What's With the Port Numbers (Newby Question)

Post by Canoerebel »

Gents,

I know in general that the larger the port "number," the larger the port. But why are the port numbers sometimes followed by a second number in parenthesis? For instance, you might have Luganville 3(9). I used to think the parenthetical number was the maximum size of the port, but I've exceeded the parenthetical number many times. I haven't found an explanation in the rules (probably nearsightedness on my part). So, what is the significance of the parenthetical number?

Didn't see anything about ports in the FAQ

Post by Canoerebel »

I went to the Matrix Games Forum FAQ and didn't find anything about ports under the Uncommon Valor heading (it was all general stuff about computer compatability, drivers, etc). I may have been looking in the wrong FAQ but I couldn't find any others.

So....can anybody help me (either with a link or other directions to the correct FAQ or by telling me what the parenthetical port number is)?

Thanks.

The number in parenthesis is the "normal" max the object is rated for.

If an AF or port is rated at "0(1)", it is currently at a size 0, and can be "normally" built up to a size 1.

You can build up to 3 past the "normal" max size, but at much greater cost in supplies and time (to the something on the degree of 10x the supplies and time requrired if you were expanding within the "normal" max range). So if a base is rated at 2(3), you currently have a size 2 AF, it's normal max is 3, but if you're willing do put in the time and supplies you can EVENTUALLY build it up to a size 6.

Something with a "normal" max of 0 is just a pile of rock. It takes a LONG time (on the magnitude of 20x the supplies and time required) to build it up to even a 1. So at "Wau" (NW of Port Moresby), it's rated as a 1(0). It's been built up from a 0 to a 1 (at great effort). But again, it's going to take ALOT to push it from a 1 to a 2. You could push it to a 3, but you'll need alot of time and supplies to do so.

Just goofing off at the office before checking out.

Feinder answered your question.

But I wanted to point you to the proper FAQ. Check the main UV forum. At the top is a sticky thread labeled FAQ. This should answer your current question (though Feinder has already done that) and perhaps some others you may have as well.
