2 Bulge scenarios I did a quick check on. It seems like the boss never realizes that reinforcements are now part of it's force mix and consequently ignores them as they arrive after the the initial order.... if you reissue the order after their arrival (for each arrival) then the boss includes that specific group of reinforcements in it's planning.

So.......maybe my download has screwed something up or I'm talking thru my hat, or this is intentionally part of the design or ???

Somebody try it yourselves please and let me know. Maybe I need to reinstall..........

Thanks!

Deathtreader...reinforcements don't automatically get given orders by a map boss, you have to give them or reattach them to their HQ. I'm happy with the way it is to be honest, as I usually have my own plan for reinforcements, or I just reattach tem when they arrive..I think they will then travel to their boss, though can't be certain of that.

Not always true, Wodin. Mostly what I've seen is that if you just leave them the reattach button, at least, disappears after a while. Not sure if that means they have been given orders, but certainly in BFTB they were given orders after a while without me doing anything at all. I'm playing through From the Meuse to the Rhine at the moment, on slow speed (and loving every minute) - I'll keep an eye out for what happens DT.

When I first noticed this same observation several months ago I reported it on the Dev forum, since I seem to recall that reinforcements would "get the orders" as they came in. Dave explained that it is in fact WAD now in order to give the play er more control over reinforcements as they enter. Otherwise at faster game speeds they would be hard to track once they bolted off.

And that's JUST changed, Richard? Because I do remember only two days ago - playing Piper's Race - that if I left them alone they got used. Or was I imagining that?

Hi,

Thanks for the reponse but what is meant by WAD??

I gather you are saying that this behaviour is an intentional design feature??

Thanks!

Rob.

WAD...Works as designed. Maybe when you give their boss new orders they take them up without having to reattach them...however I'm with Dave as I wouldn't want the reinforcements to necessarily go off to do whatever their boss is doing. especially if it's a whole battalion or more, I probably need them for something else altogether. Smaller unit reinforcements I just click reattach when they arrive if I don't need them.

It all depends on the reassemment done by the on map boss. If the on map boss dpes a complete replan then they will be included in the force mix and allocated to a task. If the bos does a partial replan then they may or may not be included and given orders. This will depend on a range of factors but the intent is to avoid constant replanning and hence no progress by the main body of on map units. If the reinforcements represent a significant percentage of the total force then the probablity is high for them being committed and hence forceing a replan.

So I was right in my hunch that they may join in if their boss gets new orders. That will explain why it's been notice that they sometimes move off without orders being given.
